Biography

“The songs on this album point to a need to look for glimpses of glory in the world. Whether it’s in the broken places or the joy-filled places, God is there,” Jenny says.

Jenny Youngman’s music comes from a place of honest vulnerability and heartfelt thoughtfulness. Organic and inspirational, Jenny’s music is all about transformation and the amazing God who orchestrates it.

Playing the piano since she was three years old, Jenny is no stranger to music and ministry. She’s logged innumerable hours singing in and leading church choirs. She’s worked in youth ministry for ten years, editing and writing youth curriculum for six of those.

“I always thought I would be a music educator, but I changed my major halfway through college. When my husband, Mark, and I went to seminary, we didn’t take our piano to our third-floor Chicago apartment. We were youth pastors at a church that used mostly organ music. So I basically lived three years without music,” Jenny says.

Jenny couldn’t wait to get back to her piano and her music. After moving to Nashville to take an editorial position at a Christian publishing house, she was ready to move out from behind her computer desk onto her piano bench. Jenny realized her work as an editor and writer had sharpened not only her writing skills but also her radar for God’s leading.

“I started paying attention to what God was working up in me. It didn’t take long for the songs to bubble up and for me to get reacquainted with my piano. Three years into thinking about writing songs, I’m now singing them for others,” Jenny says.

Jenny’s music is hope for a hurting world. It’s a glimpse of glory in the middle of the daily grind. It’s a call to follow Jesus—which means loving your neighbor as yourself.

“It’s hard to live as Jesus calls us to do,” Jenny admits. “But we have to learn to walk in the shoes of others and see the world through their eyes. We must choose to show compassion instead of judgment, kindness instead of intolerance, and love instead of hatred. That’s the kingdom coming.”

Married to a full-time minister and a mother of two, Jenny is quite familiar with the demands of balancing ministry, marriage, motherhood, and mission. She understands that others are struggling with all sorts of hurts and trying to make sense of it all.

In 2006, Jenny’s brother, Jeff, and his family moved to Nashville to be part of this ministry. Jeff sings with Jenny on most of the songs and “adds such depth to the music,” Jenny says.

“My prayer is that these songs give people hope and help them sense a ‘glimpse of glory’ when they feel the weight of the everyday world.”

Lyrics

In Your Shoes

Written By: Words and Music by Jenny Youngman

Lend me your shoes for just today
And let me walk a mile or two
I want to feel the world
the way you do
In your shoes

Her eyes look tired
and she can’t hide her weary soul
She walks this earth with burdens
I will never know

And I could hide my face
and never see her pain
Or I could learn to empathize and see this life through her eyes

The distance between
you and me is pretty thin
That’s why this war is one that
we will never win
And I could stand my ground
and never once back down
Or I could learn to compromise and see this life through your eyes

Some compassion and humility
A little kindness is all we need
To love our neighbors
as we love ourselves
And see this world
through the eyes of Christ

So lend me your shoes for just today
And let me walk a mile or two
I want to feel this earth the way you do

The Beauty of the Lord (My Cup Overflows)

Written By: Words and Music by Jenny Youngman

I have seen the amber waves
blow across the Kansas plains
And every shade of green on
smokey mountains in the Spring
I’ve stood and watched the tide
go out to rest for the night
The beauty of the Lord,
My cup overflows

There’s something in a baby’s laugh that makes me cry
The innocence that years cannot deny
I could stand and watch them sleep
And feel so full I start to weep
The beauty of the Lord,
My cup overflows

I have known a love so deep sometimes we don’t have to speak
The kind of love that lingers in the air
We stand side by side and dream
out into the night
The beauty of the Lord,
My cup overflows

We're Going to Be OK

Written By: Words and Music by Jenny Youngman

Well this black cloud will not
leave your airspace
I don’t know why
But crisis after crisis leaves us mystified
I want to fly in with my cape
and save the day
But I don’t know how
And I cannot fly

So I’ll just sit here with you in the rain
Maybe we can pray these
dark clouds away
If we can just lift up our head
to see the light of day
We’re going to be okay
I know we’re going to be okay

There’s bound to come some
trouble into every life
But not to worry, friend
It will never be too much
you’ll be comforted
Still, I’ll want to fly in with my cape
to save the day
But I cannot fly

Love You Like That

Written By: by Jenny Youngman © 2007

Tell me your story and I'll tell you mine
We'll see how it feels to lay it all on the line
To be open and vulnerable and really love each other
I'm working up the courage and making the time

That's true community
Where we live and love together
Where work looks like worship
And we share all things in common
I want to love you like that if you'll let me
I want to love you like that if you'll let me

Why is it so hard to just be who we are
we have to look perfect and hide all our scars
under that shiny smile that says you’re fine;
we both know that you’re lying
It doesn’t have to be okay; I’m going to love you anyway

Love is patient. Love is kind. It never fails. It never fails.

Glimpse of Glory

Written By: Jenny Youngman © 2007

With every sunrise, every dawn
There’s a new chance to move on
To drop your baggage and step away
Now’s your chance, a brand new day

Every morning a resurrection
See the old becoming new
A walking story of redemption
A glimpse of glory there in you
