Jim Laurie

Jim Laurie

 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
BandJazzAdult Contemporary

Nostalgic retro standard cover solo artist of great American songbook and rock & roll; a male Diana Krall with original songs reflecting the flavor of that era when the song stood on its own, without the bells and whistles of high tech. Songs relate love's emotion and humor.

Biography

Influenced by such artist/performers as Fats Waller, Bobby Darin, Elvis, Ray Charles, Sinatra and Billy Joel, Jim's performances reflect the best of a wide variety of music.

After spending 40 years playing other peoples songs, Jim felt it was time to explore the singer-songwriter venue. So, he's polished up the original songs from his attic, along with some fresh tunes, and is running them up the flag pole, hoping to find an audience who will salute.

Lyrics

Rosanna

Written By: Jim Laurie

All of the songs I sing everyday
Remind me of you in some special way
These songs will have to do
Till I am holding you

Rosanna, Rosanna, why am I so blessed,
That an angel like you, in my heart, came to rest
Rosanna, Rosanna, one so beautiful as you
Can you be real, Can you be true

I wasn't looking, I'd been content
To have loved? and lost, like they say
But, now that you're here, frankly my dear
I'll be damned if I'll let you slip away

Rosanna, Rosanna, why am I so blessed
That an angel like you, in my heart, came to rest

Girl Across The Sea

Written By: Jim Laurie

Once upon a time there was a girl across the sea
Who lived upon the island that is known as Sicily
She talked to waves and asked them often
Where oh where can true love be

Once upon a time there was a boy across the sea
Who wondered if he'd ever find another soul to be
One that spoke so clearly in the language of his heart
Where was she

Then one day two angels meet and looked down from above
And saw two worthy mortals so deserving to be loved
So they performed a miracle and now the story of the girl and boy
Is one

The ending of our story still remains a mystery
Can such a love be possible when stretched across the sea
The boy said yes, the girl said si
And that's the simple story of the girl across the sea

I Have a Friend

Written By: Jim Laurie

I have a friend, I talk with everyday
Beautiful friend, who is so far away
Wish I was with her, maybe someday

Well, let me tell you 'bout this friend of mine
Ocean blue eyes, and a smile so devine
She makes my heart sing, all of the time

It seems crazy, I must confess
I've never even held her is a sweet caress
Still my heart, she does possess, anyway

I really don't know, how is this will all end
Don't know if we'll ever, be more than just friends
But, I can dream, and it a sweet, sweet dream

Fat Lady's Singing

Written By: Jim Laurie

Fat lady's singing, this time it's for real,
My dog just died, but you don't care how I feel
What can I do, I don't wanna be blue

I'll become black and change my name to Duwayne
That's very white of me I know, but let me explain
She said that we're through, and I don't wanna be blue

What can I do Scarlett, where can I go
I gotta find another color in that damn rainbow
Maybe I'll be purple, maybe I'll be red
Rather than be blue I think I'd rather be dead

I should be happy to be finally through with you
With all the pain and misery, that you put me through
The color of money, that's all you were about

You green eyed girls you see just silver and gold
But, brown eyed girls, they stick around till you're old
And blue eyes girls to me, they're always been true

I'm feeling better now, cause I know just what to do
I gonna find me a girl whose eyes are brown or blue
Gonna find me a girl with brown or blue eyes in her head
And stay away from green eyed girls until I have enough bread

Blondes, redheads and brunettes, short, fat, skinny and tall
As long as they don't have green eyes, I'm gonna love 'em all
That's what I'm gonna do, cause I don't have to be blue

(Here I am ladies, free as a breeze and eager to please........)

Dream Away

Written By: Jim Laurie

I, had a dream, but now it’s gone, and I feel so blue
What, good are dreams, they hurt so bad, when they don’t come true
What to do, put the dream away

It’s, no big deal, I’m sure I’ll heal, somehow I always do
What, made me think, I had a chance, to ever be with you
Loving you, put that dream away

I was so sure I’d make you mine,
If I could keep you on the line
With pretty songs, with pretty words, for pretty you

But something happened, I’m not sure,
another friend knocked on your door
And he had more to offer, than a song

Instrumental

Be happy, I only hope, he never makes you blue
But, if that happens, just remember I am here for you
Wanting you, just a dream away,
just a dream away, just a dream away

What is Love

Written By: Jim Laurie

What is love? Well, this is what I know
It can hit like a thunderbolt, or it can sneak up slow
But, where does it come from, where does it go?
What is love? Does anyone know

Love can make you happy, it can make you sad
It can leave in an instant, and make you feel so bad
It's not in love I'm falling, despite your angel eyes
It's much more than love, it's paradise

I'm not saying you should want me
I'm not saying you should need me
I'm just saying you're the brightest light I've ever known
So, shine on, and if some light should shine on me

