Kicking off as a bonfire soundtrack but finishing with fireworks (in every aspect, that is), that’s definitely not something you come across every day, especially if the track still makes beautiful sense. Go On (Let It Go) from new kid on the block Johanan does however exactly that, and of course, he is from Stockholm. Before you realise it, you’ll have a singsong with the parapapapa-ah-eeh-ooh-let-it-go bit and be immersed in a building drum pattern that sounds quite a bit like the stuff from fellow Swedes Niki & the Dove – Johanan does however mix that with a bit of jazz-impro later on without losing that real, energetic spark the song undoubtly has. - Disco Naivete

"Johanan – “Holy Spirit” (Stereogum Premiere)"

Johanan is a Swedish producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who burst onto the scene with one of those majestic and anthemic songs that demands your attention. His debut single “Go On (Let It Go)” popped up on Beats 1, where Zane Lowe of course called it “magic” because he’s Zane Lowe. Still, this time perhaps his enthusiasm isn’t misplaced. That song begins by grappling with the sticky way we hold onto pain, then builds to a towering chorus that glories in the smooth, vulnerable freedom of giving up and letting go.
The follow-up is much more subdued, but equally concerned with spiritual transformation. It’s titled “Holy Spirit,” and anyone immersed in charismatic Christian dogmas will hear echoes of that in the lyrics; the song even begins with some Gregorian sounding chants. “Holy Spirit” is a song concerned with embracing brokenness and pushing past darkness into some sort of hopeful space. Both tracks immediately evokes British contemporary Jono McLeery who is fusing jazz, electronic production and featherweight vocals in a similarly shimmering way. Listen below and expect to hear more from yet another emerging Stockholm talent. - Stereogum

"Johanan - All At Once"

Last August we were introduced to Johanan. The Jonsi stylings of his debut single, “Go On (Let It Go),” was music to our ears. Same goes for this latest tune “All At Once,” but this time the Swedish artist gets to show off his versatility. The track, which got a premiere on Zane Lowe yesterday, is quite the about face from this last one, combining explosive horns, breezy keys and Johanan’s smooth vocals to create the most infectious piece of experimental pop we’ve heard in a while. Listen below. - All Things Go Music

Still working on that hot first release.
