"Reap what you sow"

“His debut solo record, La Récolte, has been a long time coming (another was recorded, but Lavoie views this as his true coming-out). The album reflects 10 years of songwriting and showcases Lavoie’s proficiency in roots and folk while hinting at a wider range, occasionally illuminated by a chorus of voices or fuller instrumentation. These are straightforward and tastefully textural joyful tunes, celebrating small and large pleasures recalling early Daniel Lanois without the angst. Sure, there are moments of heartache--including a tribute to fallen songwriter/influence Elliott Smith but La Récolte reflects a pervasive sense of optimism and security.” - Mary Christa O’Keefe for Vue Weekly, Edmonton, AB

Bio

Joel Lavoie is a versatile guitarist, composer, songwriter, and studio technician. He has been actively educating himself and working as a musician since the mid-nineties. Proficient in a number of styles, Joël has contributed his savoir faire to Blues, Rock, Country, Folk, Experimental Jazz and Contemporary Works.

Born in Peace River, Alberta, Joel was raised on a farm near the village of St. Isidore. At the age of twelve he was seduced by the guitar and began studying blues, rock, and finger style techniques. He began his performing career in 1995 with the blues-rock band Cosmik Debris and his songwriting career in 1996 with Lé Twés. In their heyday, Lé Twés captured the imagination of the Franco-Albertan community. The group was a smash hit at the Loin des yeux, près du cœur event in Montréal (1998). Lé Twés recorded their only album ‘Les pieds dans bouette’ in 1999. Joël gained recording experience alongside producer Andy Hagen and released the project album ‘et un jour…’ later that same year.

In 2002, Joel graduated from Grant MacEwan College with a major in Performance and later returned to complete a major in Composition. In 2003, Joel captured first place at the Gala albertain de la chanson, a provincial showcase for up-and-coming singer-songwriters. His song ‘Bonne nuit Pierrot’ won him a recording session with Radio-Canada.
