Bio

A powerful combination of acoustic pop, soulful piano-driven ballads, and innovative production choices, Jennifer Newman’s music is a breathe of fresh air in the world of female singer-songwriters. Her debut album showcases innate musical talent and touching, evocative subject matter. In addition to writing, performing, and engineering credits, the album marks Jennifer’s debut as record producer. Tracks range from radio friendly pop to orchestral, inventive folk to intimate, acoustic ballads. This release marks Jennifer’s entrance in the music industry. It is clear as both artist and producer, she has a long and fruitful career ahead.

Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Jennifer Newman’s childhood was filled with music. Her father was a singer/songwriter during his youth and her mother was brought up surrounded by the entertainment business. Jennifer’s grandfather, Lionel Newman, was an academy award winning composer and also the vice-president of the music department of 20th Century Fox Studios for forty-six years. Jennifer continues the musical Newman tradition started by her grandfather along with other Newmans including Alfred, Randy, Thomas, David, Maria, and Joey.

At a young age, Jennifer had discovered her love of singing and acting through her performances in musicals and play. Her classical training began at the age of 9 with the piano and continued through classical voice training when Jennifer entered high school. She was the first person at her high school to complete the Intensive Music Track.

Jennifer also gained professional experience working in the music industry. She interned in the TV music department at 20th Century Fox and did voiceover singing for the film Children on their Birthdays. At the same time, Jennifer began teaching herself the guitar and learning music theory. Her powerful voice, enhanced by her capacity to communicate raw emotion at such a young age, was showcased through countless school and local musicals.

Jennifer’s experience in performance provided a foundation of knowledge regarding popular song standards. When she began to study jazz history at the University of Arizona, she found the genre familiar and freeing. Inspired, Jennifer continued her studied there through classes teaching jazz arrangement and performance. During the program, she began to sing her own arrangements at local venues in Tucson. In June 2003, she sang songs with local bands at after-hours venues in Aspen, Colorado following their annual jazz festival.

After attending Playwrights Horizons Theater School through Tisch School of the Arts at NYU for a year, Jennifer had the opportunity to pursue her strongest passion in music. She applied and was accepted into the newly established Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at NYU despite the competitive admissions process. She began her training to become an executive in the music industry in the fall of 2003.

Though the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music, Jennifer developed her skills as a producer, engineer, artist, and businesswoman. She supported her studies through a variety of work experience ranging from a hiphop recording studio to an independent record label to an online music marketing company. Jennifer’s Capstone Project is the culmination of her work at NYU: a complete album written, produced, and performed by Jennifer.
