Throughout her teenage years, Jo was involved with choral groups, choirs and other musical bands.
At 18 she discovered jazz, and after studying at the Christchurch Polytechnic School of Jazz graduated with an A Grade Diploma in Jazz Performance. That same year she was presented with the Jazz Soloist of the South Island Award. As a Backing vocalist she has worked with Tina Arena, Margaret Urlich, Mark Williams, Rick Price, Glenn Shorrock (LRB), Amanda Easton, Ursula Yovich and MTV's Kyle Linahan.

Since moving to Sydney in 1998 Jo has built a highly credible name for herself in the Australian music industry, which has spawned an impressive list of Band credits and clients.

Tell Me When

Written By: Jo Elms

When will you tell me, when?
All the things I thought, you’d say in time
Will you speak of the way you feel?
Tell I am yours and you are mine

Love is pure and souls are free
I can’t make you burn for me
We could give this love a chance
All good things take time
When will you tell me, When?

Broken hearts do mend
For every tear you’ve cried, I’ll make you smile
What can I do to make the memory fade?
Lift the clouds and bring the sun to shine

Love is pure and souls are free
I can’t make you burn for me
You could give us a chance
True love takes a while
When will you tell me, When?

To love someone’s to know its right
If you walk away then I won’t fight
Oh I’ve, seen enough to know
I don’t want to let you go
When will you tell me, when?

Look and see, my heart is free
I want you to burn for me
We could start this dream tonight
Write our names across the sky
When will you tell me, When?

Black and White Love

Written By: Johanna Elms, Jim Shipstone and Sven Tydeman

Black and White Love

VERSE ONE
One minute we’re laying in bed, bodies unexplored like books unread
Looking’ deep in each others eyes, reading love between the lines
One minute, I’m holding your hand, talking ‘bout the future and making plans
The next thing, we’re in a fight, and all I see is red and words are Kryptonite

I’ve packed my bags more than once or twice
I can’t help feeling that this love has died
I’m tangled in your web of lies
Can’t find my way out of this

CHORUS
Black and white love
No more colour in this
Black and white love
Black and white love
No more colour in this
Black and white love

VERSE TWO
I’m chained to you and I’m colour-blind
When I try to leave you always change my mind
Minutes turn to hours and hours to days
A thousand conversations wont change your ways

I’ve packed my bags more than once or twice
I can’t help feeling that this love has died
I’m tangled in your web of lies
Can’t find my way out of this

HERE I AM

Written By: Elms/Maklad/Jarry©2009

VERSE 1:
It’s been a while since I got on this train
Some things never seem to change
These tracks I’m taking on this journey of mine
Travelling through the night til the mornin sunrise

Ticket to take me where I belong
Midnight express, I’m comin home

CHORUS:
Here I am
And all I have is right here in my hands
And I, I see things so clear
For the first time in years

VERSE 2:
All the people that time has changed
The stories told, by the lines on their face
And on the streets they remember my name
And through their eyes, I’m a child again

Ticket to took me to a place I belong
Midnight express, I am home

CHORUS:
Here I am
And all I have is right here in my hands
And I, I see things so clear
For the first time in years

BRIDGE:
All the things in life that I’ve taken for granted
Have always been here right in front of my eyes

CHORUS:
Here I am
And all I have is right here in my hands
And I, I see things so clear
For the first time in years

Words

‘Words’
Written by Sam McNally and Johanna Elms 2009

Verse one:
Oh, first embrace
Summer nights in Paris, dancing till the night was day
Oh, serenade
Your voice was sweet seduction, chasing all my cares away

Chorus:
Words that whispered softly to me
Words that spoke of love
Words that made me kiss your lips
Made me feel your touch
A master of the words you chose to make me fall in love
I’m no longer yours and I don’t hear those words

Verse two:
Oh, designer smile
Dior beaming from your lips
I surrendered to your style
Oh, you wore my heart

Rept Chorus

Bridge:
I was naïve-the truth tastes so bittersweet
I can’t believe the words you said meant nothing
Oh no no no no

Verse three:
Oh, we say goodbye
We’ll always have place, this time
In Paris you and I

Rept Chorus x 2

Add lib & fade til end

Set List

This depends on the type and length of the event/performance as my performance style and capabilities are very flexible.
For example; for an original music performance or festival, the promoter/organizer will need to let me know how long I am required to play for. I can perform 2 full sets or original material lasting 45 minutes each or I can do one 6 song original set, or I can do a whole nights worth or material spanning 3 X 40 minutes sets that can be a mixture of originals and covers, or a whole night of covers... it's really up to the clients specifications.
My covers repertoire includes songs from artists such as The Beatles, Cheryl Crow, Fleetwood Mac, Burt Bacharach, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Sáde, U2, Sting, Eva Cassidy & much much more.
