Grow up listening to the angst of The Police, the wit of XTC, the landscapes of Genesis and the hooks of guitar heroes. Then get piano lessons instead of guitar. That's the new bold style of songwriter and performer Joe Lee who's mission is to reaffirm the piano as a tool of rock expression.

Biography

Born and raised in Chertsey, Surrey, UK, Joe has been playing piano since the age of 10. Initially classically trained, Joe self taught himself the Blues and early Rock 'n Roll. It was The Blues Brothers movie that inspired him to learn how to play by ear and discover the history and journey of modern music. It was during this time that he drew affinity to the musical products of Surrey including Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Genesis and the Rolling Stones. Joe was soon found playing in local jam nights in Kingston and surrounding areas playing mostly old Blues songs and 70s rock. After graduating from University with a Business and Law degree he decided not to become a barrister and instead played solo piano across the country and with his covers band, Jukebox. He also worked as a session musician recording at Abbey Road Studios in Studio 3 where the Beatles recorded The White Album.
Joe always wrote songs, but kept them under wraps until 2010 when he moved to Holland. Whilst touring across the country playing in various venues and even to 10,000 people at a football stadium, he started playing original songs in his covers sets. The other musicians liked the songs so much they persuaded Joe to record them and now Joe and his Dutch band are setting their sights on gigging here, there and everywhere. The Police were known to gig everywhere during their early years and after playing at one of The Police's first European venues in Groningen, Holland, Joe has the same philosophy and vision to take his band far and wide throughout 2011.
"My music really is an extension of me, my feelings and emotions which I keep locked up day to day. There's nothing more cathartic than having a good purge, especially to a crowd that's up for it."
On playing to large crowds, "I much prefer playing to a stadium or a few thousand people because you have more crowd to work and conquer. I regularly play in clubs and at events to a few hundred people though and enjoy the intimate interaction. It's easier to receive phone numbers from admiring fans too! Haha"

Lyrics

Let me Burn Quietly

Written By: Joe Lee

I’ve become accustomed
To the custom of the sea
Call it intuition
But it tells me now to feed
All my guilt and pleasures
Lashed against the mast
Speck on the horizon
Where I choose to leave my past

Stretch me out to sea
So I may burn
Bury me at sea
Let me burn quietly

Of all your good intentions
I’ve required them all
Warms imagination,
The cockles and core.
Surging ever forwards
Over sunken toll roads
Destination looming
Caressed by loose shoals

Stretch me out to sea
So I may burn
Bury me at sea
Let me burn quietly

(Instrumental)

Stretch me out to sea
So I may burn
Bury me at sea
Let me bu-rn
Bu-rn quietly

All You Need

Written By: Joe Lee

All you need to make some money is a phone and a yellow pages
All you need to make some cash is a phone and a little time
All you need to make a baby is a bottle and a half of Tequila
And all I need is a kiss from my honey and the whole of the world is mine

Do you have to know where you come from
To make your mark upon this Earth
Do you have to know where you belong
To have a go and make it work?

Run to the Sun

Written By: Joe Lee

I, don’t have time for me
And nothing ever comes for free
Is, this the way the world must be
Break the chains, break away and run to the sun

Oh God will I become
(run, run, into the sun)
Will I ever be as one
(run, run, into the sun)
For all the bad deeds I have done
(run, run, into the sun)
I’ll wash my face and hands in the surface of the sun

Spend your days, staring at screens
Click, cut and copy with a dozen cups of tea
Exactly when did I forget my dreams?
Break away, break the chains and run to the sun

Oh God will I become
(run, run, into the sun)
Will I ever be as one
(run, run, into the sun)
For all the bad deeds I have done
(run, run, into the sun)
I’ll wash my face and hands in the surface of the sun
The surface of the sun
The surface of the sun
The surface of the
Sun

I’ll run too
Run!
