"John Black, Acoustic Guitar Solos"

“John Black will sooth you after a tiring week at the job as effectively as he might inspire you to start the next” Tim Alexander PULSE of the Twin Cities - PULSE of the Twin Cities

"Dr. Christmas' annual CD review"

The words “acoustic” and “simple” often go together in music, and at Christmas time it is acoustic music I turn to most often. It’s hard to top the simple beauty of an unaccompanied acoustic guitar, and this year’s prime example, “O Tannenbaum”, was recorded by Minnesotan John Black not far west of La Crosse. - By Gerry Grzyb • For The Post-Crescent • December 15, 2009

Bio

Now a resident of Santa Fe I am currently working on several new songs and instrumentals. Last year I added harmonica to my live and recorded act by using a rack. And it's not just for blues. I have found that several originals and covers sound great this way. I also play mandolin and bass.

Growing up in Philadelphia I was of course interested in rock and r&b. But in my late teens I became very interested in folk and traditional music as well as jazz. There was a thriving scene on the U of Pennsylvania campus including the Cherry Tree Folk Club and the Fox Hole Jazz Club. After learning with friends and private instructors for a few years I enrolled in the music program at Naropa University in Boulder Co. It was a very diverse and international program including studying with guitar great Ralph Towner.

I then spent the next ten years playing bass in afro-carribean and funk rock bands mostly in the S.F. Bay area as well as national tours. During that time I kept up with singer/songwriter and acoustic guitar instrumental work as well. After moving to Minneapolis in the '90's I went solo producing one singer/songwriter album and two instrumental albums and toured the Midwest and the east coast.

I moved to Lanesboro in 2000 and became involved with the Commonweal Theatre, The Lanesboro Art Council and performing regionally for the most part. Currently I am recording new material, exploring a relationship with New Folk Records and touring more extensively.
