"Goth Reviews"

John Oliver and the Distinguished IT AIN’T OVER (self-released) www.jodband.com

Goth Woman: Based in Williamsport, JOD are hot, on stage and in the studio. Everything about this recording is rock solid, from production to musicianship to song craft.

Spike: Absolutely. Oliver knows how to write hooks. He has a strong masculine voice that’s good on the ears. They’re also not stuck in one groove or dynamic. There is nothing lacking on this recording.

Goth Woman: Their songs work live and on recording. I also like the varied tempos and arrangements. Sometimes he recalls classic rock, maybe a smidge of Southern Rock. Other times he’s rooted in modern alternative power pop with an edge.

Spike: …and the title cut was the 2009 Song of the Year on the Billtown Bus Stop Radio Hour. Deservedly so. - NorthCentralPA.com

"Velco Like Hooks"

"Walk into any beer joint on a Saturday night and you're sure to find a rock ?n' roll cover band. They seem to be the mainstay of many palliative pouring places that might otherwise go out of business if it weren't for those weekend riots. What keeps us coming back is the ability to sing and dance along to familiar tunes. We like the familiar. It's comfortable. J.O.D. gave up on the cover scene and is now making a scene of its own. That the three musicians do their collaborating over the internet, rehearsing in person only before gigs - sometimes at gigs - keeps them fresh. An original band with catchy tunes and Velcro-like hooks, J.O.D. might have you scratching your head, thinking you've heard the songs before, but somehow forgot all the words. It doesn't matter. You'll be singing them the next day. This isn't a put down via conformity. It's a compliment re: accessibility" - Dale Evans (Rochester City Newspaper)

"Featured Artist"

John Oliver & The Distinguished is an all-time favorite of ours, and not just because they're great guys & truly wonderful musicians, or because their original material is infectiously catchy & cool ... but because they are also huge supporters of BilltownLIVE.com. John Oliver (guitar & vocals), Damon Shaheen (bass guitar & vocals) and Keith Bashnick (drums) have been in our corner since "day one." If you have the chance to catch JOD live, you'll be glad you did ... guaranteed. Between their musicianship and their songs, you'll walk away impressed ... and no doubt humming one of their memorable tunes! - Billtownlive.com

"Soul"

JOD has all the elements of a top-flight rock band: Great song craft, solid musicianship, excellent singing, stage persona...However, it is that elusive ingredient called SOUL that sets them apart from the merely competent. JOD rocks all the way!"--Johnny J Blair "Singer at Large" (recording artist, radio host) - Johnny J. Blair

Bio

After playing in bands for several years, I (John O. Shively), began writing music for myself in the early 2000's. After hearing some newly written songs, my long time drummer immediately jumped on board, and this formed the root of what is now J.O.D. (John Oliver and the Distinguished). J.O.D. makes adult alternative/rock songs that are catchy and easy to listen to. We keep an upbeat/energetic stage presence that creates a positive atmosphere. We also pair our stage energy with a "distinguished" look that consists of collared shirts with ties.

Passing music back and forth over the internet between members is how we practice without actually "getting together" - this also makes what happens when we play a new song on stage for the first time fun and exciting.

Members of J.O.D. are influenced by David Gray, Death Cab for Cutie, Paul Simon, Niel Young and a variety of other great musicians.

A bit about our accomplishments:
- J.O.D. headlined at the 2009 New York Restoration Project's "Little Red Lighthouse Festival" which hosted several thousand individuals - NYRP is an organization founded by Bette Midler.

- J.O.D. was selected to showcase twice at the 14th and once at the 15th Annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA. One of our tracks "Don't Come To Me" was also selected to appear on the MMC14 Compilation CD. MMC14 is billed as one of the largest music conferences on the east coast. www.musicconference.net

- J.O.D. receives "Song of the Year" 2009 for "It Ain't Over" - awarded by WVYA 89.7 FM - an affiliate of National Public Radio. www.northcentralpa.com

- J.O.D. held a spot in the NYC Grows festival held in Union Square Park NYC during the summer of 2010 - The festival played host to several thousand guests.
