"JODY'S MAKING IT BIG IN THE SMOKE"

by Nial Anderson

It's easy to grab people's attention when you're in a loud rock band in the Forest. It's a different story though when you're embarking on a solo career in London, as former Milkwall musician Jody Thomas is finding out.

Making it on the music scene in the Smoke has come at a price - he's had to give up cigarettes.

The 27-year-old played his first gig at the White Hart in Whitechapel last week and will soon be shooting the video for his song We Are.

The former Monmouth Comp pupil was in the well-known local band Hera Crush. It made it to the finals of XFM's Rock Idol last year.

The band split when his brother and band-mate Kai got married so Jody, who now lives in High Wycombe, opted to go it alone.

He said: "The gig at the White Hart went well, although it's a bit nerve racking when you're doing solo shows in London.

"When you're in a loud band it's easy to get people's attention but when it's just you sitting on a barstool with a guitar there is more emphasis on how you interact with the audience between songs.

"We've got plenty of gigs lined up so I can get used to it and I don't believe in over-exposure."

He added: "It's nice to play in dedicated music venues because you never know who is going to be watching you."

Jody had to put off his first gig for six months due to problems with his voice which have been conquered by drinking 10 pints of water a day and giving up cigarettes.

He hopes to do a Forest comeback gig, possibly at a Coleford Music Festival. To listen to Jody's songs, visit www.jodythomasmusic.com or www.myspace.com/jodythomasmusic.

Bio

After eighteen months performing at acoustic lounges in London and venues such as the Soho Revue bar and Cedar Room, singer-songwriter Jody Thomas releases his debut EP, the 7 track ‘We Are’.

Previously fronting the London based band Hera Crush, his first solo offering mixes his previous experience with a good measure of rich harmonies poured into a tall glass of melancholic kick-ass folk and slow shaken over some very fine melodies. Just don’t mistake him for yet another troubadour– the boy knows how to rock out with the best of them.
