Jess Cullen

Jess Cullen

BandPopSinger/Songwriter

With a unique powerhouse voice supported by soaring roots rock with a classic approach, Australia's Jess Cullen is the newest recording artist to call Vancouver home. Her folk/rock/pop tunes resonate with catchy beats and witty, candid lyrics that entice a 'did she just'?

Biography

Jess Cullen is a folky, roots rock influenced singer/songwriter who grew up in the remote and culturally isolated outback of Australia. “Due to where I lived, my best friends were my horse, a dusty un-tuned piano, and my parent's old country albums.” Jess half jokes.

As a teen, she would often awake from dreams with melodies churning in her head. "I realized that if I'm literally writing songs in my sleep, I knew that was my calling." Jess reflects.

Cullen went on to study music at University for three years, all the while preparing herself for her debut album. But a great album isn't made just through learning theory alone. More importantly, it requires a rich palette of life experiences to draw from.

Realizing this, Jess slung her guitar across her back and ventured out into the world to travel. "I wanted to live out of my comfort zone and exist in a country with no plans, just my guitar; which I learnt to play in the road because I was having issues fitting my piano in my backpack!", Jess explains. “I feel like I write best when my life is uncomfortable and turbulent."

And for five years she did just that, playing shows throughout England and across Europe, eventually settling in her new home of Vancouver, BC on Canada's West Coast. It was here where Jess met producer Martin Acosta and mixing engineer Delwyn Brooks.

Her self titled release isn’t your average debut independent album. It's the culmination of a life's dream, tireless effort, introspection and focus. The first thing you notice when listening to it is that Jess has a very rich, powerful and original voice. Her songs slide effortlessly from soft introspective folk to soaring roots rock choruses, while retaining the pop sensibilities that have created some of radio's biggest stars. On it's surface, Jess's music is catchy classic-inspired rock, but underneath you get a sense of something darker. Deeper listens reveal witty, candid lyrics toying with societal angst, disillusionment, relationship struggles and the pains of her past, exorcising them in the process.

The Album was released worldwide on June 11, 2013 and Jess is committed to taking her music out on the road to audiences across the country and around the globe. Performing is where she finds her purpose, ”I come alive on stage. It’s the only place where I feel I was meant to be. I’ll follow the music wherever it takes me." Jess reflects, leaving the doors wide open to a future of exciting possibilities and opportunities.

The Anthill

Written By: Jess Cullen

Oh-oh-oh

Tell me how long can you hold your breath

Before you feel the life escaping from your bones

Tell me how long can you tip toe between the cracks

Before the world opens up and swallows you whole

The night it sees no day

And the day knows no familiar end

So I’m gonna close my eyes and pray

While I spin around in circles with these people and dance

With these people I dance,

With these people I

Oh-oh-oh-oh

It was one then two then three people that believe

Then that three turned into 30 and before knew

Those people disappeared and I was left with ghosts and tears

So I welcomed the new dawn with a virtue

The night it sees no day

And the day knows no familiar end

So I’m gonna close my eyes and pray

While I spin around in circles with these people and dance

With these people I dance,

With these people I dance,

With these people I dance,

With these people I dance

With these people I dance

And the night it sees no day

And the day knows no familiar end

So I’m gonna close my eyes and pray

While I spin around in circles with these people and dance

With these people I dance,

Oh – oh – oh - oh

Asshole

Written By: Jess Cullen

Remember me,
You told me I could never be an ugly duckling,
Because they get pretty,
And I would always be ugly,
Remember me,
Be cause I remember you
Remember me,
Because I remember you

So here we are,
And there you stand,
What a change of circumstance
You’ve got your busted ass car,
And you can’t make rent,
I’ve got the world in the palm of my hands,
As for your ex wife,
I heard she kept the house,
I’m lovin’ my life,
And I’ve figured it out,
So here’s to you and your shitty job,
As it turns out, you were wrong...
Cause you’re an asshole, you’re an asshole

So you remember me,
And you think that i got pretty,
But from what I can see,
Your life looks somewhat shitty,
So jsut forget me,
Because I’m forgetting you,
Just forget me,
Because I’m forgetting you

So here we are,
And there you stand,
What a change of circumstance
You’ve got your busted ass car,
And you can’t make rent,
I’ve got the world in the palm of my hands,
As for your ex wife,
I heard she kept the house,
I’m lovin’ my life,
And I’ve figured it out,
So here’s to you and your shitty job,
As it turns out, you were wrong...
Cause you’re an asshole you’re an ass-hole

