The Players: Jim Vitale, vocals, guitar; David Sutton, bass; Craig Macintyre, drums; Peter Adams, keyboards.

Material: Displaying a firm handle on a variety of styles, Jim Vitale delivers a smooth and engaging mix of rock, blues and country. While some of his work easily falls into the folky singer/songwriter fare Genghis is known for, Vitale adds more punch with his strong voice, talented backing band and impressive guitar slinging. He jumps from quiet acoustic ballads to electric blues stomps with ease. While many would fall flat with the transition, Vitale's eclectic mastery makes it work.

Musicianship: Vitale has an accomplished cast backing him. Sutton and Macintyre consistently provide rich grooves, with a few of them referencing hard 70s funk. Adams does an excellent job of texturing songs with his piano flourishes and shines when the spotlight is handed to him for soloing. The light is usually cast on Vitale, though. While hes a skilled vocalist and acoustic guitarist, its his fiery swipes at the blues that really heat up his set quickly and assertively.

Performance: Vitale started off the night mellower than how he ended it. Kicking off with a countrified tune, the four-piece eventually settled in with mid-tempo songs like Southern Lullabies and Ocean Over Me. Up to this point, Vitale had already treated the attendees to a solid display of songwriting. Then he kicked things up a notch by strapping on his electric. Ending with tracks like Lonesome, Loveless & Blue, the foursome capped the night with a high, resounding note.

Summary: Jim Vitale mingles with a variety of genres. From pop to country to blues, the singer/songwriter keeps it all tied together with solid vocals, stirring guitar work and interesting writing. To Vitales credit, he is backed by a gifted cast. While many bands that hit multiple cross-sections of music end up jumbled, Vitale keeps ears attuned through sheer quality. Fans of electric blues should especially take note. While his demeanor is unassuming, his guitar does enough talking to make folks pay attention.

EP Release: "Echo Waiting"

Rolling up everything from rollicking New Orleans rhythms and Latin jazz to the story-telling traditions of Blues and Country music into a Pop music package, Jim Vitale sings it all with a voice that sounds like Chris Isaac drinking John Doe’s whiskey while backed by a versatile and very electric band!

Based in Los Angeles, CA, Jim Vitale and The New Vistas delve into rich traditions that are often loosely labeled “Americana.” Vitale’s songwriting is reflective of the many vanes of American music that he has apprenticed himself to over time in bands that have played the many strains of Blues, Country, New Orleans stomps, Rockabilly and even music with Tin Pan Alley/Pop sensibilities. From Roy Orbison to The Meters, from Bob Dylan to Hoagie Carmichael and with other influences including Albert King, The Staples Singers, ZZ Top, The Band, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Vitale spins tales through familiar forms while infusing them with his own distinct point of view, sweat and funk.