I won't call it love, it so much more you see
It's really paradise, just to know, you share the moon and stars
With me, when we're together, in our special way
I bless the day, and never say
What is love

No Right To Sing The Blues

Written By: Jim Laurie

I've no right to sing the blues,
She was never mine to lose,
So why is my desire, still burning

A hole into my soul,
that keeps my heart from being whole,
Unrequited love, has me yearning

It's drivin me insane,
Don't understand and can't explain
Exactly what it is, that I'm feeling

She's just a girl I know,
And I've had plenty come and go
But this one left a wound, that's not healing

I took a chance, with internet romance
And I thought it was love, that I'd found
But the one I prized, was needier than wise
And was won, by the first man come to town

Of course I wished her well, but anyone could tell
What I wanted was, for her to get burned
And in her misery, she might come back to me
A better woman, for her lesson learned

I took a chance, with internet romance
And I thought it was love, that I'd found
But the one I prized, was needier than wise
And was won, by the first man come to town

But, I've no right to sing the blues,
She was never mine to lose,
So why is my desire, still burning

A hole into my soul,
That keeps my heart from being whole,
Unrequited love, has me yearning
Unrequited love, always yearning

Afraid To Love

Written By: Jim Laurie

She’s still looking to find, her identity in he reflection of a stranger’s eyes
Knowing that the friendly stranger, won’t see through her disguise
Running from man to man, the danger she don’t understand
Never letting anyone inside, frightened little girl,
What are you are you trying to hide

Afraid to love for too long, afraid to let the feeling get too strong
Will you ever find a place to belong, frightened little girl

Well I did get to love her, she even let me come inside
I was sure that she loved me too, but turns out I was just a nice ride
Maybe I got too close for comfort, to close to where her love lies
Said my love was smothering her, frightened little girl
When will you realize

Afraid to love for too long, afraid to let the feeling get too strong
Will you ever find a place to belong, frightened little girl

Problem is I still love her, and for that I am despised
‘Cause it’s time for another man, and her plans won’t be compromised
Still I hope that someday she’ll find someone, who can set her free
From her fear of a lasting reflection, frightened little girl
you really don’t have to be

Afraid to love for too long, afraid to let the feeling get too strong
Will you ever find a place to belong, frightened little girl
Frightened little girl (repeat and fade)

Pig Roast

Written By: Jim Laurie

(If pigs could swim, we could reel them in)
But, they don't swim, so we have to raise them
On the smelly pig farm, where they can do no harm
They just wallow in their own slop all day
Till Max comes along, sticks them on a spit
Yum yum, eat 'em up, can get enough of it

Pig roast, going to a piggie barbeque
John will be there, with Patty by his side
Suzie comes along just for the ride
You're welcome too, just bring a plate
We're gonna eat, we're gonna drink, we're gonna stay up late

Now, a pig is an animal with mud on it's face
It's shoes are a terrible disgrace
But it tastes so good, I could eat it all day
Sweet pork meat, eat it any old way
Bacon and sausage, hot dogs and ham
How can anybody be a vegetarian

At the pig roast, we're going to a piggie barbeque
John will be there, with Sheila by his side
Kathy comes along just for the ride
You're welcome too, just bring a plate
We're gonna eat, we're gonna drink, we're gonna stay up late
(If pigs could swim, we could reel them in, at the pig roast)

Cheaters (He Picked His Nose As He Put On His Clothes)

Written By: Jim Laurie

He picked his nose as he put on his clothes,
in the mirror on the motel room door
Then he scratched his head, looked at her on the bed,
& said “what did we come here for?”
Now that it’s over, our desires been spent,
it’s back to work tomorrow to make the rent
While I bring home the bacon for my family,
you cook it for yours, then you watch TV
Till the next time we meet, and again can be free,
we’ll be bored, but, we won’t be lonely, we’ll be bored but we won’t be lonely

She took a cigarette from her bag, lit it, took a drag,
some smoke got in her eyes, Then she passed it to him,
and with a tearful grin, she said,
“How long do we go on living lies,
this kind of passion has become the fashion, but
What ever happened to that storybook life,
of happily ever after endings, Instead of false pretendings,
do nothing last forever anymore, nothing last forever anymore

(RIDE)

He said, “Yes, you’re right again, even this affair must end,
so let’s enjoy it while it lasts, forget about the past,
we really have no future, don’t you see,
but Still we have the present, so let’s just make it pleasant.
and not worry about tomorrow where we’ll be,
We’ll be bored but we won’t be lonely,
we’ll be bored but we won’t be lonely,
Till the next time we meet, and again can be free,
we’ll be bored, but, we won’t be lonely,
we’ll be bored but we won’t be lonely
