When I graduated college with a music degree in guitar performance, I had little direction and had no idea how I would create a career with the skills I had developed. I knew I wasnt attracted to teaching for a living and I didnt fancy the idea of playing in clubs for the rest of my life.
One Sunday I happened to be playing classical guitar in church and Tommy Tedesco (probably the most recorded studio guitar player in history) happened to be at the service. Afterwards, he introduced himself and asked if I had ever thought of becoming a studio musician
Needless to say, I couldnt believe my ears.
Tommy took me under his wing and literally gave me a career.
He let me tag along on recording sessions and primed me for a future as one of LAs very few working studio guitarists. There are many incredible guitarists who will never have the break that I was blessed with. Tommy has been the number one influence in my career. He taught me much more about music than just notes.
To quote Larry Carlton Tommy is a gentleman and a genius. His favorite instrument was nylon string guitar. His performances were so expressive and perfect that they would always draw tears.
Part of the reason I decided to record this CD using only nylon string guitar, is as a tribute to the memory of one of the greatest guitarists to ever pick up the instrument, Tommy Tedesco.
At a very young age, I began playing on such blockbuster films as Rocky I, Rocky III, An Officer and A Gentleman, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones The Last Crusade, Stripes, Summersby and The Karate Kid. I have also been featured on television series as Dukes of Hazard, Fame, Knots Landing, L.A. Law, M*A*S*H and Quantum Leap. I have played for and recorded with many artists including Peabo Bryson, Olita Adams, Christopher Cross, Melissa Manchester, Michael McDonald, Bert Bacharach, Dion Warwick, Frank Sinatra, Chicago, George Benson, Kenny Rogers, Pink Floyd The Wall, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Charo, Lionel Richie Buck Page, Greg Walker and Phil Collins and the list goes on.
In addition to my extensive recording career, I am an accomplished producer, composer, arranger and songwriter. I have composed music for TV such as The Bachelor reality series, The Miss America Pageant as well as several motion picture scores.
My background as a studio guitarist has been quite a journey. Most of the time I am busy working on other artists projects which is something I love doing, but gives me little time to think about my own projects.
Ive also always loved the intimate sound of solo nylon string guitar. For quite some time, Ive had the idea to combine classical guitar technique with extended jazz changes.
Ive given much thought to creating a project that puts a different spin on the traditional.
A Christmas CD would be a means of honoring my Lord and taking music everyone is familiar with and creating something different.
