"Z Rock R Magazine Exclusive Interview"

Age Ain’t Nothing but A Number – Especially in Music! See what young rock n’ roll musician Jesse Kinch has to say about his career from such a young age, his career, and what is to come from this amazing artist!

JK090409-373

New York musician Jesse Kinch may be young in years, but he is definitely not young in talent and mind! At the ripe young age of just 19, Jesse has already done some major things in his music career, including being a headliner at the “Rock for Haiti” benefit concert. It is obvious that this amazing young music man was influenced by some of the greats in classic rock n’ roll. From The Beatles to Chuck Berry, you can hear the greats in his voice and guitar skills. We got to talk to Jesse about his career! Here’s what he had to say:

ZR: You picked up a guitar at the young age of 6. What drew you to the guitar as opposed to a piano or violin?

Jesse: It’s strange…I always felt like the guitar chose me. I have this memory of playing around in my boiler room one day when I was six years old and discovering this old, beat up, acoustic guitar that belonged to my father way back in the day… and when I brought it up stairs, my dad explained to me that what I was holding was a guitar and it’s what I hear on almost every song I listen to. When I held the guitar in my hand and learned my first chords that day, I was completely amazed at how natural it felt for me. Ever since then, the guitar has always and will always be a part of my soul, expression and being

ZR: Do you ever have days where you think “Man, I can’t do this!”?

Jesse: I have never had a day where I thought “man this isn’t for me” or said “you’re dreaming Jesse”. Ever since I played and sang my first note…I have lived and breathed music…and knew in my heart that I really had something. I think self-doubt can only hold you back as a musician.

ZR: Your influences definitely reflect in your music. Do they come from your parents, or was it a matter of discovering them on your own over time?

Jesse:I have a really wide variety of influences. Even before I picked up a guitar I loved listening to music. My parents were always very open minded when it came to music which was great for me being exposed to so many different artists at such a young age. I remember when I was four years old, my parents would blast Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman in the car and the next CD would be some heavy rock from the nineties band “LIVE”. ..and I would memorize and sing those songs. I even remember around that time Fleetwood Mac came out with their live album “The Dance” and I would listen that over and over as well…especially the song “The Chain”. Then when I picked up the guitar, my father introduced me into the 60’s rock artists such as the Beatles… the Doors , the rolling stones and Jimi Hendrix. Yeah…Jimi was one of my first major influences. Hearing Purple haze, All Along the Watchtower, and Foxy lady for the first time blew me away. I was so enamored with Hendrix, my dad went out and bought me a VHS tape of Hendrix playing Monterey. That’s when I knew I was going to be a performer as well…you know the whole package…Singing, playing and putting on a hell of a show. I would watch that concert over and over and pay close attention to all his nuances and dynamic flair on stage. Along with Hendrix, I was in love with The Beatles, especially Lennon. The first Beatles songs I listened to were anything from “Please Please me” to “Rubber Soul”. Those melodic songs really moved my soul at such a young age. Between Hendrix and The Beatles…I knew at only six years old that my sound was going to be driving rock with melodic melodies. The rolling stones really moved me at that age also. The first song I ever learned to play on an electric was “The Last Time” and also I think I learned the riff for “Satisfaction”. Then came “The Doors”…they were dark, heavy and melodic. A very unique sound. My dad and I would listen to their first album in the car all the time. Jim’s passionate voice blew my mind at that age. Break on through, light my fire, and whiskey bar were the first songs I got into. When I was maybe eight, I even started listening to some more modern rock like the Foo Fighters and The White Stripes. Between Dave Grohl belting out “All my Life” and Jack White singing a song like “seven nation army”, I was confident that rock lived in the 2000’s. By the time I reached age 12, I was well immersed in the grunge scene of the 90’s. Nirvana and Pearl Jam, to this day, are still two of my favorite bands. I discovered those bands right around the time I began to sing and play on stage, also forming my first band. At that time, I also began to write my first songs, so along with all the 60’s music I loved, I also had new influences from the grunge era which helped me mold my sound. What I have always loved about the grunge era, is how “Real” those artists were. The scope of the 80’s music scene was more about gimmicks than being tr - ZRockR Magazine/ Las Vegas

Name: Jesse Kinch

Sounds Like: John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain, Eric Burdon

