News Details (Read/View Review online - See URL below)

Free Concerts in Grevillea Art Park

Centinela Valley area residents are invited to attend free concerts on Sundays during the month of June in Grevillea Art Park, across Manchester Blvd. from City Hall and adjacent to Inglewood High School. The concerts on June 7, 14, 21 and 28 will begin at 3:00 pm and continue through 5:00 pm.

June 7 - Estaire Godinez and her Brazilian jazz guitar, followed at 4 p.m. by Ms. Liza G. Fly, a Country songwriter and vocalist.

June 14 -Delian Music Student Ensemble and Charles (Chazzy) Green, a teacher and well known and very entertaining local jazz saxophonist.

Fathers’ Day (June 21) – R&B artist Jimmy Roland followed by the funky beats of Ms. Fae DC and Friends.

June 28 - Dennis DeLoach (known locally as dePoet for his spoken word/vocal talent) and to conclude the program – Jazz Impressions – a quartet of El Camino College’s best jazz students.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets to enjoy Sunday afternoon in the park. For those who rather have someone else prepare their food, vendors will be in the park with food and soft drinks.

If you’ve not yet visited the newly restored “History of Transportation” mural, the concerts are a great way to combine history, culture and fun. Rededicated in August 2007, the 60-panel mural, which is nearly the length of a football field, was designed by artist Helen Lundeberg for the U.S. government’s Federal Arts Project under the WPA (Works Project Administration) and installed in what was then Centinela Park in 1940.

Nearly obliterated by graffiti and tagging, the mural was boarded up and finally removed for restoration before being reassembled in the new art park. Restoration took four years and more than one million dollars. Spearheaded by the citizen’s Historic Site Preservation Committee and the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Service, restoration of the mural was funded primariliy by grants.

The rare petrachrome (tiny stone mosaic) mural is the largest of its kind in the world The Los Angeles Conservancy selected the Inglewood Mural as one of the projects to be presented with an award for outstanding achievement in the field of historic preservation.

The Sunday spring concerts are a great opportunity to enjoy viewing the world famous artwork and listen to some great music. Just show up any Sunday in June at 3:00 pm or for additional information, call Pam Renowden at 310.412.8750.

"Got To Be Real (Music Video) Premeirs on MTV LOGO network"

Dr. Kmer (not a real doctor!) is an Italian music producer and songwriter. He's teamed up with LA R&B vocalist Jimmy Roland for a dance hit called "Got To Be Real." The song made its premiere on Logo's NewNowNext Poplab this month, and we liked it enough to also share it here. To me it sounds like a slightly slowed down Sylvester disco tune (and that's a good thing in my book), but some of the plastic surgery images in the video are a tad disturbing! Check it out and tell us what you think.

Bio

Jimmy Roland was born in Taylor, Texas on September 14th. Growing up, he was around music constantly and decided early that music was to be his chosen path.

During his college years in Los Angeles (where he is currently based), he began his professional singing career as a demo session vocalist for various music production companies, producers and songwriters. This led to his first label signing in 1990, with an independent record label in Hollywood, Ca. Another signing followed five years later with a label in Toronto, ON-Canada. Roland was recording R&B/Pop tunes. In 2006, Roland began meeting Dance music producers from around the world who convinced Jimmy to record some Dance/Club tunes. These efforts were not in vain as Jimmy Roland, has had a few popular Dance tracks that received heavy rotation in dance clubs around the globe. Along with this came a new audience and fans from around the globe. The music video of his 2008 Edinet Records release 'Got To Be Real' (with a producer from Italy), also received heavy rotation, making its television debut on an MTV music channel in 2009. The song made it to the #1 spot on several internet Dance radio stations as well. Since the year 2000, many of Jimmy Roland’s performances have been on major festival main stages across America, where he has performed his popular Dance music. He has either headlined or shared main-stage billing with some of his personal favorites (i.e. Sheena Easton, KC & The Sunshine Band, Patti LaBelle) and many others. Roland's voice has also be heard on radio station IDs and jingles internationally.

Jimmy Roland's onstage persona/act has been referred to as classy and his music, inspiring. His has his own style and sound but many fans and peers compare him to his influences (i.e. Barry White, Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie, Peabo Bryson and even Dionne Warwick (his idol). In his current live shows, you will hear Jimmy Roland performing very familiar tunes of R&B/Pop by the artists mentioned; as well as a few of his originals.

What sets Jimmy Roland apart from a lot of other acts is the fact that he enjoys reaching out to everyone, giving you his all. His 6 feet - four inch frame along with his three octave baritone tenor vocal range can switch from a tear-jerking R&B ballad to a country, Nat King Cole standard, to a foot-stompin' Rock-a-billy tune in an instant. With nearly three decades of performing and recording experience, this comes as no surprise. Make plans now to see…’An Evening To Remember with Jimmy Roland’ (coming Fall ’12).
