Angels Don’t Always Have Halos

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE A:
Angels don’t always have halos.
Angels don’t always wear wings.
Angels don’t always dress in those white flowing gowns.
Or maybe even in any angel things.

CHORUS:
Angels wear all kinds of clothing.
Dungarees and leather caps.
Boots with zippers and shirts with snaps.
Yes, I’m sure it’s true.

Angels wear all kinds of clothing.
Ragged t-shirts and well-worn shoes.
And if it’s not yet in the daily news,
Still I’m sure it’s true.
Angels can look an awful lot like you.

BRIDGE:
And I know that angels can get lost on earth.
And I know that angels might try to hide their worth.
Might even try to fool me with how they look or act.
But those are just the oldest, sweetest heavenly lies,
And their eyes can't hide the fact,
Can't take it back that

VERSE B:
Angels don’t always have halos.
Angels don’t always wear wings.
Angels don’t always last through a lifetime or five.
I must be living in the perfect time to see an angel alive.
Look in the mirror, you'll see one survive.

CHORUS:
Oh, Angels wear all kinds of clothing.

Angels can look an awful lot like you.

Because I'm The Daddy

Written By: Jim Laev

Intro:
Why do I always get my way?
Why do I always get my say?

Yes, I hear what you ask
but you know that your task
is to love, honor, beg and obey.

Verse 1:
Is it because I'm this good lookin'?
Is it because I know what's cookin'?
Is it because you shook when I caught your eye?

Is it because you're built to serve well?
Is it because I got some nerve, well?
Is it because well, hell, there’s just blue in the sky?

Chorus:
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy.
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy.
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy.
Because I’m the Daddy.
That’s why.

Verse 2:
Is it because these boots I'm sportin'
Are good for kicks and heavy courtin',
And sortin' out what fur I'm gonna make fly.

Is it because you want a taste now?
Is it because I can’t be traced now?
Is it because I never waste a good try?

Chorus:
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy.
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy.
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy.
Because I’m the Daddy.
That’s why.

Bridge:
You ask all these questions
in your most serious voice.
I'll just make you one suggestion:
Give the hunt up,
my buttercup.
You truly do not have a choice.

Chorus/Coda:
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy, yeah.
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy, yeah.
No, no, no, no.
It’s because I’m the Daddy.
Because I’m the D-A-D-D-
Why?
I'm the Daddy!

Taking The Long Way Home

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE A:
I ain't got no helicopter.
I ain't got no time machine.
I ain't got no fancy sports car
To speed me through this change of scene.

I ain't got no wings of silver.
You might just say I take my time.
I take the pains and I take the pleasure.
I place my bets and I make my rhyme.

CHORUS:
Taking the long way home.
Taking the long way home.
Taking the long way home
Taking the long way home.

VERSE B:
I am not some frantic race horse,
Running 'round then calling quits.
Sprinting for a couple seconds;
Cutting out when heaven hits.

I like a life that lasts and lingers.
I walk a free and easy pace.
And what is fine is worth the footsteps.
What is good leaves room for grace.

CHORUS:
Taking the long way home.
Taking the long way home.
Taking the long way home
I am taking the long way home.

BRIDGE:
And as we're getting wetter and warmer,
As we walk this puddled path,
I don't feel a need be so good at complicated math.

But when it comes to human physics,
I think I know a thing like this:
That two people walking side by side
Might enjoy a sweeter kiss when they are

CHORUS:
Taking the long way home.
Taking the long way home.
Taking the long way home

I am taking the long way home.
I am taking the long way home.
I am taking the long way home.

Talkin' To An Olive

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE A:
You can come back home every day.
You can toss a bone to the pup.
You can throw a quick kiss my way,
But you got a glass to fill up.
And you got a glass to pour down.
And you got a tale you might tell.
And yer gettin’ rid of your frown.
And I got a bridge I can sell.

CHORUS:
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
I'm talkin' to myself.
I’m talkin’ to myself.
Doo-dah.
I’m talkin’ to myself.
Doo-dah.
I’m talkin’ to myself.
Doo-dah.
I said I’m talkin’ to myself.

Everybody sing together.

VERSE B:
You can come back home every day.
And I can either stay here or not.
So I guess I’ll be on my way.
Oh, this is gonna cost us a lot.
But you got a glass to pour down.
And you got a tale you might tell.
And yer gettin’ rid of your frown.
And I got a bridge.
And a well.
Well, well well, well, well,

CHORUS:
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
I’m talkin’ to myself.

One more time.
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
Hmm.
I might as well be talkin’ to an olive.
I’m talkin’ to myself.
Doo-dah.
I’m talkin’ to myself.
Oh yeah.
I’m talkin’ to myself.
Doo-dah.

Thank God I'm talkin' to myself.

Being With You Feels RIght

Written By: Jim Laev

I don't know much about three wise men
Who followed some far-off light
But all I need to know this time of year is
Being with you feels right.

I don't know much about some reindeer
Who whose prancing puts them in flight.
But all I need to know this time of year is
Being with you feels right.

