"Pitchfork reviews Wooden Chair"

New Music: Jenny Wilson: "The Wooden Chair" [Stream]
Jenny Wilson can't quit you. The feeling could turn out to be mutual. In 2005, the former leading lady of Swedish indie rockers First Floor Power made her solo debut for the Knife's Rabid label, Love and Youth, which yielded electro-pop shoulda-been hit "Let My Shoes Lead Me Forward". She has also appeared on Robyn's The Rakamonie EP. The first single from Wilson's forthcoming album Hardships, "The Wooden Chair", is closer to American r&b than to the frosty demons of Rabid's Fever Ray, but it isn't lacking in artistry.

Wilson's expressive vocals are up front, and Robyn fans will quickly understand the apparent affinity between the two singers. The backing, though, is soulful quiet-loud pop that's by turns minimalist and ornate. A single note throbs on the bass, while unidentified percussion shakes like chains. A handclap here, a drum hit there, and soon Wilson is harmonizing with herself-- and then whooping like an Animal Collective acolyte on a booming chorus, all tympani and trilling minor-key orchestration. With its slinky rhythm and vibrato-touched singing, "The Wooden Chair" is both kiss-off and striptease at once. "I wanna leave you baby, but..." OK, that's enough. Wait-- don't go.
