"John Puts Positive Spin On Shine"

By Suzanne Bhagan

On the cover of Shine, Joel John’s latest album, the songwriter, with his trusty guitar slung around him, looks up into the unknown. Inside, the insert is bordered with pictures of the Cott-nominated songwriter’s life and musical journey since his 2002 debut album, Keep the Faith.

It also includes full song lyrics for the 12 original tracks—perfect for those fans who like to sing along.

Shine opens with Always, a smooth introduction to John’s adult contemporary style. Award-winning The Angel’s Song follows, offering a positive message characteristic of the Gasparillo artiste’s songs. Shine also features unplugged versions of Golden Child and Keep the Faith, both featured on his debut album.

This album also includes last year’s Cott-nominated Pop/Rock Song of the Year Beautiful World.

The lyrics on this album seem to reach out to broken people, reassuring them that all is not lost if they learn to rely on higher powers. For instance, Golden Child urges the listener, “Say a prayer for the dreamer whose dream just fell apart.”

With titles like Through The Storm and The Other Side, John’s music speaks of overcoming obstacles.

His latest CD also features Broken world, the theme song for the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) Assembly in Ghana, Accra, in 2004. Sung in six different languages there, this anthem featured the Maisha Zurie choir on background vocals, giving the tune a feel similar to Michael Jackson’s epic Heal the world.

Although the album finishes abruptly with wild card Christmas time, overall, John’s music carries not just melody but a message—a subtly positive one. You cannot argue with his sound lyrics.

Shine is a great album to listen to when you want to unwind.

It’s perfect for destressing in situations like traffic jams. John’s voice is like a lullaby in a storm. Listeners can look forward to his upcoming gospel and adult contemporary albums, soon to be released.
