Ghost Story

Written By: Jeff Stillman

Full moon tonight
Trees bent like hunchbacks with broken spines
Leaves scuff along the gravel path that winds
Mist rises off the lake
Like the breath of something sleeping in the deep, far beneath
A dog howls out of sight
A flock of birds erupts in frights
The sort of chilling eerie night
For a ghost story

A girl appears
I swear I didn’t see where she came from
She startled me, my fingers going quickly numb
She looks right through me
She passes me, no color in her face, at a restless pace
Her white dress flutters and it flows
Reaches down below her toes
She floats the way they always float
In a ghost story

This was my Ann
I was her man
Ooh... but never again
But love will survive
Though one lover dies
She comes to meet me when she can
I can still feel her
She can still feel me
It’s love that spans the distance
It’s love that keeps us close
It’s love that spans the distance
Between the living and a ghost

She leads me on
She kneels down beside a mound of earth
There’s a headstone mounted crooked in the dirt
I move to see it
Who is it? The one who’s dead and gone... who’s moved along
The words are etched in two straight lines
The name that’s written there is mine
The kind of twist you sometimes find
In a ghost story

This was my Ann
I was her man
Ooh... but never again
But love will survive
Though one lover dies
She comes to meet me when she can
I can still feel her
She can still feel me
It’s love that spans the distance
It’s love that keeps us close
It’s love that spans the distance
Between the living and a ghost

What Do You See?

Written By: Jeff Stillman

I'm a white man, a Braves fan, a Baptist since age three
A West Texan, a Gen X'er, and an Exxon employee
I'm a college grad, a Democrat, and a decorated ex-Marine
But baby, what do you see?
What do you see
When you look at me?

Am I your pretty face, your steady date, your shoulder when you weep?
Am I a quick fling, a sure thing, your ride on easy street?
Am I your handyman, a ten night stand, or a knight on a pure white steed?
Baby, what do you see?
What do you see
When you look at me?

Am I strong enough?
Or wise enough?
Am I good enough from you to love?

Close your eyes, visualize all your future dreams
There's some guy by your side in those far off scenes
That's the man, yeah that's the man I really need to be
So tell me, what do you see?
What do you see
When you look at me?

Oh, what do you see?
What do you see
When you look at me?

When Simon Says

Written By: Jeff Stillman

She knows the backside of his hand and his belt
She knows the whipcrack of his voice all too well
Three years ago she took his name
And each day since she's played the game
It's a game of self-defense -- she knows the rules
Like a game of Simon Says -- twisted and cruel

When Simon says come... she comes
When Simon says run... she runs
When Simon says wait... she waits
When Simon says stay... she stays
It's a lesson she remembers with every dirty bruise
If you don't do what Simon says
You lose

She never thought he'd change the way that he did
She saw his tender loving hands turn to fists
He made her weak, he made her small
He made her think it's all her fault
But today she found a well down deep inside
Found a strength inside herself she thought had died

When Simon says come... she comes
When Simon says run... she runs
When Simon says wait... she waits
When Simon says stay... she stays
Whatever Simon tells her, she doesn't dare refuse
If you don't do what Simon says
You lose

She's lost too much pride
Ooh... had enough of the fear and the tears she cried
The rules are gonna change and change tonight
It's been too long and it's time

When Simon says come... she'll rise
When Simon says run... she'll fly
When Simon says wait... she won't
When Simon says stay... she'll go
It's Simon's final lesson -- she's learned that she can choose
She won't do what Simon says
Sorry Simon -- you lose

Oh...
