Biography

My earliest exposure to music was primarily classical and show tunes, the best, of course, being West Side Story, followed by, with the help of my brothers, Blues, Folk, Calypso, Rock 'n Roll, some Country, Blue Grass, Jazz, Reggae, Soul, Funk. All of these different forms of musical expression embedded themselves into my musical sub-conscience and all helped to create a curious and compelling blend which I simply refer to as ' folk-rock-country-blues'
I am never happier than when I am playing music, whether it be in a public or private venue, The Town Green ,weddings, reunions, company partys, coffee houses and clubs with my Cape Cod band, "The J. Lay Band', and playing solo acoustic gigs around the east coast of Florida region where I currently live, to sitting around in my boxers, sprawled out on the couch with Martin in hands.
I have recorded 24 of my original songs, some obviously demo but most professionally arranged and produced. I am very proud of my music and grateful for the beautiful gift of music in my life.
I currently have a huge catalogue of new and old songs, some of which are begging for lyrics. I would be interested in collborating with a ' like-minded , musician - lyricist.
Music is the soothing salve of my life, my ticket back to me when I'm lost in the sensory overloaded turmoil of modern life and stalled creativity.
Music, like the ocean, is my church and every song comes to me as a sermon on a wave. Aaaamen !

Lyrics

ONE MAN

Written By: J T. Lay

I live alone in a third floor walk-up with my only companion, Jake

Fat and stupid selfish cat and reminder of my most recent mistake

He came complete with a girl and a promise and I took them right into my flat.

She disappeared with my cd's and some money
Left a mess and this miserable cat.

chorus:

Just as one man's woman could
end up as another man's wife,
oh yeah, one man's prison just
as easily be another man's life.

I sleep all morning, that don't mean that I'm lazy 'cause I'm up working hard at night.

Pickin' guitar at the Stoned Horse Tavern, playing songs 'til the morning's light.

Be pretty cool to sell a million records , have a taste of the wealth and fame.

But I can live on tips and quiet recognition, cause I'm still playing my own game.

chorus:

Just as one man's future can be
built upon another man' back
One man's living just another
man's heart attack.

bridge:

If I could see where I'm gonna be
in 20 years,really don't want to
know.
I could leave any time that I
please but I like it here, really
don't wanna go.You see I got
my fears but I don't let 'em show
because...

chorus:

One man's darkness is another
man's guiding light
One man's dreaming is just
another man's sleepless night.

Well, I got some family and my friends who I count on to provide me with a laugh and a meal

They never judge me by the colors I'm showing and they always seem
to know how I feel.

Then there are others who will claim that they know me because they come listen to my song

They must be experts on the world as we know it 'cause they're telling me I'm doing it wrong.

chorus:

Just as one man's wisdom is
another man's bad advise
One man's religion is just another
man's roll of the dice,
better roll them twice.

Ain't that right
yeah that's right
Ain't that right
yeah that's right
Ain't that right
yeah that's right
Yeah that's right

As Lovers Do

Written By: John Thomas Lay

Come to me sweetly now
Come to me anyhow
The dance of love is slow
Allowing our passion to grow

This moment belongs to us
Surrendering all of our trust
Let's find out what lovers do
When they're loving as much as I love you

The promise of when we touch
Silently says so much
The warmth of your glowing skin
Signals our love to begin

Caressing with softest lips
Magical fingertips
Suspended in time in this place
Absorbing the beauty and love of your face

chorus

New levels of giving and take
Abound from the love that we
make
Moving as one in tune with
each other

Low whispers and lingering sighs
Warm tears of love fill our eyes
As we succumb to the bliss known
Known only to lovers

Flickering candle lit hue
Even the shadow of you
Makes my heart skip a beat
I've never known loving so sweet

Tumbling down through the night
Both of us getting it right
All of my love you will keep
Deeply within you as you go to sleep

instrumental verse

chorus

New levels of giving and take
Abound from the love that we
make
Moving as one in tune with
each other

Low whispers and lingering cries
Warm tears of love fill our eyes
As we succumb to the bliss known
only to others

Come to me sweetly now
Come to me anyhow
The dance of love is slow
Allowing our passion to grow

This moment belongs to us
Surrendering all of our trust
Let's find out what lovers do
When they're loving as much as I love you.
When they're loving as much as I love you
When they're loving as much...
As I love you

Hear Her Scream

Written By: John T. Lay

I don't know, what could be the reason
For all this denial
Is fighting back out of season and complacency in style?

