"TOP Ten 2004"

She can sing with a hint of angelic innocence or lay down the lyrics like the devil's sitting on her shoulder with an instrument that makes achingly beautiful sounds—just listen to the ending of “Deed I Do,” when she scats into the string of one syllable words. Jody Sandhaus is the vocalist; A Fine Spring Morning's the CD, a lady singer in front of a piano/bass/drums trio, the way Tony Bennett does it with Ralph Sharon and the guys—spare, tasteful accompaniment that swings . Ellington's “I Like The Sunrise” which rolls along in a relaxed groove, showcasing Sandhaus' voice in a straightforward mode, completely lacking in affectation—just a beautiful song, sung beautifully. “All Or Nothing At All” is probably the best known tune here, and Ms. Sandhaus delivers flawless intonation, a horn-like delivery. Peggy Lee's “There'll Be Another Spring” features a vocal brimming with emotion. A truly outstanding effort! It’s been a great year for lady vocalists, but this is the finest I’ve heard this year.
Vocal jazz doesn't get any better.

"TOP Ten for 2004"

She is simply a fine singer with good taste in material, a nice jazz sensibility and the wisdom to surround herself with excellent musicians… as supportive, swinging, and elegant as one could desire. The title track, a rather obscure, but wonderful song by Bob Haymes opens the album, and sets a high standard that is maintained throughout the disc…the truth is that there is not a weak cut among the 12 selections. This is one of those albums that will make your friends take notice, and ask, “who is that singer.” Just smile and say “Jody Sandhaus.”

"A Fine Spring Morning"

A wonderful outing by an excellent singer. - Montreal Mirror, Len Dobbin

"Michael Gladstone on A Fine Spring Morning"

In the eternal search for new and exciting jazz vocalists, Jody Sandhaus is a good name to know...a cool and detached delivery that evokes the deification of the 1950s femme jazz vocalist . Instead of the usual up tempo “happy” opening track, Sandhaus daringly opens with Bob Haymes' “A Fine Spring Morning”. The standard “Deed I Do,” on the other hand, is treated to an up tempo delivery with an assured handling and scat on the break. Duke Ellington's “I Like The Sunrise” is not one of the better known ducal classics, but it's certainly one of the most tuneful. Here, Jody Sandhaus presents it as a song of love and hope. The singer's husband, Pete Malinverni, is the sensitive pianist for this session and provides both lyrical and sure-footed playing, while veterans Todd Coolman on bass and Leroy Williams on drums keep the beat and sizzle going.

Jody Sandhaus has three albums of her own as leader-WINTER MOON, I LIKE IT HERE and A FINE SPRING MORNING.

Jody was born on April 29 in Houston, Texas. Growing up New York there was always music playing in the house. Her parents were fans of opera, show/Broadway, and classical music and so she grew up singing and playing instruments.

Jody began classical piano studies at age 6 and continued through college. She taught herself guitar in junior high school and eventually began her professional singing career at age 19 in Lake Placid, NY in the Adirondack Mountains.

After high school, she continued her college studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. There she had the opportunity to continue piano and voice studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music while attending Case.
Jody moved to the West Indies for a few years and it was while living abroad that Jody’s real introduction to the music of the great American composers came. Jody’s landlady left behind a large record collection....it was these abandoned records that became an inspiration to her and her future music. LPs featuring the music of the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Hoagy Carmichael and singers such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Maxine Sullivan, Peggy Lee, Irene Kral, Frank Sinatra were left behind along with a record player.

Upon her return to New York, Jody began in earnest to study vocal production, working intensively with noted vocal coach Marie Traficante.
Jody is a featured performer on several jazz CDs as well as on various commercial jingles. Sundays she can be heard as a soloist at the (predominately African American) DeVoe Street Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York, interpreting Spirituals and Gospel Music. She is the mother of three children, and her husband, Pete Malinverni, is a jazz pianist.

“Jody Sandhaus has a pure, sweet, full and strong voice that is well suited to interpreting standards. She always swings, her subtle improvising makes her interpretations seem personal and she knows how to tell a story.”

Jazz Improv (Dave Miele)
“With her new release A Fine Spring Morning, JS proves herself to be not only a first rate jazz singer, but an artist that is aware of who she is and where she fits within today’s jazz scene. As much a result of her artistic integrity as her vocal skills, A Fine Spring Morning is nothing short of a fine jazz release.”
