Biography

Meditative, introspective, melancholy, outraged, joyous and foot stomping: Jesse Lenat is, at heart, an observer and learner. With subjects ranging from his fellow man, to discarded furniture, to the birds in the sky, he seeks to understand the world through observance and personal interaction with things usual and quite unusual. Through his music, Jesse reflects on these experiences, while placing them in a format in which they can be shared. Though his perspective is fresh, his themes are universal. The commentary is always wrapped in a musical package that is appealing and, comfortingly familiar. See for yourself.
For the past ten years he has made his living acting on the stages of New York and across the country at some of the finest regional theatres as well as for film and television. Most recently jesse had the opportunity to collaborate on a musical with john mellancamp and stephen king. Other stage highlights include the hit musical "rent," the acclaimed off Broadway musical, "Floyd Collins" in which Jesse is featured on the cast recording singing the ballad of Floyd Collins (Elektra/Nonesuch), pulitzer prize winner susan lori-park's "Fucking A" with Mos Def, and a new working of Sam Shepherd’s "Tooth Of Crime". For this production, Shepherd teamed up with Grammy winning producer T-bone Burnett, who wrote the music. During rehearsals, Burnett and Lenat stuck up a friendship. When T-bone heard parts of many unfinished songs (that Jesse had been accumulating) he told Jesse that he had "some good stuff there, and now you just have to finish them‌" That, for the past 5 years, is exactly what he has been doing. "Field Recordings" was his first self released solo accoustic album. All material for this (self produced & recorded) release was captured live on a digital mini disc recorder in natural environments on his travels through New York, California, and Texas. For the past three years jesse has made his home in new york city where he has put together a kick ass band and has begun to play regularly in the area. there music lives in the world of wilco, bob dylan, david gray, jeff buckley, emmy lou, and steve earl with definite nods to woody guthrie, hank williams, ac-dc,and johnny cash.

Lyrics

ogallala

Written By: jesse lenat

there's a dirt road
along route 80
in the indian country

where nebraska has cried
a million tears or more
in just a couple hundred years

she's been dried up
and tore up too
for this concrete highway

to take these lost souls
out to a treasure trove
where nothing ever grows

ogallala today
ogallala i'm sorry that we stayed
ogallala today
i saw a black eyed suzie
sweet and lazy
on the wire she stays

there's a firey path
behind me
back to new york city

where those people
have been so stressed and frightened
not quite like ever before

but your steel cross
and your diamond avenues
no they can't never save me

but this sweet air
and her gentle carelesseness
well it almost gets me there

ogallala today
ogallala are you sorry that we
stayed?
ogallala today
i saw a black eyed suzie

sweet and lazy
she was resting
her sweet yellow head
on her wire bed...

black beauty

Written By: jesse lenat

where have you been
o my black beauty
what have you seen out there
for all these years

were you locked away upstairs
with no one to play you
is your flower still there for me
to drag thru these streets
inject you with these new machines
for 60 years or more
we've come so far
from our golden shore

when were you touched last
did it feel nice
were you misstreated
i kinda got the feeling somebody
tried to glue you down too tight
but dont you worry child
tonight i got the softest
fingers around town

i wont play you too hard
but i'll play you
for everything you've got
(maybe a little more)
we'll dance thru these street
embracing all these new machines
for 60 years or more
we've come so far
from our golden shore...

o my black beauty
i wont play you too hard
but i'll play you

i'm gonna fix you up
find you a doctor
up in maine
or maybe we'll have to fly fly fly fly...
to spain

i'm gonna readjust your neck
put a new brace inside
and maybe someday
somehow
someway
we'll fly away

irene

irene
i sure would like to
say goodnight one more time
i just cant

you say i'm a bitter man
bitter boy
why cant i
drop these addictions to cruelty
in my life
i guess thats what i saw
in you eyes

for so long i was needing
for so long
i guess i was just dreaming
that you'd come around
to this little fantasy
but o that sweetness
it was
never found

you sure do
know how
to deal out
the cruelest cards in town
i cant believe how long
i stuck aroound

you say youd like to figure out
o baby, somehow
maybe in a little country house
some kind of semblace
to this sexual doubt
i'd rather jump in the dirty river
take morphine and drown

for so long i was needing
for so long
i guess i was just dreaming
that you'd come around
to this little fantasy town
but o that sweetness
it was
never found

irene
i sure would like to
say goodnight one more time
i just cant
