"Joe Chaplain - Icarus"

CD Review: Joe Chaplain - Icarus. Reviewed by James Marshall Berry, host of "Sonoma Valley Music Scene," on KSVY-FM.

This is the second full album release from Chaplain and the album focuses on vocal harmonies and simple songs that almost seem familiar the first listen. Most of the album is acoustic instruments with an occasional electric guitar track. Chaplain said in a recent interview on KSVY 91.3 Sonoma that, “even though it’s on a CD, it’s really [conceived of as] an album as the songs all relate to each other and are in the play order for a reason.” You can hear the influences of the Beatles and Neil Young on some of the tracks, but Chaplain also has his own signature on all the music, even on the only cover song on the album, a John Coltrane number called “After the Rain.” The instrumental “Crickets by Moonlight” is a personal favorite, and the kick-off track “Around Every Corner” could easily be a hard rock classic. Chaplain, a resident of the Springs, has been playing music essentially all his life, starting in the church choir as a youth and playing in bands on a variety of instruments all the way through high school and beyond. After a short career of doing session work on films and in television, Chaplain has returned to the Valley of the Moon and his first love, songwriting. The CD is available at www.cdbaby.com and at Sonoma Valley Music.

Bio

Joe Chaplain was born in Detroit Michigan, USA. In 1972 Joe moved to San Francisco and played in many bands over the years including the original prog-rock band WINDOW. One of his most memorable gigs was with the Jerry Garcia Band in Golden Gate Park, to a crowd of 20,000 where Jerry told him "Enjoy this, man. It doesn't get better than this." Jerry was right. Joe also toured with the seminal San Francisco industrial trio Factrix, playing throughout North America to sold out clubs, including the Mudd Club, CBGB and Max's Kansas City.

Joe moved to Sonoma, California in 1992. There he returned to his acoustic singing and songwriting roots. Owing to his work as a chaplain for California law enforcement, prisons and hospice, a completely fresh stream of songs started to flow early in 2004. This resulted in the solo album "Jump Your Heart" released in May 2005.

Joe's second solo album "Icarus" was just released on October 14, 2008. A fresh fusion of acoustic and electronic palettes, it's a favorite of all his fans. The title track "Around Every Corner" is a rock classic and a staple of all his shows.

For the past ten years Joe has played in Sonoma County at Little Switzerland, the Sonoma Community Center, The Barking Dog coffee houses, The Farmers Market, Sebastiani Theater, Andrews Hall, Center of the Universe Cafe, and a host of annual benefits and gatherings at wineries and local music halls.

The Joe Chaplain Band was formed in March, 2009, and has been playing to packed houses from the very first show.
