Bio

Have you heard any Songs by Jill that you just love and it has become one of your favorites? If not, then you will soon get the opportunity to perceive the sounds of a loud air horn blowing as she is the conductor of a freight train that is on it’s way to deliver a shipment of new songs. Jill believes that one song does not always fit all and there is at least one tune in her catalog for everyone to love and favor. Songs by Jill are created by Jamila Majida Conner better known as Jill of Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Jill is a self-contained artist who sings, composes, plays drums, bass guitar and any instrument in the piano family with black and white keys. As a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) artist at heart she records, produces and releases her own tracks from her home project studio where she also takes on the role of engineer. Jill specializes in genres of kids, gospel, love ballads, instrumentals, commercial music jingles, and advertising slogans.

This songwriting journey began for Jill at the tender age of seven when she wrote her first gospel song and biblical puppet show. Imagine this, Jill could always hear the notes playing in her head during service as her mother would sing those praise medleys from the past like “I Get Joy When I Think About What He’s Done For Me” and “I’m A Soldier In The Army Of The Lord”. Her parents acknowledged the eagerness she had to play the piano and knew it was more than just a phase, upon searching for a music school a neighbor introduced mom and dad to a private piano instructor in the neighborhood. There were no openings at that time but the instructor saw something special inside of this little girl and just had to make room for her. Jill was very grateful to be blessed with her first piano and she was so inspired by the entrepreneur who would tune it because he was sightless and played so skillfully. During the fifth grade Jill heard a praise tune in her head she had never heard before at school that would not go away until she played it so at lunch time she rushed to her home that was right across the street to get on the piano and she has been playing by ear ever since.

Musicianship for Jill has no boundaries, she wears many musical hats, she a wonderful songstress for children, an amusing puppeteer, a sincere balladeer, a clever jingle writer and ear piano instructor. Jill comes from a long line of talented singers and ear musicians, her influences ride heavily from family members singing with quartet groups in Alabama. Her brother also has a lasting influence on her as he would mimic every television theme song, commercial, or radio hit he heard on the guitar at an early age. Jill’s mothers gift to sing and write songs where passed on to her as well as her moms strong desire to play piano at an early age. Although Jill is a born performer her main focus is writing and producing songs for other aspiring and established artist. Jill is affiliated with the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA), Songwriters Association of Washington(SAW) and has been a writer-member of the Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) since 1994.
