I'm just a story teller with a guitar. I write about the world we share, the way we treat the earth, and the way we treat each other. Simple songs from the heart. . .

Biography

I've always liked to write and make up stories. The Americana Song Academy in Sisters Oregon and Guitar lessons from Dave Mullany gave me the building blocks to start making music and putting pen to paper. Friends invited me to songwriter circles and encouraged me to find my own voice. Anxious to learn and create, I am looking for collaborators, co-writers, and singers needing material. Friends call me the lyric machine.

she says

she says by jim kindred March 28, 2009

She says she's stuck in quicksand I’m scared and it's getting deep
She says she needs a little room to stretch and a little fresh air to breathe
I've got strap in, get a grip, and hold on tight
Hold on to show her that I’m there and we'll be alright

I’m walking on eggshells every time she says. . .
I wander barefoot in the desert
On my knees I beg, I pray
Stare into the sun but I can’t see the day
she says

I feel I’m drowning, drowning in a cold green sea of pain
I feel I’ve got a beast inside of me, a beast I can’t contain
Stumbling over rocky cliffs of inner doubt and shame
Yearning for the shelter, the safety of my cave

I’m walking on eggshells every time she says. . .
I wander barefoot in the desert
On my knees I beg, I pray
Stare into the sun but I can’t see the day
she says
She says
don’t go away

Every time she says I’m sinking down I toss out a new line
Every time she says I’m empty now I fill her cup with wine
Every time she says I’m sinking well I reach out to lift her up
Every time she says I’m drained I struggle to fill her cup
she says she says

I wander barefoot in the desert
On my knees I beg, I pray
Stare into the sun but I can’t see the day
she says
She says
Please don’t go away

can't you hear my heart?

Can't you hear my heart © jim kindred July 13, 2008

Half moon smiling down on me
Trees spread out a blanket of leaves
Crickets sing in harmony they say
If you can see and hear what's true
Can’t you hear my heart breaking in two?
When you want to go our separate ways

Silence leaves me empty your words just bring me pain
How can you simply turn and walk away
Can’t you hear my heart breaking?
Can’t you hear me begging you stay?

Cat sleeping on the kitchen floor
Moth flies through the open door
What on earth am I waiting for today
Come back and say you were wrong
Didn’t like it when you were gone
Open up your heart to the light of day

Silence leaves me empty your words just bring me pain
How can you simply turn and walk away
Can’t you hear my heart breaking?
Can’t you hear me begging?

Moon lights up the field like a stage
I see you waiting at the garden gate
Where we going with this senseless escapade
Cn't we walk this road together?
Were we only meant to hurt each other?
Meet to grow then go our separate ways

Silence leaves me empty your words just bring me pain
How can you simply turn and walk away
Can’t you hear my heart breaking?
Can’t you hear me begging
Can’t you hear my heart breaking?

nearest star

Nearest Star
By jim kindred © March 18,2008

Rollin down the highway heater blastin in my face
Wheat fields and sagebrush stretch across the bare landscape
Roll across the cattle guard and park on the frozen snow
Another gulp of coffee steels me to the bitter cold

We weren’t going very far
round the bend to the nearest star
past the world that left me behind
Rolling down the road lookin for a sign

You were my first true love we lived on the third floor
We were young and confident whatever was in store
Love and life are precious now we found that on our own
We had a fight and I was wrong and you were gone

We weren’t going very far
round the bend to the nearest star
past the world that left me behind
Rolling down the road lookin for a sign

I had a dream last night we loved in a burning flame
Now you’re far away from here with nothing more to say
I look up on the hill and wonder where you are
With your friends and family just living on the nearest star
We weren’t going very far

now that I found you

Written By: jim kindred

I can't help but smile when you walk into room
give me a little while and I'll write this simple tune
about how I love you and how I need you so
now that I found you I don't want to let you go

Joyously I sing these words
Saddly I can’t say why
Naturally you hold my heart
And I don’t want to say good bye to you tonight

I know that I just met you and it's kind of complicated
We've each got some challenges to work out on our own
I'm not asking for your heart or any real commitment
now that I found you I don't want to let you go

Joyously I sing these words
Saddly I can’t say why
Naturally you hold my heart
And I don’t want to say good bye to you tonight

Feel just like a kid in the school yard
talking to a girl after class
Feel like the star of the football team
running out to catch the winning pass
and I know I oughta catch my breath
and let it happen slow
but now that I found you
I don't want to let you go

I can't help but smile when I think about your grace
I just close my eyes and I see your lovely face
It’s just a silly love song about how I need you so
but now that I found you I don't want to let you go

now that I found you I don't want to let you go
let you go
I don't want to let you go

What do you know

Written By: jim kindred

What do you know
What won’t you say
Why do you walk around with that look on your face
What have I done
How did it hurt
Did I push you down and rub your face in the dirt

Doo doo doo, doodoodoo, doodoodoo

What do you know
That you won’t tell
When did I fail to pick you up when you tripped and fell
What did I say
When we were out
We were laughing having fun when you began to pout

