"Straight Ahead Rock & Roll"

Straight ahead Rock & Roll is the specialty of this crew, sometimes brandishing Alternative leanings, other times having a harder crunch. Young's smoky baritone gives a distinctive flavor to the band's swaggering Blues Rock anthems, while lead guitarist (and brother) Josh decorates the three chord marvels with timeless licks.

Bio

Despite growing up in the small, rural town of Winchester, Ohio where musical opportunities were as scarce as people, brothers Joel and Josh Young became involved with music at an early age. They started their musical journey together in the locally popularized band Guardrail (alternative rock). It was here that 14-year old Joel began building the foundation of his songwriting career. The combination of the band’s original material and involvement in leading worship at local church events helped these two musicians to grow together as collaborators as well as leaders.

After Guardrail, the Young brothers parted ways to explore other musical opportunities. Then, following five years exploring, experiencing, and learning the ways of the stage through many different musical styles, Joel made the decision to become a solo artist at age 19. It only took a year of writing and recording for Joel decide that it was time to add a more electrified approach to his already catchy acoustic songs. It was then that Joel turned to his brother Josh Young and drummer Ryan Henson to gain this sound. Josh and Ryan already had a two year history playing together in the rock/alternative band Sayings of the Wise.

The trio clicked immediately. All three being seasoned musicians, the music and, just as important, the people playing it were the perfect fit. So to complete what would soon be known as the Juice, Joel recruited the talent of well-rounded musician Matt Sprague to play bass. With this lineup, the band agrees that that they have arrived at a sound that is truly unique and undeniably their own.

Their original brand of rock is weaved with catchy hooks and contagious melodies that will leave your toe tapping. “The music brings people together and allows them to have a good time – no matter where they’re from or what kind of music they like,” says Matt, and fans seem to agree. Joel’s lyrics make it easy for almost anyone to draw meaning from them. “I want everyone who hears my songs to be able to relate to them,” says Joel, “it just makes the whole experience of listening more appealing.” Combine this with the band’s unique sense of humor and light-hearted stage presence and you’ll find that these guys are as easy to relate to as their music.

With the simple goal of being able to share their God-given talents as musicians with as many people as possible, the motives of Joel Young & the Juice are simple. “I think that once people see what we’re all about and hear our music for themselves, they’ll get as excited about it as we are, and that’s what we really want – to get people excited,” says Josh. It is this kind of youthful energy, as well as their exciting live show, that will easily affect their listeners and get their juices flowing.

After several months of touring Joel Young & the Juice have not only played all over the greater Cincinnati area in venues like The Cavern, Blue Note, Never on Sunday, York Street Café, Radiodown, Mad Frog, Top Cat’s, Pulse, Barrelhouse, and the famed Madison Theatre, but they were also invited to be part of the 2004 Midpoint Music Festival which draws nation-wide attention from the music industry. Through all this, Joel and the boys have quickly broadened their fan-based and become a regular favorite on the Cincinnati circuit. Drummer Ryan Henson remarked that, “It seems that no matter what age people are or what musical preference they seem to have, before the end of our set they are all rocking along with us and loving it as much as we are.” It is this kind of reaction that will quickly make Joel Young & the Juice one of the greatest live acts to ever take the stage.
