The voice of a young Roy Orbison with lyrical content comparable to many of my favorite influences from the Beatles to Ryan Adams.

Biography

Jeff Stephens music has often been described and characterized by his thought provoking lyrics and that unique voice that makes his music honest. His performances have left audiences wowed and moved by the pure emotion that has come to define him. As a co founder, writer and member of the now defunct Orchard Thieves, Stephens honed his skills and versatility as a songwriter, and learned to play in and with a band. Now stepping out on his own, the vision is his, and the songs hit home with lyrics and melodies that endure. The poignancy of his songwriting is evident in the new 5 song demo produced by Russ Desalvo that boasts a timeless, trendless quality that will leave the listener thinking and humming and wanting to play it all over again. Also featured on the EP, legendary musicians Frank Vilardi on percussion, Patrick Carroll on bass and Russ Desalvo on guitars.

Stephens family had roots in Pittsburgh PA where he was born. His family moved to Florida and then up to New York where they settled and where he proudly calls home. While in New York he co founded a band called The Orchard Thieves who gained some notoriety playing in Manhattan in clubs like, Sin-e, The Village Underground, Arlene's Grocery and the famed Bitter End where Dylan first played in Manhattan. At a young age, Stephens was drawn to music, endlessly playing the Beatles "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". That began a voracious appetite for music that has continued to this day. Stephens songs hit you in the gut. They ease in slowly and build to points of exaltation, elation and heartbreak, however, they never lose sight of the road they travel on. The lyrics are woven in a way that on paper they could be Poetry, but as a song matched with beautiful melodies and vocals they soar to a different place, while at the same time, coming from a place that everyone's been to.

Lyrics

Ship To Nowhere

Written By: Jeff Stephens

I’ GOT A LION’S HEART OF WILL
AND MY SONG’S ARE BY MY SIDE
UNTIL I BREATHE MY DYING BREATH
I’M GONNA SING LIKE I’M ALIVE

I GOTTA DREAM I’M CHASING DOWN
SO IF THE OTHERS UP AND QUIT
I’M GONNA SMILE RIGHT IN THERE FACE
THE CAPTAIN GOES DOWN WITH THE SHIP

I WILL RIDE THIS LONELY SHIP TO NOWHERE
EVENTHOUGH I’M ALL ALONE I WILL BE FREE
I WILL RIDE FOREVER IN THE MOMENT
CAUSE THAT’S THE MAN MY DADDY TAUGHT ME
HOW TO BE

TOO MANY TIMES I FEEL TODAY
THAT IF IT’S MOVING WAY TOO SLOW
THAT INSTEAD OF BUCKLING DOWN AND IN
THEY GET UP QUICK AND GO

BUT I WAS TAUGHT A DIFFERENT WAY
I KNOW WE’RE ALL JUST FLESH AND BONE
SOMETIMES THE MEASURE OF A MAN I FEEL
IS THE STRENGTH TO WALK ALONE

I WILL RIDE THIS LONELY SHIP TO NOWHERE
EVENTHOUGH I’M ALL ALONE I WILL BE FREE
I WILL RIDE FOREVER IN THE MOMENT
CAUSE THAT’S THE MAN MY DADDY TAUGHT ME
HOW TO BE

AND NOW IT’S TIME FOR SHOVING OFF
TO A PLACE THAT’S STILL UNKNOWN
AND I’M PACKING UP MY MEMORIES
FOR WHEN I’M FAR FROM HOME

I GOTTA DREAM I’M CHASING DOWN
SO IF THE OTHERS UP AND QUIT
I’M GONNA SMILE RIGHT IN THEIR FACE
THE CAPTAIN GOES DOWN WITH THE SHIP

I WILL RIDE THIS LONELY SHIP TO NOWHERE
EVENTHOUGH I’M ALL ALONE I WILL BE FREE
I WILL RIDE FOREVER IN THE MOMENT
CAUSE THAT’S THE MAN MY DADDY TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE
CAUSE THAT’S THE MAN MY DADDY TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE

Stuck on A Saturday Night

Written By: Jeff Stephens

NOWHERE IN SIGHT JUST SHADOWS AND NIGHT,
A CHEAP NEON SIGN WITH A FLICKERING LIGHT
SAYING VACANT FOR SIN
KNOW WHERE YOU'VE BEEN
IT'S ALL JUST A WINK
AND A LIE

I SAID IT BEFORE YOU COME OUT THE WINNER
AND NOW THAT YOU'VE SETTLED THE SCORE
WELL I WANNA KNOW FROM THE MOUTH OF THE SINNER
NOT FROM THE MOUTH OF A WHORE

I CANT BELIEVE
WHAT I SEE
IS IT YOU THAT WALKED OUT OF MY DOOR
HONEY YOU LIED WHEN YOU DEFY EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING WE'RE WORKING FOR.

BUY ME A DRINK AND I'LL ROCK ME TO SLEEP
RACKING MY BRAIN WHILE YOU MOVE THROUGH THE SHEETS
WHEN YESTERDAY'S EYES SEE TOMORROWS DISGUISE
ITS ALL JUST A WINK AND A LIE

I SAID IT BEFORE YOU COME OUT THE WINNER
AND NOW THAT YOU SETTLED THE SCORE
WELL I WANNA KNOW FROM THE MOUTH OF THE SINNER
NOT FROM THE MOUTH OF A WHORE

I CANT BELIEVE
WHAT I SEE
IS IT YOU THAT WALKED OUT OF MY DOOR
HONEY YOU LIED WHEN YOU DEFY EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING WE'RE WORKING FOR.
I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT I SEE
IS IT YOU THAT WALKED OUT OF MY DOOR,
HONEY GOODBYE ,FEELINGS ASIDE
EVERYTHING, EVERYTHINGS BECOME A BLUR

AND I'M STUCK ON A SATURDAY NIGHT
BETWEEN A HARLEQUIN MOON, AND A STRANGER
NO WAY TO TELL WHICH IS RIGHT
IS IT THE SAFE, OR THE DANGER?

Then Suddenly

Written By: Jeff Stephens

WELL I DREAMT OF YOU A MILLION TIMES
BUT NEVER IN MY FABLE
DID THE MOMENT THEN APOLOGIZE WHILE I WAS THERE AND ABLE
TO MOVE ON TO MOVE ON

AND THE FIRST TIME THAT I SAW YOUR FACE
I SAT AMONG THE CYNICS
SAYING NEVER WOULD IT COME TO BE
YOU NEVER QUITE EXISTED BEFORE
TO ME BEFORE

THEN SUDDENLY WHEN I WAS BLIND
NOW I SEE THE SUBTLE GRACE OF TIME
THEY CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY
ALL THE MOMENTS THAT WE MAKE RIGHT NOW
RIGHT NOW

THERE WAS NEVER A BEFORE YOU
AND THERE’LL NEVER BE AN AFTER
YOU'RE A VISION IN THE WILDERNESS TOGETHER WE'LL GO FASTER
MOVING ON, MOVING ON...

THEN SUDDENLY WHEN I WAS BLIND
NOW I SEE
THE SUBTLE GRACE OF TIME
THEY CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY
ALL THE MOMENTS THAT WE MAKE
RIGHT NOW

THEN SUDDENLY WHEN I WAS BLIND
NOW I SEE
THE SUBTLE GRACE OF TIME
THEY CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY
ALL THE MOMENTS THAT WE MAKE
RIGHT NOW

AND IT’S ALL SO SUDDEN
AND IT’S ALL SO SUDDEN