I don't have the scoop on Kris Kringle,
The dish, or the dope, or the proof.
With you, though, my bells all go jingle,
So I don't need to see a sleigh a-sitting on my roof.

I don't know much about your reasons
For loving me day and night,
But all I need to know this time of year is
Being with you feels right.

One could say, for a while you've been with me.
The season makes miracles real.
This mystery's made for anytime of year.
How right with you I feel.

Lost The Directions

Written By: Jim Laev

Looks like I lost the directions to sweet affection,
And now how I am lost.
I search your eyes to find my bearing.

But all I see is the wreck of missed connection.
I guess the maps got tossed.
How can I get back to that sweet caring?

I am looking for hope, and despair instead comes.
I'm praying a prayer that I dropped some breadcrumbs.
What can I do to help me find my way?

I guess I could learn some more constellations.
Sometimes the sky holds consolations.
Maybe the stars will lead me to one more sweet day.

Looks like I lost the directions to sweet affection.
And now how I am lost.
I'm sure my compass needs repairing.

But all I see is the wreck of missed connection.
I keep my fingers crossed.
The place I'm in is barely one I'm bearing.

I am looking for hope, and despair instead comes.
I'm praying a prayer that I dropped some breadcrumbs.
What can I do to help me find my way?

I guess I could learn some more constellations.
Sometimes the sky holds consolations.
Hope I can find something to just ease the day.

I guess I could learn some more constellations.
Sometimes the sky holds consolations.
Maybe the stars will lead me to one more sweet day.

My Otter

Written By: Jim Laev

My otter
swimming out to sea
My otter
coming back to me.

You’d hear me
call you anywhere
with your dreamy streamlined ears.
I'd be calling and calling and calling
if I had any fears.
But when my otter swims out to sea
I know he’s coming back to me.

Glad to have an otter like the otter I got.
Glad to have an otter meet me right on our spot.

Glad to have an otter
who is glad to have me.

Here is the sign
Watch for how his otter paw comes up to reach mine
No more otter out to sea.

My otter.
Swimming out to sea.
My otter.
He’s coming back to me.

Monkey Business

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE 1

Here we are,
Watching bad news on T.V.,
‘Bout the cost of this and the loss of that.
I'm glad that love still is free.
We both got problems on our mind,
And not so much on our plate.
But with spare time
Not costing a dime,
We could get to working on something great.

CHORUS 1
Let's get down to monkey bizness,
Cuz bizness has gone bananas.
Let's get down to monkey bizness.
Not that we need an excuse
For letting our inner monkeys loose.
Let's get down to monkey bizness,
Cuz bizness has all gone bananas.

VERSE 2
Here we are.
Who knows just what led to this?
We could take a guess,
'Bout the whole dang mess.
Or just move in for a kiss.
It's not like you and me can fix the thing
Or even know exactly what broke.
But we can stay chill
By having our fill
Of making out,
Just us two mighty monkey folk.

CHORUS 2

Let's get down to monkey bizness,
Cuz bizness has gone bananas.
Let's get down to monkey bizness.
Next week we'll do what we must,
But here and now,
We needn’t allow
Our animal instincts to rust.
We can stay spunky with monkey bizness,
Cuz bizness has all just gone nuts and bananas.

BRIDGE

Our budget can not budge much further.
Our checkbooks, we don't want to check.
We might inch our way away from this pressure
Playing monkey-see, monkey-do all to heck.

CHORUS 3/CODA:
Let's get down to monkey bizness
Cuz bizness has gone ba-ba-ba-bananas.
Let's get down to monkey bizness.
Since right now is not all in our control,
This might be just the time to do a little monkey roll.
I know how monkey shines
Can shine anytime with you,
My monkey mine!

Might as well make some banana cream pie.

If You Don't Stand For Love (What Do You Stand For?)

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE 1

My cousin wanted me to stand up for her at her wedding.
Her parents just couldn't make it she said.
Well I just now heard 'em singing out in church.
And they mighta been sick,
And they mighta been hurt,
But it seemed pretty clear to me that they weren't dead.

VERSE 2

Kinda strange, I thought, her asking me to be the one to stand there.
I hadn't even yet seen her fiancé.
I ask why has she been hiding him and where did they meet.
Is he a drunk, is he a skunk?
She says "My love is sweet.
And by the way,
I'll be marrying a woman that day."

CHORUS 1

She said she stood up for the football team
Back in high school,
Where she was no prom queen.
And she stood up for her country
In the middle of war.
Don't ask.
She found love, she said,
And never had a hankering
To be wed.
And then this feeling spread, that
If you don't stand for love,
What do you stand for?

VERSE 3

Well, she sure did give me a whole lot to chew over,
And I wasn't sure if my teeth were strong enough.
But really what do I know and really what do I care?
Maybe my head can hold a little more than my hair.
And maybe my heart can handle some tender stuff.

CHORUS 2

Well, if she stood up for the football team,
And she's standing here with her romantic dream,
I'll do my part here to add to the local lore.
So I'll stand up tall.
'Cause if I stand for these two,
I'm kind of standing for all
Who hear affection's call.
And if I don't stand for love,
What do I stand for?

