Jo Bray
Perhaps Jo Bray is the first African singer, songwriter, producer, record entrepreneur to enter into the American Gospel Music Industry; but one thing is for sure: he is a musical genius. Born and raised in Ghana, Jo’s full name is Joseph Benjamin Bray. He was all of 7 years old when his uncle-in-law, a pianist, introduced him to the piano. Beginning with classical pieces, he learned to play church hymns and Ghanaian Traditional Choral pieces which helped him to start playing for his church and also for his high school choir. His musical abilities enabled him to become the music director for his college gospel group back in Ghana. It was during his college years at Southern Connecticut State University that Jo had the vision for Sound Word Music & Entertainment. Prior to starting the label Jo formed the Praise and Worship team for the Campus Crusade Ministry, served as the gospel choir director for ST Luke’s Episcopal Church in New Haven, and currently serves as a musician at Church On The Rock located in New Haven, Connecticut.
A classically trained musician and church “band guy” for many years, Jo draws on God and his musical background for creativity. Besides the piano, he enjoys playing the guitar which he learned to play during his college years. Jo tracked, played all piano and synthesizer in the “Nations” album. As a producer and a record executive, Jo looks forward to the challenges ahead. His goal is to produce more Christian artists, write new material and promote positive, cutting edge sounds to the ever changing music industry.