And tell me,who do we turn to
When we run out of answers?
Is it the man with the numbers
Handing out another cancer on our Earth...

chorus

...calling , falling
Mother Earth
Listen close and you will hear
Her scream...

You know it's just been two hundred
years of solutions
To finally challenge a hundred
million years of evolution

And ain't it just like today
to blind our eyes to tomorrow?
But how much longer can we stay
if we bury all the sorrow for our earth...

chorus ( repeat )
break

Why do we, protect all the whales
when we're killing the oceans?
Why bother saving the eagles when we're cutting all the trees?

We'll turn our backs on the business
that poisons air and our water
And we'll just teach all our children
how to carry on the slaughter of
our Earth

chorus

repeat 1st verse

chorus (2x)

Where I Live

Written By: John T. Lay

Where I Live

Looking down into emerald green waters I see
A world of endless creation to help one believe
Hypnotized by the soft tidal flow through the grass
Ebbing out over white sand and rocks through the pass

Chorus

Where I live I will die
Where the oceans kiss the sky
Like an island I am free, what a place to be
where my love and my life meet the sea

Like a black pearl she soaks up the night late in June
The world below comes alive with the moon
On the beach a great turtle is digging her nest
As the mangroves creep on through the night to the west

Chorus
Instrumental bridge

Take the hand of my love as she wades through the stream
Ospreys, dolphin and manatees live in our dream
Take the boat out where calm gulf stream waters turn blue
Give in to gentle sweet ocean rhythms with you

Chorus

Where I live I will die
Where the oceans kiss the sky
Like an island we are free, You and me
Where our love and our lives...... meet the sea.

Tide of Life

Written By: John T. Lay

Tide of Life

Remembering a dream that I abandoned long ago
Was it nothing more than smoke against the glass
Well it might have been a sign or maybe something that I ate
But I never let it keep me up at night
As I navigate the rolling tide of life.

I paint another picture,
This one turns out black and white
The colors kept on falling on the floor
Though what I visualize is different than what’s hanging on my wall
I see the way it captures all the light
As I navigate the rolling tide of life.

Chorus

Rise or fall
Living it all
Carrying me to I don’t know where

I’m here for the ride
Got nothing but time
Day or night, it feels alright
As I navigate the rolling tide of life

Just as footprints on the shoreline are enveloped by the sea
The days I left behind me slip away
All those photographs and melodies remind me where I’ve been
But the memories aren’t fogging up my sight
As I navigate the rolling tide of life.

Instrumental

Chorus

Well I’m looking all around me, see the world rolling in
I try to keep my head above the waves
I had another dream
And this one feels a lot like home
No matter where I am beneath the sky
As I navigate the tide
With the world by my side
As I navigate the rolling tide of life

They're Here

Written By: John T. Lay

They're here as a hope for the future
They're here 'cause it happens that way
A miracle of life and creation
Hear them singing to the music of every new day

They're hear when we need a reminder
That life can be simple and pure
And we're here to love and to guide them
So that they may proceed feeling safe and secure

chorus -

There are times when we don't
feel like giving
And we feel like we've been
pulled in half
Then they show us the light side
living
And leave us no choice but to
sit back and laugh

They're here for a lifetime of wonder
Endowed with great powers at birth
All the knowledge and wisdom to ponder
They stand to inherit and better this
earth

So if we show them respect and commend them
The best path in life they will find
Let them set their own pace and defend them
Because they'll only be children for a very short time

chorus -

There are times when we don't
feel like giving
And we feel like we've been
pulled in half
Then they show us the light
side of living
And leave us no choice
but to sit back and laugh

repeat 1st. verse

...hear them singing to the music of every new day
hear them singing to the music of every new day
hear them singing to the music
of every... new day.
