"What's So Good"

What's So Good by Tobias Handke

Here's something that might be a first for Indie Shuffle: a mashup that's also a cover, courtesy of L.A. artist Jessica Rotter. Taking Rihanna's "Stay" and blending it with Miike Snow's "Animal," Rotter has created a beautifully absorbing tune that you'll have on repeat. It really is amazing how well the two songs gel together, and Rotter's strong vocals only help emphasis the tenderness of the lyrics.

Special thanks to Pigeon And Planes for the initial find, and if you enjoy it, you can check more of Rotter's work here.

"Next2Shine"

There are those who sing – and those who mashup. Jessica Rotter is an artist that does both very well. She seems to have appeared from nowhere… but is clearly going somewhere. The LA-based singer/songwriter has found herself gaining a strong fan base on Soundcloud and YouTube and has recently added the accolade of #1 record on Hypemachine.

She has teamed up with fellow singer/songwriter Emily Colombier, gaining over 100,000 plays on her SoundCloud page alone from her mashup cover of Rihanna/Mikky Ekko’s “Stay” and Miike Snow’s “Animal. Her formidable vocals and piano-driven records stand out on tracks like “Cold Water” (Damien Rice Cover) and she is drawing comparisons to proven legends such as Adele and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum.

Not only has she worked with the 2014 Grammy winners for “Album of the Year” but she has also worked with Adam Lambert and Phil Collins among others. Her background singing career has allowed her to sing for Alicia Keys, Carole King, and Quincy Jones at a Carole King benefit concert, and her voice also appears on movies such as Disney’s Frozen and Despicable Me 2. Her proven track record in this industry shows a strong a career and she has no plans of slowing down it seems. -

"RIHANNA’S “STAY” AND MIIKE SNOW’S “ANIMAL” BLEND TOGETHER PERFECTLY"

This mash-up has been in my head ever since I heard Rihanna’s “Stay.” I even tweeted about it back in April. Finally, someone with a beautiful mind (and voice) has made it happen. Here is Rihanna’s “Stay” mashed up with Miike Snow’s “Animal.” This one’s not your traditional cut-and-paste mash-up, though. It’s an original cover by Jessica Rotter, and it’s proof that these songs were meant to be merged. - Pigeons & Planes

Bio

The career of Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Jessica Rotter began at the tender age of four, when her talent was discovered during a solo at church. Fast forward a couple decades, and the songstress’ voice has been heard across multiple genres, from movies, TV shows and commercials to backing vocals and collaborations with other artists—all in addition to her own original songs. The list of artists she has worked with reads like a who’s who of the music industry today: Daft Punk, Carole King, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Quincy Jones, Martina McBride and others.

Rotter’s family roots are steeped in music as well. Her grandfather was a multi-instrument artist who wrote tunes for music legends Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Her parents both have a musical background, her mother a flutist and her father a former composer. With that background as well as her classical training from Pepperdine University in opera, musical theatre, and filmmaking, it’s no surprise that Jessica—who describes herself as a “musical storyteller”—is able to transcend creative boundaries and defy what’s expected of a modern female musician. She is just as comfortable using her voice in a major feature film (credits include Pitch Perfect 1 & 2 , Frozen and Big Hero 6) as she is performing one of her own original songs live.

In 2014, Jessica’s mashup track with Emily Colombier—entitled “Stay/Animal”—turned into an organic social media sensation, reaching #1 on HypeMachine’s chart, garnering hundreds of thousands of listens across online platforms and making its way onto iTunes. Musically, she is currently focusing on her solo performances and next album, having recently released two Singles with B-Sides, “Winter Sun” and “Hit The Ground.”

On the role of music in her life thus far, Jessica explains why she can’t imagine a career in anything else: “Music is the universal language that never has to be born in us because we are born with it—it’s where we come from and where we’re going. Music is eternal.
