Index Finger Wave

Written By: Jill R. Hildebrandt

Headin’ home dead-tired from my office work
Frustrated by a tail gaitin’ jerk
Who flies ‘round after ridin’ me for miles
Start to give a gesture, but I just smile

When it feels like I’m losin’ the race
My minds shifts down to a different pace

(Chorus)
And I think of myself inchin’ down the lane, loose dusty gravel slowin’ me again
When time at the farm stood still in the rural charm
Think of my daddy and the head nod he gave with the index finger wave
Thinkin’ of those times is my way to get through another day

Pushed through the door to my efficiency
In a rundown complex in the city
Music blares through paper walls, bills stacked high
I feel the weight of this life, refuse to cry

When it feels like I’m losin’ the race
My minds shifts down to a different pace

And I think of myself inchin’ down the lane, loose dusty gravel slowin’ me again
When time at the farm stood still in the rural charm
Think of my daddy and the head nod he gave with the index finger wave
Thinkin’ of those times is my way to get through another day

(Bridge)
When my daddy died I ran like hell, from the one horse life I knew way too well
Irony’s bitter and just a lil’ sweet, ‘cause that one horse life’s now my only retreat

And I think of myself inchin’ down the lane, loose dusty gravel slowin’ me again
When time at the farm stood still in the rural charm
Think my daddy and the head nod he gave with the index finger wave
Thinkin’ of those times is my way to get through another day

Been one year since my daddy passed away
I look up and give the index finger wave
It’s my way to get through another day

Headlights on Wallpaper

Written By: Jill R. Hildebrandt

Her oldest brother watched ‘em
Many Saturday nights
Parents did the usual
Drink, dance, drink, and fight

Stay out till closin’ time
‘bout 1 or so
Pull into the driveway
She’d awake by the glow

(Chorus)
Headlights on wallpaper in her bedroom
Other kids still asleep, avoided impendin’ doom
She’d sit up, listen for cues
Screams, door slams influenced by booze
Run down, try to break ‘em up
Again playin’ the cop

Made no arrests that night
Lost her voice to screamin’
Parents went to bed angry
She’d wished she was dreamin’

Saturday came around
Enough forgotten by then
To justify the usual
Night out with their friends

Headlights on wallpaper in her bedroom
Other kids still asleep, avoided impendin’ doom
She’d sit up, listen for cues
Screams, door slams influenced by booze
Run down, try to break ‘em up
Always playin’ the cop

(Bridge)
10 year old’s now in her 30’s, family of her own
Ain’t picture perfect, but never wants her kids to see those sights or hear those sounds

Headlights on wallpaper in her bedroom
Other kids still asleep, avoided impendin’ doom
Headlights now shine in her livin’ room
Indicatin’ her husband’s home, not of impendin’ doom
She sits up, listens for the cues
Car door shuts, not influenced by booze
Meets ‘im at the porch, nothin’ to break up
She’s done playin’ the cop
