Bio

Jess Cullen is a folky, roots rock influenced singer/songwriter who grew up in the remote and culturally isolated outback of Australia. “Due to where I lived, my best friends were my horse, a dusty un-tuned piano, and my parent's old country albums.” Jess half jokes.

As a teen, she would often awake from dreams with melodies churning in her head. "I realized that if I'm literally writing songs in my sleep, I knew that was my calling." Jess reflects.

Cullen went on to study music at University for three years, all the while preparing herself for her debut album. But a great album isn't made just through learning theory alone. More importantly, it requires a rich palette of life experiences to draw from.

Realizing this, Jess slung her guitar across her back and ventured out into the world to travel. "I wanted to live out of my comfort zone and exist in a country with no plans, just my guitar; which I learnt to play in the road because I was having issues fitting my piano in my backpack!", Jess explains. “I feel like I write best when my life is uncomfortable and turbulent."

And for five years she did just that, playing shows throughout England and across Europe, eventually settling in her new home of Vancouver, BC on Canada's West Coast. It was here where Jess met producer Martin Acosta and mixing engineer Delwyn Brooks.

Her self titled release isn’t your average debut independent album. It's the culmination of a life's dream, tireless effort, introspection and focus. The first thing you notice when listening to it is that Jess has a very rich, powerful and original voice. Her songs slide effortlessly from soft introspective folk to soaring roots rock choruses, while retaining the pop sensibilities that have created some of radio's biggest stars. On it's surface, Jess's music is catchy classic-inspired rock, but underneath you get a sense of something darker. Deeper listens reveal witty, candid lyrics toying with societal angst, disillusionment, relationship struggles and the pains of her past, exorcising them in the process.

The Album was released worldwide on June 11, 2013 and Jess is committed to taking her music out on the road to audiences across the country and around the globe. Performing is where she finds her purpose, ”I come alive on stage. It’s the only place where I feel I was meant to be. I’ll follow the music wherever it takes me." Jess reflects, leaving the doors wide open to a future of exciting possibilities and opportunities.