Hello Piano

You know all my dirty lil’ secrets
You know them tried and true
I pray to god within these walls you will keep them to yourself
As Once again I confide in you
Barefoot through the bush I ran so damn hard
I could hardly catch my breath
And as I fell to the grass on my back well my heart it
Damn near beat right out of my chest

And so the voice it said to me
Yes the voice it whispered

Come he said,
I am your father,
I am your father,
So run,
I did
For my mother,
For my mother

Jesus loves me this I know,
For the bible, well the bible it tells me so
And so I reached for the highest apple in the tree
before it grew some pretty feathers and took off with its wings
All the colours they bring so much joy to my eyes
If you could only see this light
And the birdies in the trees, well they whistled back to me
As I giggled at the flower that was dancing with the bees

And so the voice it said to me
Yes the voice it whispered in my ear

Come he said,
I am your father,
I am your father,
So run,
I did
For my mother,
For my mother

Tell me now
Do I make you feel proud?
As you gaze on down
I see your face in the clouds?
Or am I losing my mind
As I’m stumble in time
And all the colours and shapes
As my heart it races oh oh

And the voice it sang to me
Yes the voice it whispered

That the birdy said
It will all be fine
It will all be fine
It will all be fine

And the voice it sang to me
Yes the voice it sang with the birds and the bees
And the flowers they walked with me
And the trees they bowed in the gentle breeze
While the birdies they guided me
To a place where the water it flows with ease
And the sun it blinded me
As the voice it whispered…

Fuck You Buddy

Written By: Jess Cullen

You dug your own grave,
And I have to say,
That mouth of yours is quite the spade now.
I wanted the truth,
Thought I saw it in you.
Truth be told you were playin’ quite the game…

You had me hangin by the tiniest thread now
And I oh I oh I don’t understand how
You can just sit back,
And watch this all unfold on me

Fuck you buddy
Just forget a word I said,
Go on, go ahead and play dead

So you’ve had your say,
And that’s quite ok,
I tell ya what heres a piece of whats on my mind
Grow some balls and you’ll see,
You could never handle me,
It takes a real man to begin to what I like,

You had me hangin by the tiniest thread now
And I oh I oh I don’t understand how
You can just sit back,
And watch this all unfold on me

Fuck you buddy
Just forget a word I said,
Go on, go ahead and play dead

You had me hangin by the tiniest thread now
And I oh I oh I don’t understand how
You can just sit back,
And watch this all unfold on me

Give it a Shot

Written By: Jess Cullen

You say hello and everything around me disappears,
Your eyes they pierce me so damn fierce now why?
When I say hello, well your smile it damn near lights me up
Your hug it gives me butterflies and I sigh

Cause you know that this is far from being over.
You know that I am far from being sober
Everyone and everything has
Got me thinking so damn what
Now come on baby let’s give it a shot.

You are there and I am here; the things I’d do to you my dear,
If I could only have the time…
The way you look, the way you talk,
Oh when you walk away,
It’s not that I don’t wanna stay but I’m tired.

Cause you know that this is far from being over.
You know that I am far from being sober
Everyone and everything has
Got me thinking so damn what
Now come on baby let’s give it a shot.

Ive never seen your eyes so green, how beautiful they are
Its ethereal and so tactical how well you play the part

And I cant help but notice, said
I cant help but notice,
Your face it wears a scar

How beautiful you are
And I hope you come undone cause
Your face it wears a scar
How beautiful you are

I feel your eyes that heavy stare as judgment comes to rest
Upon my shoulders beneath your glare; know ill do my best
To make sure that they notice
To make sure that they notice
Your face it wears a scar

How beautiful you are
And I hope you come undone cause
Your face it wears a scar
How beautiful you are

Too Many Times

Written By: Jess Cullen

So you’ve come this far and chances are you will run away,
To what is comfortable and predictable, will you ever change,
It’s getting’ old, your foolish ways, of getting by.
A story told just o-o-one to many times
Too many times, too many times

I’m done makin’ excuses for your childish whims
And my friends tell me I’m stupid for ever lettin’ you in.
So go on and forget me if you think I’m lost within
Cause I’m done being your princess cause this princess…
This princess wants a prince

Slowly creepin’ inch by inch you’re getting under my skin, and I’m
Gently bleeding as I scratch this itch to sooth the sting
It’s getting’ old and my heart is growing tired,
A story told just o-o-one too many times
Too many times, too many times

