"Jet Sam - Remote"

Israeli indie rockers Jet Sam produce some nice hard grooves with colorful guitar licks. Spicy entertaining twang emanates from the guitarist while the rest of the trio sets him up time after time. Vocally it’s deep and rich with melodies. When people think of Israel they get caught up in politics and terrorism, with Jet Sam’s help they hopefully will start gushing about its lush music scene.

""I can only hope this trio can avoid the Katushas long enough to continue their musical evolution.""

Given the circumstances of the past few weeks, my first sentiment in reviewing this Tel Aviv-based band is to hope that they are still alive. And not just because Jet Sam are fellow human travelers, but because they are a solid band capable of laying down some praiseworthy tracks of rock 'n' roll.

Though named after a play on words for floating sea junk, there's hardly any junk, and the only thing floating here is the band as it weaves its way through various influences and musical styles -- from quiet as a church mouse (synagogue mouse?) jazzy vibes on "No More Heroes" to full-on, Queen-filled strutting stage rock on the live track "Man From the Park."

Many bands who attempt such wide-ranging musical travel often end up being good at none of their ports of call, but in Jet Sam's case this mobility is kosher. Jet Sam has chops, baby!

The only piece of advice I have for Jet Sam is to consider dropping "Piece of Advice" from their set. The vocals on this track were much weaker than the rest of the CD, and the song itself never seemed to find a direction. Hey, I could be wrong, but it was the one tune that failed to completely satisfy.

For all intents and purposes, though, Remote is anything but -- it's right there, in-your-face rock and roll joined with solid and welcome jazzy depressurization. I can only hope this trio can avoid the Katushas long enough to continue their musical evolution. Good luck, guys.

Bio

"When people think of Israel they get caught up in politics and terrorism, with Jet Sam's help they hopefully will start gushing about its lush music scene." - This, was written about Jet Sam in Smother magazine last April.

It's true, Israel is not the first place that comes to mind when one discusses hot rock scenes across the globe. But Jet Sam doesn't fit well with the image of a Middle Eastern country, striving for peace and food for the few camels left there; in fact they are truly an international level hard working band.

The music combines sparkles of hard rock and Post-Grunge spiced with 60's essences along with a Jazzy touch and heavy grooves; whilst emphasizing the unique songwriting and conquering melodies.

The band has performed in NY clubs in the past, all over the Village and Downtown area (places such as CBGB, Pianos', Lion's Den, Kenny's Castaways etc.) before returning to Israel in order to record their first EP - "Remote" which was released in the winter of 2006.

Nowadays, the band is booking its final dates for the east coast tour, which will take place in September-October 2006 in US.
