Jo Ayling

 Sydney, New South Wales, AUS
BandPopSinger/Songwriter

Sounds like Amanda Palmer and Katie Noonan dancing in Kate Bush's ballet shoes! Quirky, eclectic and sometimes on the bizarre side of cute, Jo's songwriting is sophisticated and emotive. Her idiosyncratic and ambitious tunes are varied yet accessible to the fringes of the adult mainstream.

Biography

"Truly original in not only composition but over all sound...not even close to anything mainstream in this genre on the market today that I have heard!" (Anita Donlon, founder Independant Musos Network inc/National Chairman MMF Aus)

Hailing from London’s South East, Sydney based performing songwriter and recording artist Jo Ayling redefines quirky with her diverse compilation of melodic tunes, likened to a young Joni Mitchell, Amanda Palmer, Kate Bush, and Regina Spektor.

“Jo is a very emotive performer who demands audience attention” (Shane Rozario – Artist and performance photographer)

Using her beloved piano as the primary instrument for most of her tracks, Jo has combined years of original instrumental compositions with fresh melodies and enticing lyrics to create her debut Album 'A Rabbit’s Tale.' A delightful compilation of well-crafted songs which juxtapose profoundness with naivety, exuberance with sincerity and fantasy with pragmatism. Jo incorporates fun with brass and kitchen percussion, pots and pans, leg slapping and pennywhistles and a newfound love for the melodeon along with her dulcet piano tones which underline every track.

A completely independent labour of love, Jo’s inspiration comes from daily observation, religion, fairytales, bizaare magazine articles, old movies, lifes twists and turns, heartache and heartbreak; so not surprisingly as noted by Asher Christophers (Austep music) This talented songstress successfully covers a diverse range of musical styles within one album"

"Beautifully crafted, intriguing, intelligent, captivating tracks!" (Simon Forman; perfectpitch.com.au)

Jo Ayling is performing acoustic gigs around Sydney and will soon be launching 'A Rabbit’s Tale'. She continues to write daily and submit songs to other performing artists and music bodies.

Currently promoting herself Jo is seeking interested parties to help gain more recognition and exposure and take this eclectic mix to virgin ears in the hope of stumbling upon a few that fancy what they hear…

An Exception

Written By: Jo Ayling

V1
He said ‘Girl you got a wicked tongue
But I like the way you play
Mouth as dry as my lips
Will keep me up for days’

V2
He said ‘Jolene I got your back
If you show me a little skin’
Take the soap from my rag
To wash your dirty mouth out with

PRE
You never concentrated on the fact that I would never run from myself
But you contended with me, pretended to be someone I could not help
If you crack I will break you, I wouldn’t intentionally hurt no-one else,

CH
I would never hurt nobody
I would never hurt no-one
I would never hurt nobody
I would never hurt no-one
But for you I would make an exception!

V3
He said ‘Jolene we made a pact
And I promise to take you far’
Take your hands from my back
I know who my friends are

PRE

CH

BR
You promised me everything but it ain’t enough
You made me believe this world was big and scary and tough
Then I found out my own way that I’d much rather be
Stuck in a hole all alone or singing up in a tree

Again

Written By: Jo Ayling

V1
I'm up, you're down
You're coming round again
Your Black eyes stained
Your face is shamed again

Ch
You've been dressing in my clothes again
Step on everybodies toes and then
You wonder when
The penny's gonna drop
And finally you'll stop
Remembering...

V2
You wore it out
Stitched up your doubt again
Your white hands pale
Your face is shamed again

Ch

Br
You can't build broken bridges
I'm stuck here in the sand
Adding fuel to a fire
But its my hand that burns
And it hurts

A Rabbit's Tale

Written By: Jo Ayling

A Rabbit’s Tale

V1
So delicate so intricate
So much for love
Even though you're living a lie
Even though I tell you I'm fine
Never planned to ask myself why
I'm trying to find out

V2
Don't handcuff me, I used to dream
I used to love
I used to have my head in the clouds
I used to think I wouldn't fall down
I used to think the trampoline bounced
I'm trying to climb out

INT
Sit on my couch look in my eyes
Imagine sandy beaches and sunny spring time
Where everybody’s happy, the forest is your friend
The rabbit’s fury tail is with you ‘til the end
You don't have to pretend
The forest has no end

INSTRUMENTAL

V3
So delicate, so over it
So much for love
I wanna put my trust in your hands
But I know that given the chance
I'd find a way to sell out romance
I'm trying to find out
I’m trying to climb out
I’m trying to find how…

Over-Rated

Over-Rated

V1
Is Dylan over-rated?
I don't know
Do I care?
Has folk been re-instated
I don't know
Do I care?

