Biography

A group of friends playing great songs:

John Gration has a story to tell and you can hear it in his music. With musical tastes from Robert Johnson to Elgar and everything in between he writes in a diversity of styles but all the songs have John’s signature and when he plays guitar and sings, naturally it sounds just like…John Gration.

Alex Coke, from Texas, plays multiple saxes and flutes and plays them beautifully too. He played for many years in the famous Willem Breuker Collectief and is a .well known session player and composer too. He replaces trombonist Michael Rorby who has moved to New York.

Huub Habets adds some accompaniment on the keyboards but excels on trumpet. No standard Miles licks in Huub's solos, which explains why he has toured with various bands around Europe, North and South America.

Arjan Schinkel has been with John since the start of the band and so knows instinctively what John has in mind. As half of the rhythm section Arjan plays melodic bass lines on one his lovely self-built Schinkel 5-string electric bass or his new love, a full size upright bass.

Drummer Ton Vrolijk is the other half of the rhythm section and was in at the start as well. He likes to find the groove in a number but loves to get out of his comfort zone too.

Lyrics

Friendship

Written By: John Gration

(A) true friend always
And a brother born for when things change
Holds you up, when you fall
True friend, just call

Time to leave, going away, what d’you say?
Say goodbye
Don’t want (you) to go, or show my tears, do you hear?
Take good care

We’ll meet again
See each other oh-oh more and more
And when we’re far
We’ll be closer than we were before

(A) true friend always
And a brother born for when things change
Holds you up, when you fall
True friend, just call

Face to Face

Written By: John Gration

I’m a noisy boy
Making trouble every time I speak my mind
People doing the right thing
Are so hard to find
Stand up men, show yourselves
Look after the girls in your town

So tell me what went wrong
We’ve forgotten who our neighbours are in our haste to get along
Don’t feel safe, afraid to hope
That right can win from wrong
Looking away, nothing to say
Walking by on the other side of the road

Well it’s really so strange not to feel safe in this age
No friends or neighbours who care
To me it seems easy just be sure to be busy
Helping each other to share all the earth

I’m a noisy boy…

Well it’s really so strange…
… to share all the earth
Who o oh Who o oh

I’m a lonely boy
Lonely boy, lonely girl, it seems the times have changed
The time to cry has passed
The time to laugh has come again
Come on men, Face to Face
Representing the human race

A Letter You Wrote

Written By: John Gration

You wrote me a letter and what did it say-ay
Didn’t read it till another day-ay-ay-ay

You were saying you needed me bad yeah
But didn’t spell it out so I could understand

And when I read it after years gone by-y
Looking back I must have closed my eye-y-y-eyes

For years and years I lost your trail
If I find it, it might be to no avail

I don’t need your love to hide away
I need your help to find the way

You don’t have to read between the lines
It’s plain to see all the time

Sorry now it took so long
To call you back where you belong

You wrote me a letter and what did it say-ay
Come back baby, happy times again

Talk to Me

Talk to Me

Well did you fly away again?
Leaving me wondering where you’ve been
I knew you’d do nothing wrong
I known it all along
But I’ve got to hear you say it too
I’ve missed you so long

Falling, falling
Oh, yeah
Is there any way around?
I just want to listen to your sound
Wasn’t it a fair exchange?

Your smiling eyes
Talk to me, Talk to me

Have you taken all I have to give?
Left me with just a broken heart to live?
(Is it) easy to say ‘So long’?
‘Just write yourself another song’
Still I try to understand
Have you been hurting too so strong?

Calling, calling
Your name
Did you hear a word I say?
Every day (seems) just another way (to hear)
Goodbye

(But) Your smiling eyes, (They) Talked to me, talked to me
Your smiling eyes, Talk to me, talk to me

Who Knows

Who Knows

One has gone and changed her mind and left me full of tears
Another has her charms singing in my ears
Who knows who, who knows how?
One doesn’t dare and the other doesn’t care

How about a tune tryin’ to sooth my mood
How about a word trying to reach my heart
Maybe to soon, to make a start
Maybe too late, to tear it all apart

Do what you do; try what you try
Just a mystery; keeps us wondering why
Hard to say, which way
Things will flow, don’t you know

We go you know and play around
Wasting time, losing ground
Open up; look around
Sing our song; sing our song with our sound

Fleurs d'Olargues

Fleurs d'Olargues

A waterfall
The sound is in my ears
The sphere is in my mind
A kind of summer dream
Lying (down), breathing, feeling fine
Watching while the swallows fly

A glass of wine
Savour it with friends
The sun has settled down
The moon and stars intense
Looking out across the stream
Is it real or just a dream?

Beautiful flower
Your seed was planted far away
But now you're here to stay
A breeze and your scent just passes by

Living on memories
It' s a way to pass the time
That way I feel your mine
But still I'll come back another day

A waterfall
The sound is in my ears
The sphere is in my mind
A kind of summer dream
Lying (down), breathing, feeling fine
Watching while the swallows fly

Beautiful flower
Your seed was planted far away
But now you're here to stay
A breeze and your scent just passes by

Living on memories
It's a way to pass the time
That way I feel yoor mine
But still I'll come back another day

Viens ici, Sois ici, Restes ici

Each an Every Day

Written By: John Gration

Each and Every Day
Words and Music by John Gration

Intro

A thousand years with you, like yesterday gone by
Join together all our love, until we die
One more strand than two
Will keep me close to you

Who will be a guest and reside upon the hill
Speaking truth, not moved or changed my friend
Obedience to the Lord
Is all he intends

Like quiet waters and green fields
Enjoying life, loving many days
Time with you will be a shield
To live and die for you, in my heart, I say

Solo + chord riff

Like a lily in the field, a bird that’s flying high
Let’s not heed the worries of the day
You’re worth so much more
In each and every way

The work of your fingers, the moon and the stars
Birds of heaven and fish in the sea
Laughing children and nature it seems
All of them made just for you and me

Slot riff