Doo doo doo, doodoodoo, doodoodoo

Won’t you open the door
And let me in
It’s getting cold out here and my coat is way too thin
What can I say
You haven’t heard before
I could make a fire and we could sit down on the floor

Doo doo doo, doodoodoo, doodoodoo
Doo doo doo, doodoodoo, doodoodoo

Free

Written By: jim kindred

Ten past three the raven speaks
Alone I walk this dead end street
Walk with moonlight at my feet
I light a smoke and take a drink
Just try to buy some sleep and be set free

Neighbors rise to start their day
I lie here in a bitter haze un-
like the black winged bird of prey
I find I’ve nothing new to say
Lost inside this maze of fear and pain

But I’m all over that now I'm over that now All over that now
Yes I’m all over that now all over that now All over that now
Don’t be afraid to call me baby
Don’t be afraid to knock on my door
Cuz I know I was acting a little crazy
But I scraped myself up off the floor
Yea I’m over that now all over that now I’m all over that now
Yea I’m over that now all over that now I’m all over that now

Confusion to the nth degree
I blow the horn and call retreat
It’s time to flee I run and scream
And twist the cap to help me see just
Try to buy some peace and be set free

With senses frayed I steal away
And drift into another place
Though rainbows look like shades of grey
I smile and say it’s been okay
I look for signs to get me through another day today

Cuz I’m all over that now all over that now All over that now
Yes I’m all over that now all over that now All over that now
Don’t be afraid to call me baby
Don’t be afraid to knock on my door
Cuz I know I was acting a little crazy
But I scraped myself up off the floor
I’m over that now all over that now I’m all over that now
Yes I’m all over that now all over that now All over that now

Rain keeps falling down

Rain Keeps Falling Down by jim kindred © November 2, 2008

Sprinkle Sprinkle rain falls down
Soaks my feet and floods the town
Wonder where I’ll sleep tonight
Down the road toward the guiding light

Sprinkle Sprinkle rain keeps falling down

I’ve been round a block or two looking for a home
I look at others lives and wonder why I’m all alone
I find it hard to keep a job and stay long in one place
Brother can you spare some change today

Sprinkle Sprinkle Rain keeps falling down

Hitching through Tacoma I could stop and see my Son
Hope they won’t remember last time or the lies I spun
When I get down to San Jose and land back on my feet
I’ll send some special presents and money for a Christmas tree

Sprinkle Sprinkle Rain keeps falling down

Sprinkle Sprinkle rain falls down
Floods the streets and it soaks the ground
Have you seen the sun around
Sprinkle Sprinkle Rain keeps falling down

I had it good in Anchorage but that was long ago
State job with a pension, driving tractor, blowing snow
They fired me for driving drunk I did some time in jail
Once you have a record it’s much easier to fail

Sprinkle Sprinkle Rain keeps falling down

Sprinkle Sprinkle rain falls down
Floods the streets and it soaks the ground
Have you seen the sun around
Sprinkle Sprinkle Rain keeps falling down

Effigy

Written By: Jim Kindred

Where were you? I waited til the stars burned out tonight
Patiently I watched the people pass
Rainclouds blew into my head and doused your radiant light
Thank You Yes I’ll have another glass

I shake my head to clear the buzz Remind my lungs to breathe
I struggle as you duck and dodge with subtlety and ease
From a simple bar of soap I’ll carve my love in effigy
Each day I wash my hands you’ll fade and flow into the sea
To the sea and I’ll be free

Walk along the bank and I stare into the river
Drop my clothes and step into the water
Sink into the darkness cleanse my body purge my soul
Surrender to the gentle gracious mother

I shake my head to clear the buzz Remind my lungs to breathe
I swim back to the surface with alacrity and ease
From this simple rite I’ll wash away your memory from me
Each day that I dive in you’ll fade and flow into the sea
To the sea and I’ll be free

Look Inside

Look Inside ©jim kindred March 22, 2010

It’s like waking from a dream
I opened up my eyes and life just ain’t what it seemed
The fire died your words don’t mean a thing
The years dissolve they’re crashing down, down on me
Look Inside I look inside to see a hollow shell and the charred remains
Look Inside, my heart contains the key? To release the critics blame

Was it oh so very wrong?
To raise my voice to share my heart and my song
What do you hope that you’ll retain?
Behind those walls you hide from life’s joy and pain
Look Inside look inside to see the price we pay to hide away
Look Inside, our hearts contain the key? See the soul behind the face

I was slipping down the tubes could not recall my name
Flew to the candlelight like a moth into the flame
Until I took the pen, rewrote the rules of the game
I walked out through the door into the day

You say to me it is so strange
Each day is new and yet you feel it’s all the same
Our hearts swing open like a gate
Take my hand we’ll walk this way it’s not too late
Look Inside look inside to see the map to navigate the way
Look Inside, our hearts contain the key? Spread your wings and greet the day
