"All Over the Map With Local Music"

"...never ceases to amaze..." - Bakersfield Californian

"Makeshift Minstrel"

"From the Guthries to the Dylans and beyond -- music history has plenty of traveling minstrel stories that could fill a library. But rarely do you get a chance to discover an evolving local talent whose stories and skills are as captivating as Joel Jacob's...This Canadian has had an on-and-off musical affair with the streets of Bakersfield over the past four years. But his next journey just make take him to the majors...The result is "Makeshift Motive," a 12-track independent wonder of catchy compositions, ranging from soulful roots, reggae, hints of hip-hop and more."

- Matt Munoz - Bakotopia Magazine (Nov 2009)

"Soulajar, Joel Jacob Rock the House"

"phenomenal...wildy entertaining and he can be compared
to an “urban Jack Johnson. What’s even more enter-
taining is that Jacob is a One-Man-Band, playing
four instruments at any given time. He is extremely
talented and is able to play more instruments than I
have room to write...You will not be dis-
appointed!"

-Marc Perez, Amanda Galindo - Cal State Runner (Bakersfield)

"Local bands want to mellow Bakersfield scene"

"In the center of the 'scene' was a bass drum, a kick snare, a keytar and an acoustic guitar. This was the set-up of Joel Jacob. With a harmonica around his neck, Jacob grabbed his acoustic, gave a slight introduction and then proceeded to play his first song. Using all four of his limbs to project his music, he played about seven songs with his acoustic and drums before busting out the keytar and rapping over a self-created loop."

-Chris Garza - TheRip.com (Bakersfield Colllege)

"Bakersfield band Soulajar: Big 2007 CD release at the Spotlight Theatre"

"more than just an island boy with a guitar strapped to his side. He's jazzy, hip-hop, funky, funny... He sat and kicked a bass drum and snare while jamming on the guitar, singing, and stopping to blow some harmonica. That was just one song. He mixed it up here and there and I dug the past KELLY 95.3 winner's hip-hop the most. The crowd roared approval."

-N L Belardes - Paperback Writer
