"Talkin’ ’Bout My (Second) Generation [Excerpt]"

Now, calling herself Renée Ciarra (although she might add the Dunaway to her stage name someday), she has teamed with Ithaca classmate Tyler Finck in a band called Jetsetter. Their first album, Vasoverga, is a dense but appealing aural collage that mixes catchy, pounding beats and melodies overlaid with sound sworls and her soaring voice. If there’s anything to compare it to, it might be imagistic, beguiling experiments put together by Moby. In brief, it offers soundtracks for imaginary urban movies. She sings of seeing “a metropolis of skewed Hirschfeld faces.”

When it’s suggested that her album sounds like a movie soundtrack, she lights up. “Not by accident!” she smiles. “We did a lot of soundtracks for friends. It’s just as much about storytelling as emotional expression. We try to create our atmospheric world.”

Bio

Renée is a renaissance girl, true to her name. She creates raw, no-holds-barred lyrics set to music that draws from pop, rock and trip-hop. Her 2007 debut album with her band, Jetsetter, was used in soundtracks for prime time dramas and reality TV shows on MTV, Oxygen and USA.

Renée currently plays live shows with new songs and Jetsetter repertoire, and does songwriting and vocal work for soundtrack spots. She heads back to the studio in fall 2009 for a solo EP and Jetsetter EP/LP.

Music has always been in Renée’s life. If she wasn’t listening to dad Dennis Dunaway (original bassist of the Alice Cooper Group) blast classic rock while she was dancing in mom Cindy Dunaway’s (rock costume designer of Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd fame) handmade dress-up wardrobe, she was probably corralling her sister Ché Monét into being back-up dancer in her homemade music video.
