"Shawn Henderson"

"I’ve watched and listened as John Malloy has grown as an artist. He continues to grow and impress me. What first captured me about his artistry was his grasp of the written word. He writes from a profoundly vulnerable place and delicately brings each of his songs to life. His vocal approach is equally impressive. He sings with confidence but with a sensitivity that will, at times, melt your heart."

- Host of "Stay Tuned" on WSCA, Portsmouth Community Radio

Bio

Singer/songwriter John Malloy is from South Berwick, Maine. That’s the first thing he wants you to know. He’s very proud of his hometown and the people that live there.

At 32, John has spent the majority of the last 15 years focused on his songcraft and has recently become dedicated to carrying the stories that live inside of his songs around from town to town, from stage to stage. John says that “most of my songs kind of seem like they're about that feeling you get when you're driving around aimlessly in the middle of the night, listening to music and trying to figure out where you’re going to end up next.” The characters in his songs seem to be doing just that, moving through the world the best way that they can and looking for a sturdy place to land. The songs are filled with personal, heartbreaking and ambiguously reflective lyrics. It is important to note that the songs never seem self-indulgent or wallowing in confessional down-heartedness.

His self-produced, 2006 album, "As Long as it Lasts Us" has received airplay on Portland, Maine's alternative radio station WCLZ as well as on Shawn Henderson's popular radio show "Stay Tuned" on Portsmouth, New Hampshire's Community radio station WSCA.

His 2004 album, "Bridge Weight", was produced by avant-jazz/free form guitarist David Lajoie. His guitar parts are soaked into the songs, creating an atmosphere that is both warm and edgy. John’s enthusiasm for working with such an original creative force as David Lajoie emphasizes his wide range of influences. He notes singer/songwriters such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Ellis Paul, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits, Denison Witmer, Sufjan Stevens, Jon Foreman, David Wilcox, John Gorka and Patty Griffin as having a huge impact on his own writing. He is also enormously influenced by a wide range of artists such as The Beatles, REM, Wilco, Radiohead, Counting Crows, Ida, The Velvet Underground, Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Richard Buckner, Elliott Smith and countless others.

John is currently working on a new collection of songs entitled "Words When You Were Young" and hopes to have it completed by the spring of 2010.
