Jen Calder

BandFolkSinger/Songwriter

solo female folk singer, telling stories and fingerpicking rhythms with an ever changing band of instruments

Biography

Toronto singer/songwriter Jen Calder has been writing and performing music for over 10 years. Influenced by legendary folk artists like Paul Simon as well as music from all over the world, Jen began learning guitar when she was in her teens, performing in local coffee shops and venues. Since that time, she has lent her talent to numerous independant theatre productions through Glendon College, Toronto and founded a performance group, 'kitsch/n/sync', a collective of artists uniting to perform together and raise money for orphans in Africa with AIDS. She continues to flex her creative muscle by learning new instruments, working extensively in art and music therapy and recording her debut album.

Lyrics

cures or miracles

Written By: Jen Calder

it's been a long day
it's been a long week
it's been a long time coming
but somehow all this
looks familiar
i swear I've been here before

we ignored the travel wisdom
thought instead we'd blaze a trail
now we find ourselves
reading the signs, thinking
we packed too light

so I wave the white flag
I claim my innocence
but to you they sound the same
I don't want
no cures or miracles
I just want to go home

we bear our arms
raised behind our backs
the silence versus the volume
the heart versus the mind

throwing words out to plug the holes
keep the ship from sinking down
all those words that
brought me comfort
will drown me tonight

so I wave the white flag
I claim my innocence
but to you they sound the same
I don't want
no cures or miracles
I'm just saying....that...

so I wave the white flag
I claim my innocence
right or wrong, loud and clear
I don't want
no cures or miracles

I do not want to be cured
I do not want to get over you

Plan B

Written By: Jen Calder

the sun now creeps up
the birds they beckon us awake
within the canvas walls
that house our sleep
and I wish I wasn't only dreaming
of you last night

I roll towards the doorway
better view of your back
rising with a breath
i think your beauty is so obvious
I can' t believe you haven't seen it yet
I wonder what I'm doing right though
that you feel safe
beside me

Maybe it's time we come clean
fall out of habit
try plan B
show you what's in my hand
believe me there must be magic
in these trees
cause it's working on me
you're working on me

over your shoulder I can see
I can see the edges of the world
rocks reaching out their heavy limbs
towards the dawn
and we are so close and so quiet
but my heart's a thunder storm

Maybe it's time we come clean
fall out of habit
try plan B
show you what's in my hand
believe me there must be magic
in these trees
cause it's working on me
you're working on me

come near, sit here
the flames shout triumph to the night
and the glow around us
carves circles in your cheeks
I'm wondering if you are wondering
about me too..if maybe it's time

Maybe it's time we come clean
fall out of habit
try plan B
just tell eachother everything but
believe me there must be magic
in these trees
cause it's working on me
you're working on me

Of Forgotten Things

Written By: Jen Calder

there are no changes on your face
they are too subtle for me
but i will never see you differently
than I do now

the rivers have ebbed and scarred the edge
now we will swim with ghosts instead
I can see that you still wear
your weapons well

if I could be more impartial
maybe then this could be a discussion

let's not play games with
words and chains
let's not weigh ourselves down
i am unwelcome here
I know but I still came
the arid lines that you define by
what we never hope to find
i can see that you still wear
your heart so well

if i could be more impartial
maybe then i could make this all up to you
if you could be more impartial
maybe then you'd remember
you loved me

the rivers have ebbed and scarred the edge
now we will swim with dust instead
i can see that you still wear
your heart so well

3rd Rail

Written By: Jen Calder

with every groan I am navigating turns
I am entering the city from below
and every image here evokes you
everything evokes you
I associate you with concrete and dark

when I'm lost when I'm sure
that I've lost you
when you slip back into the frame
when I dream
that you are chasing me
with a knife behind your back

there's a comfort in routine
in the darkness of this train
the motion forward
that always leads me back to you
in the 24 hours since you
left my door
the sensation of your fingers
the way your silence roars

your pulse is electric
as it snaps through my connections
as another busy station flashes by
the welcome distraction
delays reaction
I swear I see you
on the plateform

there's a comfort in routine
in the silence of this train
the motion forward
that always leads me back to you
in the 24 hours since you
left my door
the sensation of your fingers
the way your silence roars

I don't know why I'm so surprised
I don't know why I'm so surprised that my hands are
so lonely
if those could be my hands
leaving red fingerprints
on the moon
if I could be simply near you
there'd be no need for dreams

there's a comfort in routine
in the darkness of this train
the motion forward
that never takes me anywhere
of compromises
and hesistations
and all the words we should have said
flying past the train
