"Women Folk"

Young, talented and full of ambition, singer-songwriter Jessi Lynn is determined to have her music heard. And based on the three albums she’s released in just five years, this girl is surely on a path of getting the attention she deserves.

With a sound that is a little bit country, a little rock and a bit of folk, Lynn’s songs range from the instantly infectious “Someday Soon” to soothing ballads like “Just Me & My Guitar.”

You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Like This marks Lynn’s latest offering and quite possibly, her best yet.

Womenfolk is proud to introduce the sixth in its This Woman’s Work series with the inclusion of Jessi Lynn.

I was sent Jessi’s CD “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Like This” by Ron Vogel, who plays guitar on the CD. It is one of the best artist released CDs I have heard. Being located in Nashville, I hear a lot of music and Jessi’s sound has a uniqueness to it that sets it apart from the rest of the field. She has tremendous songwriting and musical talent and her star is on the rise.

If Penny Menze says she’s good then she must be really good. I use to see Penny at Legends in Nashville and really miss her whenever I visit. She is a great talent and it’s a shame Nashville didn’t see it shinning.

"Collected Sounds"

When I took this out of the envelope and I saw the cowboy hat the first words out of my mouth were, "Hmm, she must not have read my submission page that states I am not a fan of country music." I looked at the accompanying letter and the first line said, "I read that you don't care for country music, but…" and I laughed and knew I'd like Jessi Lynn.

And I do.

I'm still not 100% sold on country music, but I do enjoy this CD. The songs are so well written and catchy I find myself singing along. I also find that I hear a snippet of a lyric that really grabs me and I have to whip out the liner notes and/or hit repeat.

Speaking of the liner notes, the booklet is really very nice. There are some great photos of Jessi and her dog (she's a dog lover, another reason to like her) and some great quotes from old country legends Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and Dwight Yoakam.

"You Ain't Seen Nothin' Like This" is a great, fun song that kicks off the CD nicely.

"Someday Soon" sounds a little Indigo Girls-ish to me. Their song "Galileo" to be exact. I don't think it's just the harmonies either.

Jessi has a very good voice for this style (these styles?). She's able to make the song sound just right…just the right amount of twang, any more and it might be approaching cheesy (and the reason I don't usually care for country). She sounds like she's having a blast too. That always helps. You can hear her smiling.

She reminds me of Amy Fairchild who's album, "Mr. Heart" remains a deserted island CD for me.

"I Know How You Feel" sounds less like old country, and more like today's pop-country types. It is a nice hooky song.

"That's Alright With Me" is another stand out song.

The recording outtakes at he end of the CD (hidden track) are pretty amusing. I think I even hear her dog barking.

If you really hate country and have a closed mind, you might want to skip this one. But if you are open-minded, enjoy music that's well written and solidly performed, and are ready to try something new give this a shot. If you already like country, I'm guessing you'll love this record.

Bio

Grammy Nominated singer / songwriter, Jessi Lynn, was born and raised with the knowledge that she can do anything as long as she is willing to work hard for it. She picked up a guitar when she was twelve, she got a job so she could afford lessons and she rode the coat tail of her older (singing) sister until she found the confidence to sing on her own.

She found her way to the stage with the influence of Reba McEntire, The Judds, Barbara Mandrell, Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Sheryl Crow and Jewel, and since then, has never looked back. "I suppose I could have done a lot of things with my life, but music captured my entire being and often times, even saved me from myself. Once music found me, there was no choice left for me to make. I knew this was what I was meant to do with my life", Lynn says.

Since 2000, Lynn has released three studio Cd’s, all of which she wrote, recorded and co-produced as well as releasing her fourth project, a “Live” Cd that she released in the fall of 2007. She has been nominated for thirteen Grammy Awards and has won four Madison Area Music Awards (MAMA), including “Album of the Year” for "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Like This" (2005) and “Country Song of The Year” & “Country Artist of The Year“ (2006) and currently holds the title of “Female Vocalist Of The Year“ (2008). With many other songwriting awards under her belt, Lynn has proven her worth as an independent artist and has been featured in numerous publications, compilations disks as well as the independent film, “Gabriel”, by Nic Woodward. Woodward also produced a DVD with Jessi Lynn to accompany her “live” Cd, of which was released in the spring of ‘08. When asked why she recorded a live Cd so early in her career, Jessi responded laughing, "Early in my career? Hell, I’ve been doing this a lot of years… but, the truth is, I just wanted to capture a moment with my band. We have accomplished so much this past year, opening for Emerson Drive, Gary Nichols and even playing Summerfest. I mean, Summerfest?? The world‘s largest music festival?? Hell yeah and I was asked to play, I didn’t have to beg, which is almost un-heard of. So yeah, the band and I have done a lot since the success of my Cd, “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Like This” and I thought it was a great idea to capture as much as we could in one ordinary night on stage. Plus, I get so many fans asking how they can get copies of the songs we play live and honestly, I was tired of hearing about it.” She says laughing. “It's a totally different feel than what you hear on the original records and I just thought it was a great idea to always have a night to remember no matter what might happen down the road. Things change, I lose players and I gain new players and each member of my band has their own musical careers, I really just wanted to capture what we have before it was gone... so, I did."

Lynn has recently re-located to Newnan, Georgia and has a full band already working the club circuit with her. She continues to travel back and forth and keeps the band in Madison, WI working as much as possible. “It’s tough to balance two bands when they are thousands of miles apart, but it’s important to keep my northern guys together. They started this whole thing with me and they helped me build the fan base up there. It’s our success, not just mine. I will always be a road girl, having two bands is just a part of that lifestyle.”

Starting over in a new city is just a part of what Lynn does. “Sometimes I’m the big dog and other times, I’m the under dog. Everyone has to start somewhere and no one really has the same status in every town. My guys in the south are incredible musicians and are eager to help build my career with me. I have no doubt that in a year or so, we’ll be the big dogs around here,” She says with a laugh.

Lynn has a long road ahead of her and at the rate she's going and with the speed of which she is going, there is little doubt that she'll get where she's headed. "The only thing that could stop me is myself and I know that isn't going to happen, so the journey is never ending. I’ve had jobs where I made a hell of a lot more money than I do now, but… I’ve never been this happy.”