Does my underwear match?
Lead me to your dreams
In your love motels
With your sex machines

V2
Should girls be illustrated?
I don't know
Do I care?
We may as well be naked
I don't know
Do I care?

Rich kids in cars
Tea in the park
Beautiful boys
Smoking after dark

INT
Rich kids in cars
Teas in the park
Beautiful boys
Kiss in the dark

Young kids in bars
Swimming with sharks
Boys kissing boys
Those beautiful boys

V3
Should true love be tainted?
I don't know
Do I care?
That it's mostly silver plated
I don't know
Do I care?

Members only clubs
Promote the noble
And the little people
Under the tables

V4
Is Dylan over-rated?
I don't know
Do I care?
Has folk been re- instated
I don't know
Do I care?

Why do we fucking swear
That we're all happy
On the inside
Keep up and tell me

OUT
Is Dylan over-rated?
I don't know
Do I care?
That I don't know
And I don't care
And I don’t know
And I don’t care
And I don’t know…

Something I Said

Written By: Jo Ayling

V1
You re-assured me that I would be your everything
And you would never leave me but I
I don’t wanna know
And if you carry on living the way that you are living
I can’t carry your weight for you, it’s just
I don’t wanna know

PRE
Stuck in the corner with my hands tied down and I just can’t leave this
Stuck in the corner while the world goes round and I’m spinning with it
Stuck in the corner and I think I should warn you that
I can’t reach you

CH
I can’t reach you and if you feel like giving in I found the,
Found the handle that’s turns inside your head
I can’t reach you and I,
Guess it was something I said

V2
I told you once I’ll tell you twice that hope is waiting for you
Reach out and touch it but you
You don’t wanna know
And if you carry on living the way that you are living
I pray the Lord will save you but,
You don’t wanna know

Hollywood Lies

Written By: Jo Ayling

V1
Up at thirty thousand feet
Didn’t think you’d reach me up here
But in these four walls behind my eyes
A build up of tears
How many times
Have we been here before
So I light up a white tipped cigarette
But I don’t smoke anymore

PRE
Stop looking at me I’m scared you can read me
I get what you feel, why won’t you release me

CH
You can’t re-write the book
Or lose a few pages
Or steal a slice of time
I tell you I’m alright
This has gone on for too long
Time travel doesn’t work
Hollywood lies

V2
So what’s behind blue eyes
Could you show me a little more
Up in these four walls
I’m smarter than you give credit for
I’m still writing in the dark
Can you make your move
Yes, the mile high club does exist
But there’s never the room

PRE
CH

BR
Hollywood lies
Ain’t no big surprise
Hollywood knows
Ride it out and take it slow
Hollywood tries
Hollywood lies

Nothing Without You

Written By: Jo Ayling

V1
I thought this city would be the
Making of me, but I know
I’d be nothing without you
In contradiction, I try
To find my feet but learn to fly
I’d be nothing without you

CH
Sooner or later
Sooner or later
The path will be made clear
Sooner or later
Sooner or later
You’ll find the fire that fuels those fears

V2
Unnecessarily, I may
See black and white instead of grey
I’d be nothing without you
When the colours finally meet
You’ll see the canvas is complete
I’d be nothing without you

CH
(You’ll fight the fire that fuels those fears…)

BR
I wonder where you are
I wonder how you are
I wonder if it rains
Is it raining where you are
I’m soaking thru and thru
I’m nothing without you
I wonder if you know

Sitting Pretty

Written By: Jo Ayling

I'm Sitting Pretty
Thinking Pity
That he won't come sit with me

Put on my glossy smile
Put on my shiney eyes
Gonna pick up the phone
Call the ones who know
That i'm home alone
Singing

Time

Written By: Jo Ayling

Time

Time to rush
Time to wait
Time for choice
Time for fate
Time to sing
Time for hush
Time for filth
Time to wash the silence off

Time for sleep
Time for bed
Time for sex
Time for head
Time for action
Time for rest
Time for tears
Time to get it off your chest

Time to drink
Time to drive
Time for rehab
Time to fly
Time for peace
Time to fight
Time for day
Time to dance into the night

Time to climb
Time to fall
Time to have a fucking ball
Time for straight
Time for gay
Time for love
Time to wash those fears away
