"Music: Jersey Bound Trunk Crew: Get Down Dirty Disco - Our Take"

The Jersey Bound Trunk Crew is set to hit the underground and mainstream rap circuits on fire. With their catchy beats and thoughtful lyrics, this collaboration is definitely worth checking out. On Get Down Dirty Disco, the group has produced 9 tracks worth of pure hip hop, minus all the extra fluff the mainstream tacks on these days. In fact, most will be impressed when they find out that this music comes from only three people. In an age where hip hop is constantly passed back and forth between multiple people before becoming a finished product, Emcee Hype, DJ Gumshu, and Party.Picasso have produced an excellent debut by themselves.

All of the beats on this album are excellent, and display a variety of influences. Rather than trying to sound like mainstream hip hop, Jersey Bound Trunk Crew's music showcases beats that can be traced back to hip hop, jazz, R&B, and more. All of the various compositions fit together naturally and will have listeners pushing repeat constantly. In fact, there is not one bad track on this debut album, ensuring that it will get plenty of play time from those who choose to give it a go.

So the beats are excellent, but what about the rapping itself? As it turns out, it is extremely solid. Each song has a different tempo, but the flow of the rapping is always able to keep up with the beat. In addition, the lyrics are interesting and show that the members of Jersey Bound Trunk Crew actually have some intelligence. Rather than being generic bitches and hoes rap, all of the songs on this album have interesting analogies and references, creating an extremely listenable experience.

Anyone that says white men can't rap should check out the Jersey Bound Trunk Crew, as this will likely change most people's opinions. This is a group that seems destined to go places, and perhaps gain the notoriety that artists such as Sage Francis have already achieved. If you have the chance, definitely check out Get Down Dirty Disco, as it seems destined to be an underground classic.

"get on down with your damn dirty disco, dawg!"

Have you heard any Hip Hop albums lately that remind you originality, creativity, humor, fun and redefining the parameters of the expected still exist?

Yeah, I can only think of a couple in recent history, myself.
One album is by this cat named Impulss (see my "A New Orleans Ferris Bueller, Brah" post on myspace.com/donlibido).

The other album is Get Down Dirty Disco.

Emcee Hype, DJ Gumshu and Party.Picasso (collectively, The Jersey Bound Trunk Crew) put an album out that fucks with my head, seriously, but in a good way.

Emcee Hype, whose "life soundtrack has a lot of Biz Markie," has a cadence like jazz, and I ain't talking that Kenny G. shit. His vocals dance like Nijinsky and provide the perfect compliment to the style of Gumshu and Party.Picasso, whose beats resemble something like Prince Paul and DJ Premier collaborating with Bob Dylan and Danny Elfman for a French midget porn infomercial.

Really, that is what came to mind. French midget porn infomercial.

In a nutshell, the shit rocks.

I have really only two recommendations for Jersey Bound. One, these guys need to get a distributor, like, now. More people need to hear their work. Maybe that'll light a fire under the assess of lackadaisical supposed Hip Hop artists to step their game up. Two, make a longer album. Nine tracks is a friggin' teaser. It ends too, too soon, fam. Or, if not a longer album per se, include instrumental cuts at the end for heads to fuck with for mixtapes and such. Just a thought.

At any rate, support quality, truly independent underground Hip Hop music, check out www.myspace.com/jerseyboundtrunkcrew , and buy their fucking album. Oh yeah, and check out Emcee Hype's solo EP, Apathy Irony Agony Infinity, as it is well worth the bones and will do your soul some good. - Don Libido

Bio

Jersey Bound Trunk Crew makes psychotic but true hip hop music and short films. The Crew consists of Emcee Hype on rhymes, Party.picasso on beats, mpc2000xl, guitars, & keyboards, and DJ Gumshu on the turntables, kaos pad, keyboards, & mixing. All three members draw on an extensive list of influences including old school rap, funk, jazz, poetry, film, pop culture and literature.

JBTC is the culmination of years of musicianship, producing, live performance, and the impoverished life of the artist. Hype, Party & Gumshu all play piano, guitar, bass, and drums, and apply their individual musicianship to each track they produce. The members of Jersey Bound Trunk Crew have released five albums, (two as Jersey Bound Trunk Crew) including their latest release, Get Down Dirty Disco.

Starting the week of February 5th, 2007, Jersey Bound Trunk Crew was named MTVu's Artist of the Week in their Best Music on Campus contest. They were featured on the front page of www.mtvu.com and www.bestmusiconcampus.com. The music video for their 2007 song Run.Live.Love was featured on MTVu. In March of 2007, Jersey Bound was selected as one of MTVu and Epic Records' Top 50 in their Artist of the Year contest on BestMusicOnCampus.com. The winner of the contest was to win a $1.5 million record deal with Epic Records. In April, by a combination of votes received and judging by a panel from MTVu and Epic Records, the group made it into the Top 15 in the MTVu and Epic Records contest. Each of the Top 15 artists signed an option deal with Epic Records. The MTVu and Epic Records contest ended in May 2007. Jersey Bound Trunk Crew signed a three month option contract with Epic Records. In September of 07 it was announced that Jersey Bound Trunk Crew was one of 25 college bands nominated for a MTVu Woodie Award this year.

In early October, the hip hop trio performed on tour dates for the MTV & EA Games "Rock Band Tour.”
Also in October 2007, the band’s single from their album, Get Down Dirty Disco, was chosen as the music for the closing credits of the upcoming documentary, Hooking up in College.

In additional film news, Jersey Bound Trunk Crew has been tapped to write & record an original score for an upcoming alien vs. predator animated short-film. The computer-generated short-film is due for release in summer 2008 thru Titan FX.
Hype, the group’s emcee and an author, is also penning two original screenplays. The first is a feature-length sci-fi thriller, also for Titan FX. The other script is co-authored by JBTC’s Party.Picasso, and will be independently produced by Jersey Bound Trunk Crew.

JBTC is currently finalizing their new album, which will be released as a double album packaged with the re-release of a touched up version of Get Down Dirty Disco.
