BandHip Hop

When it's all said and done, I want to be remembered as one of the greatest lyricists. I'm hip hop, but my content is narrative, and my beat choices will reflect the topic, rather than dictating it. I will bridge the gap.

Biography

I love music that comes from the soul. I hope I can portray that through my own sound. I love lyrics, I am very much into poetry and have competed in slam poetry competitions for the experience in delivery and to sharpen my skills against other seasoned competitors.

I am heavily influenced by American hip hop, but my sound includes elements of down tempo and trip hop. I draw my stories from things like my father's imprisonment during the Vietnam War and his subsequent escape, or from classical works of crime fiction. I am a storyteller who loves a good twist.

Everybody's Got A Story To Tell

Written By: Joey Maker

[Verse 1:]

Have you ever felt the vibe you get
I can't describe it, kinda feeling more alive I guess?
When you stop trying to find the sense
Let go stress, and mesh with your environment?
Life presents a lot of chances
And I got a lot of questions but ain't getting any answers
So see to me the key is glances
Cause if you look ‘em in the eyes you can read what they plans is
And it was happenstance I stumbled on this dude
I passed him as he mumbled, it was late afternoon
I heard: "I don't mean to sound rude to you,
But my request is a little unusual.
I'm a mess, just looking for some food to chew
I'd regret asking for cash like they usually do
See I can't trust myself if there's money in the plans
If you get me something little you'd forever have my thanks!"
"Damn!", I was thinking, "how you gonna make demands?"
But then I seen the scars on his arms, and his hands
It took me by surprise, I was trying to find out why
I pieced it in my mind, as I seen it in his eyes
Beneath that cold shell, this guy been through hell
And buying a cup of coffee might lighten my curiousity
I might as well, I got time to kill
And hell, everybody got a story to tell!

[Chorus:]

Now everybody got a story to tell
You try ignore it, but it calls you, every gory detail
You see their faces as they passin’ you by
I guess the question that they askin’ is "Why?"
We so wrapped up, we ain't know what we missin’
We keep our ears open but we ain't really listenin’
Our heads held high, we ain't hearin’ their cries
I guess the question that they askin’ is "Why?"

[Verse 2:]

We sittin’ down, found a table in the corner
We paused in our talking as the waiter took our order
The walls adorned with autographs, framed in the borders
Famous patrons pose in photos now, sayin’ they endorse it
He said: "Who woulda thought it, I been so caught in it
Too scared to approach these doors and walk in it
Pour some french water, afford some more spirits
But the money all withdrawn, support just gone with it.
See I more than done fought enough wars in my time
To know when the battle is lost, and this just ain't mine
Born the son of two addicts, abused until I'd had it
Trying to get away, confused, picked up the habit
Brother, father, mother, all trying to see that I'm buried
Survived through all the violence, now see the scars that I carry
And the state cut my funding, say I'm spending it wrong
I'm down to 50 a week, guess what I'm spending it on?
You see there's so much pain, I turned to cocaine
And my frame became strained, maimed from the blame
The hate so great I changed my own name,
But what's written on the page don't change what's in your veins...
And if the blood tie greater than what's written on the paper
Then I'ma sever the lines, guess it's time to meet my maker, ain't it?
It's human nature, try escape a situation
I've exhausted all my options and it's only escalatin’
So whether in the streets or in my sleep
I know I'm going soon, but I’m going in peace, you see?
Now I've done shared my tale, and the burden as well
Cause hell... everybody's got a story to tell."

All I Need

Written By: Joey Maker

[Chorus]

(This is all I need)
One shot, one chance at the top
To give it all I've got
(And this is all I need)
To get me through my darkest days
I know everything'll be okay
(If I can just believe)
One shot, one chance at the top
To give it all I've got
(And that's all I need)
And that's all I need
(And this is all I need)

[Verse]

I sat back and watched tragedies happen
Panic attacks in the back of packed crack dens
When gangstas with fatal attractions, to contraptions
Gats and Mac-10s, is forced to take action
They big on ego but lacking in compassion
For me, moving ki's was a dream that never happened
Nothing but a couple of minor traffic infractions on my record
Passed crime by, went straight to rappin'
Never looked behind me
Tried to keep it grimey
Pushing myself to the limit every day that I'm alive
Listenin' to these so-called visionaries that I'm visitin'
Finding the irony to much to let it slide
Situation is contradictions, one after another
Perpetuating the wrong images, we killing each other
Getting outta hot water little harder than I thought it be
Thermometer still warm but my troubles ain't thwarting me
Cause what I oughta be, is the sorta MC
The more you hear of me audibly, the more I can be
And now I show em how the flow go -
It ain't the guns or the funds, it's the spirit, and the lyrics make em loco
And when I blow, be back to say "I told you so"
Sky's the limit, and I did it, so you have to know
It's not about the fame to me, you see?
I'm an MC, and honestly, this is all I need!

[Chorus]

[Bridge x2]

All I need is the state of mind
All I need is a place and time
All I need is to lose the fear inside me
Come out and let the whole world hear...

[Chorus]
