Biography

Think they just don’t write ‘em like that anymore? Jennifer Scott does.

On the run in the West Texas badlands, sipping liquor in a 1930’s Chicago jazz club, escaping from a Louisiana swamp, or just eating bad chicken, Jennifer Scott’s songs transport the listener to places strange, sublime, sometimes scary and often humorous. A natural storyteller and musician, Jennifer draws from musical influences spanning the 20th century to create distinct songs based on true experiences. With a three-piece backing band, the music is broadly rock and includes blues, god-rock, old-style jazz, cabaret and ragtime. A California native currently living in Sebastopol, Jennifer has played music all her life and is currently producing her second all-original cd.

That Man I Love

Written By: Jennifer Lynn Scott

As a child, he liked to burn things
As a man, nothing’s changed
He still does, that man I love

Throw him in water and hope he don't drown
A childhood designed to turn those gifts upside down
Constructing the person who lives out in front of the man

It would take a good friend or relation to tell you when there's not enough
The tempering process can never be out of control

Live and learn, come up the hard way
MVP's and PhD's, a cut above, that man I love

Arrogant, charming, sarcastic and smart
He's got enough pain to break anyone's heart
He'll win every battle but wonder why he lost the war

It would take a good friend or relation to tell you when you've got enough
Temperatures rise 'til it's so hot it's ready to blow

Now you're paid to walk the bad streets
For some rich guys downtown
He stirs things up, that man I love

He's down with the sinners and up with the saints
I don't know what is right but I know what ain't
A restless heart wanders 'til it finds a place to call home

Late at night and in a bad way
Never needs a living soul
He's so tough, that man I love

A scythe or a gavel, a gun or a smile
It all comes out deadly and very worthwhile
Don't ever worry; Shane ain't got nothing on you

It would take a good friend or relation to tell you when you've had enough
Tempers can flare like a fire burning out of control

Living Like Kings

Written By: Jennifer Lynn Scott

Satin shoes, silken robes, rings of solid gold
Lavish food, finest wine, furs against the cold
Private coach, diamond brooch, a castle safe and sound
Bards and jesters to entertain, and the finest purebred hounds
Why, we’re living like kings, yeah, we’re living like kings

And we’re empty, missing something and the money’s almost gone
Start to praying, really mean it, the truth begins to dawn
We are kings, and our kingdom is at hand
But don’t see and we don’t understand
We sold our birthright for a bag of gold
And the lies we’re living are gettin’ old
We are kings, and like kings, we should rise
Let the truth open our eyes

Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Versace and Chanel
Chardonnay, Tanqueray, the Palace Court Hotel
SUV, QVC, a mansion with a view
Plasma screens with movie queens, a labrador or two
Why, we’re living like kings, yeah, we’re living like kings

And no king has ever sunk down so low
And no king has ever preferred just not to know
We are kings, and our kingdom is at hand
But we don’t see, and we don’t understand
We rule short-sighted, the world be damned
Just don’t complain when we’re gettin’ slammed
We are kings, and like kings, we should rise
Let the truth open our eyes

We’re facing outward, but the way is in
For all this healing, from all this sin
All the wrongs will be turned to right
As we turn to the light

Jack Rabbit Hell

Written By: Jennifer Scott

He’s coming down the mountain, dressed all in flame

Silver snare, the angels swear when hawk cries out his name

And you can’t see the way he’s all but got you pinned

Don’t think, don’t stop, just hightail hop and run like the wind

He’s coming up behind you, run rabbit run

You haven’t got a chance if he decides that you’re the one

For he’ll find you and he’ll bind you with a word you know so well

And then he’ll take you down beside him into Jack Rabbit Hell

He’s coming through the valley, he’s wreathed all in smoke

Knife held low, the angels know the fury of his stroke

And you can’t see the way he’s all but got you skinned

Don’t flinch, don’t shake, just make your break and run like the wind

Well, he’s waiting by the burrow for you, fly rabbit fly

You’ll know you’ve breathed your last if you’re looking in his eyes

For he’ll track you and he’ll sack you with a move you know so well

And then he’ll take you down beside him into Jack Rabbit Hell

He hides out in the desert, like a specter he appears

Shotgun high, the angels cry as buckshot hits your ears

And he will surely catch you, yes, he knows your bunny way

For he was born to hunt you and you were born his prey

Well, he’s waiting on the badlands for you, run rabbit run

You haven’t got a chance if he decides that you’re the one

For he’ll claim you and he’ll tame you and he’s smiling as you yell

When he takes you down beside him into Jack Rabbit Hell
