Lyrics

A Thousand Tongues

Written By: Jim Allbery (Adapted from Charles Wesley)

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of his grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread throughout the earth abroad
The wonder of your name.

And if I had a thousand tongues
What a glorious song I'd sing—
A song of praise to God on high,
My redeemer and my King.

Christ's name brings calm to all:
Our fears and sorrow cease.
For everyone who hears His call
Has found eternal peace.

Christ speaks, and with his voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

And if I had a thousand tongues
My song would never cease.
I'd sing of all the glory of the
The wonderful Prince of Peace.

Bridge:
For He broke the power of my sin,
And He set my poor soul free.
His blood poured out for all the world;
His blood poured out for me… for me!

When with my heart I first believed,
Believed with faith divine,
Power with the Holy Ghost received
To call the Savior mine.

I felt the Lord's atoning blood
To my weary soul applied;
And realized the very Son of God,
For my sins was crucified!

And if I had a thousand tongues
My song would never end
A song of praise to God on high,
My redeemer and my friend.

Yes, if I had a thousand tongues
What a joyful noise I'd raise:
An endless song of thankfulness,
An endless song of praise.

An endless song of thankfulness,
An endless song of praise.

(These lyrics are based in part from excerpts from Charles Wesley's "For the Anniversary Day of One's Conversion", which was the source of the great hymn, "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing." Lyrics adapted, revised and extended by Jim Allbery.)

Running From Nineveh

Written By: Jim Allbery

I hear the Lord calling,
But I'm scared of what he might have to say.
So I try to avoid him--
I guess I try to run away.
Just like old Jonah, oh so many years ago,
I hear him calling me, but I'm to scared to go...

I'm running from Nineveh,
And the fear of the unknown.
Running from Nineveh:
It's safer here at home.
Running from Nineveh:
It's here I'd rather stay.
Surely God and all his power
Doesn't need me, anyway.
(He can find another way...)

Well, Jonah heard the call.
He knew he should listen to the Lord.
But when he saw ship bound for the other way
He decided to climb aboard.
But when that storm rose up
And the ship was nearly lost,
He learned the mighty one
Was no one you should cross...

He was running from Nineveh:
He was trying to get away.
Running from Nineveh:
But the Lord will find a way...
Running from Nineveh:
Well, I guess you know the tale.
Jonah wound up on the inside
Of the belly of a whale...
(The belly of a whale...)

I have my “Ninevehs”,
And I bet that you have yours, too.
And when we hear the Lord calling,
We know what we should do...
Trust in the Lord--
Lay our worries to the side.
Trust him to lead us home,
And always to provide!

And go to Nineveh,
If he says that we should go.
Just go to Nineveh,
Just because the Lord said so.
Just go to Nineveh,
For his will always prevails.
And if you don't, you better watch out...
You better watch out for the whales!
(Yeah, watch out for those whales...)

My foolish pride is just
A lie and a facade.
I'm going to live my faith,
And put my trust in God!

And run to Nineveh--
Going to do what the Lord commands.
Run to Nineveh--
I'll put my trust in his loving hands!
Run to Nineveh,
For his love always prevails...
And his love is better... it's so much better...
His love is better-- better than a whale!

(The belly of a whale...
The Lord will prevail...
Gonna learn from Jonah's tale...)

The Face of a Loving God

Written By: Jim Allbery

I was sinking
Into a deep and dark despair
As cancer struck at a lady dear to me.
And it left me thinking,
Wondering how a loving God
Could let such evil happen randomly…

So I kept sinking…
And I could not understand:
I wanted God to somehow explain.
My faith was shrinking
And like Job, I called to God
And demanded that He justify her pain.

Still, I longed for a God that cared,
And so I searched, looking everywhere
For a sign that He was really there--
For some trace of a loving God.

But I found grief,
As the cancer raged ever on,
Attacking her unrelentingly.
Like a brazen thief
Stealing everything but her faith—
And I was amazed she could still believe.

So I looked for a sign that God was there--
Some shred of proof that he even cared—
And so I searched, looking everywhere
For the face of a loving God.

And in my darkness
I heard Him calling,
Breaking the silence
That seemed so appalling,
And I heard Him call my name…
Softly, He called my name…
So softly, he whispered my name.
And the vision
That he gave me
Was that eternity
In infinite glory
Outweighs any finite pain--
It dwarfs any finite pain…
It renders moot any finite pain…

And my heart was lightened,
Though I still could not understand
How God could let this tragedy unfold..
And though I was frightened,
I left it all to God’s will,
Trusting him to the future he controlled.

And I felt a peace
That I could not understand—
Touched by something
I could not comprehend--
Except that it was
The outstretched hand
And the grace of a loving God.

It was Easter Sunday
When she went to join her Lord
And I knew that she wouldn’t suffer any more.
Resurrection day:
A final lesson that she could teach
About what this life of suffering is for…

That made like Him
Like Him we rise,
And one day
We will see paradise.
On that day
We'll meet our Lord, our Christ,
By the grace of a loving God.
By the grace of a loving God,
We'll see the face of a loving God.

No Greater Love

Written By: Jim Allbery

I am amazed by God’s great love
That he would send his Son beloved--
His unstained sacrificial dove…
There could not be a greater love.

No greater love-- no greater love:
Christ died so we might live above!
The Father sent his Son beloved…
And there can be no greater love.

And on that mount of Calvary,
He suffered so, yet thought of me.
My sins nailed him to that tree,
And still my savior died for me!

No greater love-- no greater love:
Christ died so we might live above!
The Father sent his Son beloved…
And there can be no greater love.

And it makes me cry-- It makes me wince--
That he died to take away my sins,
And that we may all know Heaven’s bliss:
There is no greater love than this.

No greater love-- no greater love:
Christ died so we might live above!
The Father sent his Son beloved…
And there can be no greater love.

No greater love-- no greater love:
Christ gave his all: his precious blood!
He died for us, his own beloved…
And there can be no greater love.

I thank the Father and the Son
For their amazing gift of love!
