"Paper Dragons Review"

--------CD REVIEW......
Chesapeake Music Guide
By Michael Macey July 2005

Paper Dragons is the debut release from Baltimore singer/songwriter Jodi Harman. Formerly with Baltimore's SuZi, she's on her own with eleven introspective and confessional songs...

(about "I Fall") It's a song that, despite its meloncholy sound, is optimistic...Its melody provides one of the many memorable hooks that pop up throughout the course of the record.

(about "Honestly") It has a lovely haunting melody that's complimented perfectly by the cello...The production has a nice, uncluttered sound that keeps instrumentation to a minimum...the minimalistic sound serves the production well, as it helps place focus on the lyrics and Harman's voice, which are both highlights of the album.

Paper Dragons is a very strong debut that will go a long way in establishing Harman's early reputation as an intelligent and appealing songwriter. She has a good grasp of what it takes to write a song that's easy on the ears and a presentation that puts the emphasis on the words and her vocal talents. In my book, that's a winning combination.

Bio

Jodi (with an i) steps into a full band role with *afterbloom; an infectious collection of new songs filled with the intense awareness that life is beautiful because of its trials. From the determination found in Let You Out Again...“I’m glad I didn’t take what I was handed, cuz I’ve been wrong before and I swore I’d never settle for less than I deserve”, to the quiet absolution of Just Let It Go... “If there was something that I knew how to do to make it easier for you to stay I would”, this ep shows her versatility as both a singer and an honest songwriter.

“I’ve always said that music is the constant truth. It’s allowed to grow, this time into a full band, but at it’s core, every song is still me, with a guitar, on my couch, writing about what we all go through.” That simplicity is translated, with the guidance of Baltimore producer, Steve Wright (Wrightway Studios) into a followup to her acoustic debut, Paper Dragons (05) that is lush and intimate.

Harman grew from a child who sang in private school competitions into a backing vocalist for a pop/rock band, before breaking out as a solo artist before forming this new band and releasing *afterbloom. You may have heard Jodi Harman's harmonies on songs
placed in television advertisement for the Warner Bros. movie, Matchstick Men, in WB's Felicity: Senior Year box set and several songs placed on MTV's Real World, Road Rules & Punk'd.

She has performed at music conferences such as the Global Entertainment & Media Summit (NY), Millenium Music Conference (PA) & Dewey Music Conference (MD)
