"The Vibraphone Vol II"

This instructional DVD by vibraphonist
Jerry Tachoir is a no-nonsense
approach to vibraphone
playing, both as a solo instrument
and as part of an ensemble. Subtitled
“The Mind of the Soloing Vibraphone
Artist,” the video provides
a glimpse into the thought processes
of a vibe soloist and is meant
to accompany Tachoir’s book, Contemporary
Mallet Method.
After an extended introduction
(a brief recap of Tachoir’s fi rst
DVD), Tachoir demonstrates and
discusses the roles and responsibilities
of vibes in a band (melodies/soloing),
chord voicing as it applies to
the vibes, solo playing (Burton grip
vs. other grips, his approach and
history, his approach to orchestration,
listening to other instruments
for inspiration), special effects (e.g.,
manual vibrato, bending notes, harmonics),
musical theory, his
thoughts while soloing, the use of
guide tones, and ways to establish a
personal musical identity. Tachoir
performs fi ve tunes during the
video that help to reinforce his musical
concepts. His relaxed delivery
and logical thoughts on approaching
the vibraphone are enlightening
and very educational.
Much of what Tachoir has to say
assumes that the viewer has some
knowledge of the terms and concepts
associated with jazz improvisation.
Viewers new to jazz may
have to do some additional research
to benefi t fully from the video. Educators
fi rst venturing into the world
of improvisation, as well as intermediate
to advanced players who
have experience with jazz, would
benefi t from The Vibraphone Vol. II.

"Catch the Vibe"

Catch the vibe at DUSK
By Ron Wynn, rwynn@nashvillecitypaper.com
June 17, 2005
This will be a most unusual summer for vibist Jerry Tachoir and the Group Tachoir. Usually this is the band’s
busy season, with appearances slated at such prestigious events as the Northsea Jazz Festival in Holland, the
Montreal International Jazz Festival or the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. But aside from a three-event
series that begins Sunday on the grounds of the historic Monthaven mansion in Hendersonville, Tachoir and
company won’t be doing much performing.
“We’ve been traveling a lot and spending so much time on the road that we’ve decided to mainly take the summer
off,” Tachoir said. “Aside from doing the three shows as part of the DUSK [Delightfully Unique Summer
Koncerts] series for the Hendersonville Arts Council, there won’t be a lot of engagements. I am doing a clinic
at the University of South Alabama later in the summer, but my daughter just graduated from high school and is
heading to New York University in the fall, so it’s time to be a dad for a while.”
The time off gives local fans the opportunity to hear Tachoir, one of the world’s fi nest vibes soloist, playing
original tunes written by composer/pianist Marlene Tachoir, who’s also a fi ne scat singer. Besides the husband/
wife vibes/piano duo, other members of the group include bassist Roy Vogt and drummer Ralph Pace.
Also on their summer schedule is recording new pieces for the latest Group Tachoir CD, which is slated for
release later this year.
“We’ve gotten a digital recording studio here and are working on several new numbers in different styles,” Tachoir
added.
Although they unfortunately don’t do many dates locally, Group Tachoir remains among the most prolifi c jazz
ensembles currently active. They’ve recently done dates in places ranging from Puerto Rico to Las Vegas, where
Tachoir faced a special problem during a solo vibes date.
“They called my name, and I walked out and here’s place that’s about four times as large as Starwood,” Tachoir
said. “I start walking and it seems like it took forever just to get to the middle of the stage. It was kind of intimidating,
but once it got started, things worked out fi ne.”
Jerry Tachoir is acclaimed among clinicians and working musicians as one of the fi nest teachers and soloists on
his instrument. Besides the group projects, he also cut an ambitious and extensive group release with guitarist
Van Manakas and headed several group sessions that are still available online at Tachoir.com.
“We love living in Hendersonville, even though there’s really not that many places around for us to play,”
Tachoir said. “So we’re really thrilled about the DUSK series, because of the opportunity to do something right
here at home.” - The City Paper

"Jerry Tachoir Group - Travels"

On this eclectic outing, the accomplished Tennessee-based mallet player Jerry Tachoir performs a collection of original material composed by he and his wife, pianist Marlene Tachoir. The tunes, some revealing a decided Chick Corea influence, range from appealing Afro-Caribbean flavored numbers ("Sketch," "Market Place," "Hip Joint") to a loping blues ("Elect Oral Blues), a thoughtful piece marked by chamberlike elegance ("Saguenay") and a beautiful ballad ("Favor"). Fretless electric bassist Roy Vogt makes some significant contributions here. - Jazz Times
