Eric Zielinski, singer and guitarist for the Red Eye Jive Pilots, recently discussed their sound and vision:

Q What does the music on your new album sound like?

A Often we're put into the category of "jam band," and there's certainly an element of that on our new CD. But our songs are also colored by the musical styles that influenced each of us growing up -- from all the sub-genres of rock to elements of jazz, R&B, country and experimental music.

A friend of ours once said we sound like a cross between Pink Floyd and the White Stripes with a hint of Al Green. But maybe a better description of our sound would be "multi-influenced, genre-crossing, jazzy, post-jam rock 'n' blues with buttercream icing."

Q If not for (blank), your band wouldn't exist.

A Divine intervention brought the Red Eye Jive Pilots together -- seriously.

Three of us met while playing in a church contemporary-music group. We liked a lot of the same bands and each other's musical ability, so it was only a matter of time before we started playing together in clubs and not just in the sanctuary.

Q What is your favorite quote about your band, and who said or wrote it?

A John Petric (The Other Paper) once called me "a fresh, new voice on the scene." That meant a lot, knowing how tough he can be on local bands.

But our favorite quote is from Ric Boals, a well-known area blues artist who once said, "You guys are as tight as a gnat's (behind)."

Q Why should someone see your band?

A We like to keep things loose and have fun with the audience -- especially our drummer, Rob, who was probably a stand-up comedian in a former life.

In bars, we lean toward original and cover songs that are fun and upbeat. For instance, right now we're in a groove-and-funk phase because that's what we like to hear when we're out partying.

But sometimes we'll throw in a Hank Williams, Sesame Street or Ween song just to keep things interesting and unpredictable.

"Joe Strummer Would be proud of his tribute"

Singer-guitarist Eric Zielinski of the Red Eye Jive Pilots was the eye-opening surprise of the night. He proved to be a wonderful new voice on the scene-plaintive yet with a mellow huskiness, kind of like the Band's Levon Helm. "Career Opportunities" got a jamband groove, and it was good.

"Think Floyd"

Think Floyd
By Chris DeVille

What: Red Eye Jive Pilots

When: Saturday, March 8

Where: Newport Music Hall, Campus

Web: redeyejivepilots.com

The first thing that came to mind when spinning $100 Hamburger, the latest disc from local rockers Red Eye Jive Pilots, was Squeeze. "Sensible Shoes," the album's opening track, is the same kind of spunky, carefree rocker as the English New Wave act's hit "Tempted." The major difference is James Dean's organ, which trades that song's smooth, soulful sound for a playfully distorted crunch.

The Pilots can't be summed up so easily. They shift their sound a lot from song to song, but Dean's splendid work on keyboards and organs is a constant. His talents bridge the gaps between the Ryan Adams rock of "Spilt Milk," peppy album closer "Afternoon Coma" and spacey slow dance-turned-McCartney pop ditty "Cognition Cruise."

Lead Pilot Eric Zielinski played in town as a solo artist for a decade before forming Red Eye Jive Pilots in 2003. The quartet has been appearing consistently in a wide range of area venues since then. Saturday they'll play one of their biggest shows yet, opening for Pink Floyd tribute act Wish You Were Here at Newport Music Hall.

The openers hope to win themselves a new slew of fans Saturday, so be sure to show up on "Time" — 7:45 p.m. sharp — and bring enough "Money" ($13) to get into "The Great Gig in the Sky." Then you'll know whether the upstart locals can "Eclipse" the headliners. Wear "Any Colour You Like."
