"The Montclarion"

"On the Local Scene"

Once in a while you stumble into a good thing and you have to share it with people. The scene was Friday night, and as a favor to a friend I allowed myself to be dragged to a nightclub to see a band. It was the LoveSexy in Secaucus, with three bands playing in the main bar, and an act in their newly opened acoustic venue “ The Skyy Lounge.” The bands were the normal noise-making, semi-drunk, pop-punk wannabe’s, so I disinterestedly wandered into the acoustic venue and into something pure and powerful.

His name was Jeremy Manjorin, and he was supporting the upcoming release of his first CD “jigsaw” which is a blending of a variety of musical styles with great vocals and lyrics with true meaning. I came in after the beginning of his set, but didn’t leave until the last note was pulled from the guitar.

The songs were bold and melodic, with a powerful sense of purpose and a voice that all at once had an edge a la Robert Plant, and the comfort and control of a Duncan Sheik. The guitar floated through a variety of styles, from blues to ballad, hard rock to classical, all the while perfectly accompanying the vocals and pouring out the intensity and feeling his lyrics demanded.

Jeremy was easy with the crowd, kidding around, and all together comfortable, evoking a feeling more like hanging out with a group of friends rather than huddled cells of faceless onlookers.

I am looking forward to seeing Jeremy Manjorin perform again, and to getting his first fully produced, electric CD “jigsaw” when it is released. His sound is unique and I don’t think it’s for everyone, but if you want to experience it for yourself and get more information on this performer, just check the website out at: www.fireboxmusic.net, then you will have the opportunity to stumble into this good thing too.

Jeremy Manjorin Pieces Together a Unique Rock Sound

As published in the Italian Tribune - 30 January 2003

Upon listening to his debut CD - jigsaw - music aficionados are convinced that Jeremy Manjorin joins an impressive group of New Jersey-based singer/songwriters
An 11-track CD that blends a variety of musical styles and lyrical topics into one unique sounding album, jigsaw dances between the beauty of a complex arrangement with many pieces forming a whole and the beauty of a simple song, coming straight from the heart.
Singing and playing his guitar since he was a young boy, he thanks both parents providing musical influences. His father gave him his first guitar, and his mother introduced him to the music of John Denver.
Of course, as in any house where Italian heritage is found, Jeremy heard from all the greats - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Lou Monte, Sergio Franchi, Enrico Caruso - to name just a few. While his interests eventually turned to groups like Rush and Led Zeppelin, his musical interests were piqued by those great Italian singers.
jigsaw ranges from acoustic ballads and mid-tempo acoustic/ folk sounds to crunchy electrified blues and full blown progressive rock...there’s even a nod to grunge and alternative in the track “Fly to a Spider.” It is the variety of sounds and styles which lends itself to the uniqueness of this well-produced and crisply engineered CD.
Writing, singing, and playing every instrument to every song (save for the percussions), Jeremy cuts out a niche in an all-too-often over processed and quick-to-conform market where generic songs seemingly blend into obscurity. The vocals, ranging from appropriately soft, soulful melodies and accompaniments in the track “Beyond Blue Skies” to powerful Robert Plant-like wails in “Varick St.,” display a dynamic range coupled with an understanding and evocation of raw emotion.
While meticulously bringing each part of each song into bloom was an important part of the recording of jigsaw, the lyrical qualities of the CD should not be overlooked. Beauty is found in simplicity in the track “Simple Song” and then transformed into more solemn and somber tones in the track “Beyond Blue Skies,” which leads to a sense of questioning and nearly futility in “Stale,” where the chorus speaks to losing a sense of innocence via the surrounding scenery of corporate servitude. Finally, observations on civilization are served up with crunchy blues riffs and vocal energy in “Varick St.”
Overall, jigsaw is a well-polished, unique sounding CD, displaying a high level of musicianship. More importantly, jigsaw is filled with songs that cover a broad spectrum of styles, strengthened by powerful vocals that find solace in thoughtful and poetic lyrics.

Bio

- Beginnings -

Jeremy began singing early on, doing chorus work and glee clubs throughout his primary school years. In eighth grade he received a gift from his father that is still affecting him today…a Cort Effector electric guitar. Playing through his stereo, and blowing the speakers in the first week, Jeremy's relationship with the six string began with such tunes as Limelight, by Rush, When the Levy Breaks by Led Zeppelin, and other such classic rock anthems. Later that year he began singing and playing in a Pseudo Brit Punk trio with band mates from school.

High School gave Jeremy an acoustic guitar to add to his two electric guitars and an appreciation for folk rock and the blending of voice and string alone. While singing in a Jersey Shore hard rock cover band his junior and senior year, he began honing his acoustic skills on such performers as: Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkle, Neil Young, and thanks to his mother's influence, John Denver.

- Progression -

College found Jeremy continuing to sing in various cover bands, playing shows for the St. Peter's College student community. But it's also where Jeremy discovered a love for English Literature. And while taking a break from his music, he began learning the power of the spoken/written word. After college, Jeremy went on to receive his Master's in English Literature from Rutgers University, publishing short stories in small market press magazines and getting a few poems anthologized. It was only a short time until Jeremy would marry a love of music with the written word.

- From here to… -

Another cover band after Rutgers, playing shows on the Jersey shore while teaching English Comp at Rutgers and working a day job left Jeremy wanting more. So the writing began, taking pieces of his poetry and combining it with music derived from a multitude of influences. Two year later his first cd was ready for recording. The cd, rightfully titled "jigsaw," (released in March of 2003) mixes a variety of guitar styles and musical influences with a myriad of topics. Ready to tackle bass, piano, and synthesizers, as well as all the vocals and guitars, Jeremy wrote, recorded, and played all the parts on the cd (except the percussions, supplied by a studio drummer).
He's once again in the studio working on his second cd "Ozymandias" to be released later on in the 2003.
