John Flanagan and the Begin Agains

BandFolkCountry

Expressive bluegrass/folk with moving melodies, warm vocal harmonies and timeless storytelling. John Flanagan's debut solo album 'Meet Me In Between' has been praised for its rich honesty and its heartbreakingly beautiful songs.

Biography

John Flanagan grew up listening to the likes of James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel and Joan Baez and has blended this acoustic, story telling tradition into his simple and expressive style of bluegrass/folk. He has been performing around Melbourne since 2004 as a singer and songwriter for 5 piece Melbourne band Glory Tuesday, who combine soulful melodies with a grooving rhythm section to create their unique style of folk-infused funk.

Traveling around Australia with his guitar and banjo at the start of 2008, John’s music has been inspired by the many faces and landscapes of this country. He has since joined forces with seasoned musicians Andy Zito, Mark Zito and Jane Patterson to perform the songs from his debut solo album 'Meet Me In Between'. Their warm 3-part vocal harmonies and delicate acoustic textures are now a part of Melbourne's thriving folk scene where they perform under the name 'John Flanagan and the Begin Agains'

Lyrics

Pray For Rain

Written By: John Flanagan

When my old man died, he left me the farm
I was his only, I was his right arm.
So when he took my hand from his cold deathbed,
Well how could I refuse to carry on in his stead.

He said "Pray for rain my son, and one day it will come.
Don't let anyone take your faith away.
You must stay strong my son, when our Lord's Will be done.
Goodbye my little one, I'll treasure every day we had."

Time kept moving on, the farm breathed with new life,
With new tears and laughter, my little boy and my wife.
And we’d heard some talk around, that some folks had shot through.
It was never easy, but it was the only life I knew

I said "Pray for rain my son, and one day it will come.
Don't let anyone take your faith away.
You must stay strong my son, when our Lord's will be done.
You'll see my little one, you'll treasure every drop of rain."

He'd never seen the rain fall so hard,
Through his hands, my little boy
Had never seen the rain,
it’s up to his knees, it’s over his head
He'd never seen the rain, before that day…

"Pray for rain my son, and one day it will come.
Don't let anyone take your faith away.
You must stay strong my son, when our Lord's will be done.
Goodbye my little one, I'll treasure every day we had."

Meet Me In Between

Written By: John Flanagan

I have tried to make you my lover
And I have tried to make you my friend
But when I held out my hand
I got your cold shoulder
And it's gonna take me some time now, to mend

I was holding on too tight to notice
That what I held onto, was never mine
I was wrong in every way
Though never wrong to love you
Now I have no choice but to leave you behind

I will not come crawling
If you want me,
Meet me in between

I will not come crawling
I chased you down this one way street
You would not meet me in between

Now I'm trying so hard to forget you
But I can not deny what i felt
Well you knocked me off my feet
And I wanted you so badly
But you walked away,
When before you I knelt

I will not come crawling
If you want me,
Meet me in between

I will not come crawling
I chased you down this one way street
You would not meet me in between

Well I'm sure that you'll find you somebody
Who will crawl along by your side
And you'll take nothing less
But I won't be that person
But you know at least I can say that I tried

I will not come crawling
If you want me,
Meet me in between
I will not come crawling
I chased you down this one way street
You would not meet me in between
