Hard rock musician turned into an acoustic Singer/Songwriter, with lyrics influenced by my travels, as well as classical and modern literature.

Biography

I like to say that my muse is the voice of my subconscious- that I'm constantly working on lyrics and music in my head and then in an instant I find them coming out on paper and on the guitar.

My influences range from metal (starting around age 8 with Metallica and Iron Maiden) to Alt. Country (when I was a teenager with Uncle Tupelo) to folk Singer/Songwriters (now). Three of my favorite bands/musicians are Disturbed, Son Volt and Rocky Votolato. My music is a culmination of those three influences. Some songs have a good driving beat and constant loudness inspired by metal. Others take the more mellow approach of folk songwriters.

I don't have a grand story- I'm just a normal guy writing songs to help me deal with the crap aspects of life and to savor the good parts. My hope is that you can find solace or happiness, as the case may be, through listening to my music.

Lyrics

Gladstone

Written By: Jimmy Byrum

You call it a gift
The ways that I remember
You don't have to miss me
'Cause now we're together

You won't understand
What I'm about to give
You won't understand
But now you've got someone to blame

Nothing's forever anymore
The river flows evermore
Time won't stand between
The places I want to be

You won't understand
What I'm about to give
You won't understand
But now you've got someone to blame

It happened out in the open
The breeze runnin' through my hair
The defenses now are broken
For freedom, my life ends here

A Country With Eyes

Written By: Jimmy Byrum

in the longest winter of my life
spent in a land rolling flat and bare
that beaten earth kept in disguise
sweet mystery and love in the air

each day it gave me questions
like how long will it take
to forgive my old demons
to accept my current fate

through the most barren country of eyes
feet padding gently upon soft earth
once ruled by giants my size
I feel like I've known it since birth

each day it gives me questions
like how well do you know
the life that's inside
that wants to grow

Now it's almost over
Where can I run from here
There's no shade for cover
And the sun is growing near

Battles

Written By: Jimmy Byrum

what day finds it true
to be what it always knew
in youthful age and wonder
all mysteries unproved

internecine battles
fought further inside
the rumble and rattle
from which we hide

what day finds it true
to forgive and begin anew
with aged eyes, atavistic heart
fain to relive, fain to restart

incomplete battles
further fears arise
the prize and prattle
from which we hide

what days finds it true
in the vagaries of what we knew
to complete itself with pride
to live before we die

beatific battles
motile as we are two
this love does addle
but we continue

A Bad Script

Written By: Jimmy Byrum

I know all too well
what will happen next
is it just my imagination
or remembered pretext

just last week you and me
were here and you looked at me
like you are now, and I didn't
like what you said, so please

don't let it follow script
I know I can't be what you want
and you can't make me fit
these are the words that haunt

my memory. what did you say
about being let down
can't you find a way to love
someone else

locked away under blue-gray skies
when the morning awoke and left me to die
waiting for someone to tell
me you'd already left

and now I crush and sere inside
it doesn't matter where I hide
I've got nothing left
just a pithy reply

don't let me follow script
I know I can't be what you want
and you can't make me fit
these are the words that haunt

my memory. what did you say
about being let down
can't you find a way to love
who you are now

I know all too well
what will happen next
I've seen this part many times
but always in my head you decide

that you'll stay with me
why in matters infinitely
more than words could say or be
I'm living life in front of me

as now we follow script
I know I can't be what you want
and you can't make me fit
these are the words that shunt

my memory, what do you know
about being let down
I can't love someone that can't
love themself

Settle the Score

Written By: Jimmy Byrum

in the absent, longing for a better truth
weighted down with innocent youth
I wake alone before the judgements pyre
to feel warmed by the eternal damned fire

We walked alone through soulless rooms
backed upon another- endless tombs
With what wont we wait and waste
She stirs up fears and steers our haste
(It'll all be erased)

Hope in me found before time ran out
Stops me now but leaves a doubt
I've wandered below and gone mad about
leaving my home with questionable route

two and two times, but not enough
I pack my suitcase for another bluff
Walk with me now for a minute more
and betray the purpose we're here for
(to settle the score)

Change in my being for a life of believing
in water and blood and timeless deceiving
I can't go on now, I can't be anyhow
Where there's hope, there's always doubt

can you let go of this heavenly scowl
myrmidons just hold you down
without regret you go amain
to find the light and leave this pain
(it's never the same)
(you'll never awake)