BRIDGE

Well, we can be scared of folks
Who want to wander down an aisle.
But none of us is gonna be 'round here
For more than a little while.
So why don't we:

CHORUS  3:
Stand up like for the football team.
So few of us are ever prom king or queen.
Right now we got a chance
To stand right here for something more.
So let us bless these two.
I don't know a better use of our legs today, do you?
Than for a couple this true.
And if we don't stand,
Stand up,
Stand up,
Stand up
For love,
What do we  stand for?
What do we  stand for?
What do we  stand for?

What A Difference A Beer Makes

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE 1
I got this good ol’ grampa geezer.
Hanging out on my lawn.
The sun is shining, he looks happy.
Like his troubles have gone.

Well, I been fighting with my boss,
And my sweet beauty queen,
So I ask him what his trip is,
Cuz I’d like a change of scene.

And he says:

CHORUS 1:
What a difference a beer makes.
Grab a bottle or bucket.
What a difference a beer makes.
Pop the top and go suck it.

Some days it seems you just can't get your socks to match.
Or you crave the taste of berries and you lost your favorite patch.
What a difference a beer makes.

VERSE 2:
This geezer's dealing me some wisdom as he lounges in the light. And I ask him if his life has gone the way he thought it might.
Oh, he says no and hell no!
But that he gives thanks for that.
Yeah, see, it's all of the surprise
That keeps the pulse from going flat.

And oh yes:

CHORUS 2:
What a difference a beer makes.
Grab a bottle or bucket.
What a difference a beer makes.
Pop the top and go suck it.
The brewer's done his brewing, all but puts it in your hands.
You can stay with all your worries, or go make some other plans.

What a difference a beer makes.

BRIDGE:
There's a message in a bottle
And it‘s got the sweetest words.
It says dig your time above the ground,
Cuz worms is for the birds.

CHORUS 3:
What a difference a beer makes.
Grab a bottle or bucket.
What a difference a beer makes.
Pop the top and go suck it.

Some geezer might be giving you the best of life's advice.
Or maybe you are that good ol’ geezer
Looking at his life so nice.

And it’s one two three beers, are you out for fun or to fret?
If you got one more day yet,

What a difference a beer makes!

Ain't Got The Time To Hurry

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE 1
I ain't got the time to hurry.
I ain't got one moment to rush.
There’s nothing I need
That requires more speed.
And I ain't gonna run.
So just hush.

BRIDGE 1
I know you got plans.
From here to Japan
For fanning the flames of this thing.
I'm all for that fun,
And wonders by the ton.
But they won't bring more fire than you bring.

VERSE 2
I ain't got the time to hurry.
I ain't got one second to spare.
To go scoot someplace new,
And miss looking at you.
I just ain't got the time, so there.

BRIDGE 2/TAG
I will race you for last.
Pushin' on's in my past.
I ain't got the time to hurry.
But I got plenty of time to hold fast.
With you, I got plenty of time to hold fast.

He Makes Me Breakfast

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE 1

He brings me flowers.
Holds hands at movies.
Works a jam-packed week,
But plenty of loving time with me.
Likes a shady tree.
And he makes me breakfast.

VERSE 2
Chats with my fam'ly.
He talks real easy.
Scrubs the bathroom down,
Fixes the kitchen for a kick.
Gave his keys to me right quick.
And he makes me breakfast.

BRIDGE 1

Kinda sounds like a horror flick before it turns real grim,
But no surprise has been too scary
Since I've taken up with him.

VERSE 3
He makes me breakfast.
Thick maple bacon.
Sometimes we cook together.
We still kiss if we disagree.
How did this come to be,
That he makes me breakfast?

BRIDGE 2
And it's not so much the things he does,
And all without a sound.
It's more that when he goes and does them,
It's just nice that he's around.

VERSE 4/CODA
He makes me breakfast.
No need to question.
So get yourself back to the one who's treating you just fine.
Go and show some spine.
So you burnt the breakfast.
Then you got cranky.
Hoped for perfection.
Hopped up on whiskey.
So you're hung-over.
Well, go back home and let him love you still,
If you can handle that.
Maybe you can handle that,
If he makes you breakfast.
Maybe.
He'll make you breakfast.

She Deserves To Be Missed

Written By: Jim Laev

VERSE 1
She deserves to be missed.
She deserves the nights and days of tears.
She deserves every story,
Every photograph that you hold.
Every pause.
Every look just because
You're remembering her right here.
Right here.
Right here.

VERSE 2:
She deserves to be loved forever.
She deserves the million daily places where her heart appears.
From her chair that sits waiting.
At the dinner that craves her grace.
Or the door standing open just for
One moment with her
Right here.
Right here.
She was right here,
Right here.

VERSE 3
Who deserved her kisses?
Who deserved her million gifts of good cheer?
Who could earn all that treasure?
Who could ever be worthy of that?
What she gave
Still lives on past the grave
To be carried in you.
In you it does persist.

CODA
She gave her best
Up to the last.
We got the most.
She deserves to be missed.
