Man On My Shoulder

Written By: Jeremy McNew

If you look close, you'll see a man with two little horns and pitch fork in hand
Standing on my shoulder with a grin
With forked tongue through crooked teeth he whispers lies and such to me
They’re almost always obvious roads to sin

Sometimes his words are harsh course and most times easy to ignore
But every now and again, well they're not
He says don't worry no one will mind, you won't believe the fun will find
No one will know so long as you don't get caught

That last part really should stand out, raise an eye and cast a doubt
I mean, don't get caught, that don't sound right.
But he'll nag and push with persistence that seems to have no end to it
Anything to keep me from the light

But if you look at my other shoulder it's empty and bare
There's no little man with big white wings or halo standing there
At first glance you might think that don't seem fair
But take another look I'll tell you what, listen here

I've got a Spirit full of faith and hope and love deep in my heart
And it gives me strength to stand helps me not to fall apart
He tells that little devil to shut his mouth and keep his lies
And he tells me hang on tight my son, we'll make it through the night

Now I admit I don't always win this battle that leads to sin
And it's never as fun as he says it's gonna be
It just hurts my heart and my soul, I fell used abused and not quite whole,
He just sits there and laughs pointing at me

But it's the darkest time of night without the Son to light my way
When I trip and fall it's easy to land on my knees and pray
Lord please forgive the stupid things I do and things I say
He reminds me that he's bought my soul, with blood the price was paid

I've got a Spirit full of faith and hope and love deep in my heart
And it gives me strength to stand helps me not to fall apart
He tells that little devil to shut his mouth and keep his lies
And he tells me hang on tight my son, we'll make it through the night

Oh friend take a look at your shoulder
And tell me what you see
Is the Devil trying to bring you down
Well I’ve got what you need

I've got a Spirit full of faith and hope and love deep in my heart
And it gives me strength to stand helps me not to fall apart
He tells that little devil to shut his mouth and keep his lies
And he tells me hang on tight my son, we'll make it through the night
He says hang on for dear life son, you'll make it through the night
