Lyrics

driftwood

Written By: john bourne harbour

i watch as you walk along the shoreline
an ocean child who’s been away too long
who’s been away too long
your hair, golden highlights sparkling brightly
your face, miles from nowhere
caught within the timeless song
and i wonder silently watching you
will the waves, will they carry you away now

your feet, they move slowly through the water
wading for memories
will they nibble at your toes my love
gently, if they return, the spirits of the sea?
or will they pull you down with the undertow
leaving me as i am, again alone
as driftwood
just to watch as you walk along the shoreline
an ocean child who’s been away too long

i hear, you almost whisper, to yourself,
“the good shells are out just a little further”
but the waves, they come crashing in, like life comes
they break and crash upon the sand
keeping you at a distance
keeping you farther then i can reach
i stand motionless
like driftwood
cast upon the beach

and i watch as you walk along the shoreline
an ocean child who’s been away too long
bleached dry, by the summer sun, and your love
an ocean child who’s been away too long
an ocean child who’s been away too long
an ocean child who’s been away too long—