History: Music has always been essential in my life from the moment I was born... before I even picked up the guitar, I was in love with music that was being played around the house or in the car. When the guitar came into the picture, I knew music was going to be my absolute primary focus and passion in life. I never felt that I chose the guitar; the guitar chose me when I was six years old, and that would be the instrument I would perform with on stage along with my voice in every single show I have ever played. After discovering that instrument, I was heavily into the rock 'n' roll of the '60’s such as Hendrix, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Doors, etc. Discovering '60’s rock at such a young age was really crucial for the sound I would develop in my own songs later on. When I was eleven, all the doors opened for me when I started singing and playing onstage, eventually forming my first band. Within only a year of that, I was already opening up for a major act that spawned from the CBS show "Rock Star: Supernova" and was signed to Atlantic Records - his name was Ryan Star. I was playing with band members 3x my age, which I felt was important for me in the sense of growing as a musician. By then, I was heavily immersed in the bands of the Seattle sound like Nirvana and Pearl Jam who, to this day, are still two of my favorite bands. Along with the '60’s rock, the Seattle sound helped me mold my sound as a songwriter. At that age, I began writing my first songs, so I was able to incorporate a few originals in my set list by the time I was thirteen. A lot happened between 13-15: I opened up for the winner of "Rock Star: Supernova" (Lukas Rossi) as a result of the Ryan Star show. Months later, I was invited to open up for Eddie Money at the same venue. That show really sealed my fate for the next year. A while after that, I was called down to Dix Hills Performing Arts Center to audition for the part of the young Eddie Money for his life story musical “Two Tickets to Paradise”. I got the part and at 15, I sang 14 songs and acted out nearly 80 pages of dialogue for 8 nights. The play was so professional - I think it would have passed for Broadway. Soon after that, I opened up for the band Living Colour (of "Cult of Personality" fame), was in and out of a small record deal, wrote and recorded many originals and even covers, and just recently was inducted into rock photographer Robert Knight’s Brotherhood of the Guitar. I have now reached the age of 19, almost out of my adolescence, and so much has already happened in the early stages of my life and career, though it is still only the beginning. All I can say is, what keeps me going and motivated is simply my love and passion for singing, playing, performing live, recording and purely music itself.

Future Plans: Touring and recording... releasing new songs in the near future.

UC Takeaway: "Always be true to yourself as an artist... never compromise the integrity of your music and soul." Wise words from such a young artist. Here's the thing, though: music doesn't discriminate when it comes to age. Whether you're five or fifty, it's never too early or too late to rock out to the beat of your own drum. If you feel the rhythm in your bones, pick up an instrument or grab the mic and just play around. Let music be fun, and if it feels like more than that, then consider making it your career. It can be scary, but if you don't put yourself out there, you'll never know what could have been. So listen to your heart and don't be afraid to let your inner artist out, and listen to Jesse Kinch below!

"Next Up Sessions"

The winner of the evening blew the audience away with his soulful vocals and strong guitar chops. His voice evokes a mix of John Fogerty and early Elvis, and his guitar playing is full of classic rock and punk influences. He also came up after the voting took place and played a great rendition of Richie Haven’s “Freedom” in tribute to the late artist. Congrats to Jesse! - Next Up Sessions

I have just had that experience with an extraordinary song called “Timeless Rider.” “Timeless Rider” is a richly provocative and disturbing song, opaque, ambiguous, in touch with hidden terrors. In my imagination, I can hear it being performed by the Doors. Kinch has a voice so haunting and pure that that it is sometimes hard to comprehend that it has been given to us by one so young. If he can produce and perform a song like this at age 13, what more is to follow in the years to come?”-Richard Heller/ British author, journalist and columnist

June, 2009- Dix Hills, NY – Eddie Money never stops working and since James Brown passed away he’s now considered the hardest working man in show business. Two Tickets To Paradise- The Musical- directed by John Blenn- a prominent Long Island playwright with over 50 plays to his credit- is an original play based on Eddie’s true life story. It follows Eddie and his working class family on their journey together as Eddie rebels against them in order to fulfill his dream of becoming a rock star.

Songs like “Baby Hold On,” “Take Me Home Tonight” and “Shakin” easily takes you back to the wildness of an era gone by while at the same time you root for Eddie to succeed in a business which changes as quickly as guitar players can change chords. The play also boasts an exciting array of Broadway dancers that help move the story as Young Eddie ventures to new places and meets provocative people as he continues his quest for stardom.

Two Tickets to Paradise- The Musical- will be performed at The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center in Dix Hills, NY. The 500 seat theatre is part of 5 Towns College. Dates for performances are: June 4- June 7, 2009 and June 11- June 14, 2009. You can go to www.dhpac.org to purchase tickets or for more information.

Two Tickets To Paradise- The Musical- traces Eddie’s life from his teenage years to hitting the big time! The 8 new songs highlighted throughout the play include: “These Are My Guys,” “Out To California,” “I Only Want The World For You,” “California Here I Come,” “No More Goodbyes,” “This Train Don’t Stop Here Anymore,” “Where The Wind Will Blow,” “Girls Get Up.”

The songs are reminiscent of the Sixties and will catapult you back there! As the curtain opens, we see Eddie’s first high school band- The Grapes of Wrath- and we’re quickly introduced to the lead in the show, Young Eddie. He’s played by 15 year old singer/ songwriter/ guitarist and rock sensation, Jesse Kinch who’s presently attending Eddie’s former High School Island Trees in Levittown, NY. Eddie felt the connection was more than evident.

Eddie narrates throughout the show and his trademark raspy husky voice is what makes it real and brings the story to life. Go back in time with The Money Man and you too can live the dream and regain the naivety we all had when we were young… when we thought anything was possible and it was!!!