I’m done makin’ excuses for your childish whims
And my friends tell me I’m stupid for ever lettin’ you in.
So go on and forget me if you think I’m lost within
Cause I’m done being your princess cause this princess…
This princess wants a prince
Too many times, too many times

I’m done makin’ excuses for your childish whims
And my friends tell me I’m stupid for ever lettin’ you in.
So go on and forget me if you think I’m lost within
Cause I’m done being your princess cause this princess…
This princess wants a prince

Kai (Fall Song)

Written By: Jess Cullen

You call me a liar but I swear you’re a cheat
You’ve crippled my freedom but I wont be defeated
Watch me spread my wings as I blow your mind
With the mind of a child this world will be mine
I lay in the sand as I stare at the sun
As it sets I wonder how this begun,
And as the silhouettes of the mountains rise
I tossed a pebble to the falling tide

Falling tide
Kai
But things they’ve changed,
And we’ve seen better days

So I have just seen fall for the very first time
And the world made sense with you by my side

But the sun it has set and I’m finding my feet
Through the darkness I stumble, through autumns leaves
And as I look above to the forrest bones
I cant help but feel that im not alone

Not alone
Kai
But things they’ve changed,
And we’ve seen better days

So I have just seen fall for the very first time
And the world made sense with you by my side
But things they’ve changed
And we’de seen better days
So go on and walk away
I'll be standing so damn tall
But just you mind you step
Im sure you'll trip before I fall
Because I have just seen fall for the very first time
So go on and walk away
I'll be standing so damn tall
But just you mind you step
I'm sure you'll trip before I fall

Waitin’ for the train,
I’m struggling for change, said;
My eyes they are weary,
Mind it is gone
So come on train,
Take me back to my home
Sketchy & stirred I awake,
My mind I cannot escape
Dark are my thoughts,
Alight is the day
I’m not too sure,
How to keep these demons at bay boy…

Can you hear that voice?
They’re calling my name
Can you hear that noise?
Or am I goin’ insane
Trippin’ on the train
Can you hear that voice?
They’re calling your name
Saying…
Come to the other Side
Im trippin’ on the train

The journey is takin’ it’s toll
My heart hurts and I’m startin’ to fall
No matter what I do,
Or the words that I say
Nothing will save me
as I plummet from the clouds of grace

So the silence begins,
As the world kaleidoscopically spins
Lost in the night,
My mind is astray,
Follow the light,
It might take me to a better day,

You call yourself my friend,
And my heart you want me to lend.
But you can keep your distance,
I need my space,
I have to resist this
Toxic tricky game that you play

Can you hear that voice?
They’re calling your name
Saying…
Come to the other Side
Im trippin’ on the train

The Neighbour Song

Written By: Jess Cullen

I see you around,
But yesterday you caught my attention.
Wearing a blue short sleeve shirt,
Your hands were covered in dirt,
I found that attractive.

Today I saw you,
Fuel for my thoughts for the rest of the day.
When I think about you,
I get goose bumps right through,
Oh my beautiful stranger.

I want you, I miss you; these lips want to kiss you
All over I’m quivering, to get-un-der-your-skin,
I guess I’m wishing that something, would arise from this nothing,
But at the end of the day, you’re just a door step away, ooooh
Oh my beautiful neighbour

Just found out that I’m moving,
What would keep me is just one word from you,
I got what you need, I’m beggin you please.
Ohhh I don’t understand you!

I want you, I miss you; these lips want to kiss you
All over I’m quivering, to get-un-der-your-skin,
I guess I’m wishing that something, would arise from this nothing,
But at the end of the day, you’re just a door step away, ooooh
Oh my beautiful neighbour

You got me on my knees,
You’re just too hard to please.
Better sort yourself out,
Cause I’m without a doubt,
Ready to leave,
Guess I’m outta my league,
I’ve figured you out,
And I’m better off now.
OOOOOO-oooooooooh

I want you, I miss you; these lips want to kiss you
All over I’m quivering, to get-un-der-your-skin,
I guess I’m wishing that something, would arise from this nothing,
But at the end of the day, you’re just a door step away, ooooh
Oh my beautiful neighbour
get-un-der-your-skin,
I guess I’m wishing that something, would arise from this nothing,
But at the end of the day, you’re just a door step away, ooooh
Oh my beautiful neighbor
Oh my beautiful neighbour
